Nice idea! For planes like the F22 (which I have build and destroyed 4 ), this would be great to pre-do 2 dollar tree panels first, lightly sand, no paint, build F-22 using those 2 dried panels., then re-coat and do final coats and painting.

Question for Peter. Why do you not recommend this procedure for the wings? BTW Awesome Idea! !!!! Thanks
@Eugensdiet
@Eugensdiet 10 жыл бұрын
I wasn't aware of the availability of craft paper. I knew the British have been covering planes with brown paper for decades but the stuff Peter uses seems really light. What are your thoughts of using it over Depron? Just thought of something. I'm drawing up a cartoon C-17 & Cessna Citation/Lear and now I'm thinking I might be able to apply the brown paper to the one side of the Depron while it is still flat and then roll the foam'paper into it's elliptical shape using the paper to force the foam into compression as opposed to it stretching. Do you think the paper would prevent it from rolling. The minimum radius would be somewhere around 1.5 inches/ 40 mm. Nice video. I have another fuselage which is a combination of light white foam block and Depron and I'm anxious to try this procedure on that. It should also work nicely on wire cut blue foam. It is 0552 in the morning so I guess there isn't any reason to go to bed. I think I'll get dressed and go to Walmart.

I haven't left for Walmart yet so I watched the video again and you recommended not to cover wings with the craft paper and so I'm wondering why? Again the video was very helpful for my new designs. Thanks

Just rewatched this. You can also use thinned white glue, 2:1 glue to water. May be cheaper. After watching this, I would have used this method to cover my EPO foam turtle deck for the FT Racer, see my article on FT.

***** Here in Australia you can get foam board but it is as expensive as Depron and Depron is a superior product for modelling. So yes, please do a Depron build guide. Also Depron versions of the plans would be good. I have built the FT Spitfire and the FT Baby Blender but they weren't easy because I had to modify the plans as I went.

Great idea +jakeEboy Building with depron videa would be awesome, in UK is cheaper than foam-board and "better" because the foamboard i can find is kinda cardboard backed rather than paper backed and destroys razor blades when cutting it :-(

One thing to note when building FT planes using Depron - I have found that the CG moves back a little bit so you might want to move some electronics like servos forward an inch or so.

Obviously this is a good tip for the kits as they use paper covered foamboard. but if you use something like Depron, and make sure to fully glue every joint, there's no need to water proof it.

@chrispychickin
@chrispychickin 10 жыл бұрын
Its definitely possible. If you're going to use water based acrylic with glass, make sure you're using very light glass cloth or it'll weigh a lot more than the light paper used here. Another option is to use epoxy resin, and apply heat to it while applying. You can then squeegee out the excess with a credit card or similar until there's just enough left to hold it on securely. You could maybe apply glass with whatever resin, and no talc, then after that's cured, apply resin+talc powder over the top as a filler/sanding sealer to fill the small gaps in the cloth's weave that it leaves behind. hope this helps you with your idea!

Just did some testing using this method on the DTFB and the water based coating. It works BUT does not solve the number one issue with this foam board, adhesion. The original paper and this new technique still does NOT adhere to the foam. This is the biggest downfall of this foam. After a crash or hard landing, the foam separates from the paper and this causes structural weaknesses. I have found the only glue that really Sticks to this foam is foam safe instant glue, and to re-glue a whole sheet is not practical from a cost point of view.

A much easier way... is using pour on epoxy, that is used for glossing tables. Brush on thin layer. Get the slow dry kind. Its called... pour on.. and it is literally.... the absolute best thing ever. I built a foamy in 2006... that is still in same condition now as it was then. Put it on AFTER paint. You can paint it after coating it if you want it matte... but you would need to scuff it with sandpaper.

I do not see enough advantage in removing the paper just to put on a little better paper. My opinion is to leave the existing paper, use the oil based poly procedure on the entire airplane, then paint. The baby powder can still be used with oil based to get a smoother painting surface.
