good old design, only things I'd rather see a little different is getting the elevator "off the floor", and perhaps some vertical runners (ski's) up front to keep a prop from being easily snapped, just vertical foam board maybe 1.5" taped edge to make it slippery. BBQ skewer foam board wheel landing gear could be cool too.

idea for a build. try to make a big EDF fly! like just the edf,... attach wings and a tail to the edf. edf is the fuselage. in theory it should do like mach 3 or something.

One of the things I love about this channel is how we get to see you walk the walk over the years when it comes to bringing people into the hobby. Josh Scott used to be our newbie. Then Stephan filled the role, with a little bit of Alex coming back to planes after having almost fully transitioned to quads for a long time. Now we get to cheer on Jeremy's successes.

I learned to fly with a Tiny Trainer. Crashed it so many times since 2016 (especially in the beginning ) but the rear fuselage survives to this day. I've used this plane to teach friends to fly too. It's a great design.

In life generally its lovely to have a friend who is kindly and thinks enough of your feelings to encourage you like these guys encourage each other. I find that as amazing and beautiful as the aircraft to be honest. That was one of the first things that struck me as a great thing when I first started watching Flite test. I love these guys so much! Its not even put on or anything. I know genuine when I see it....

ALEX! Don’t do this to me Alex! Has it really been 10 years since I first found you guys? I was 11 when I was eagerly researching what to get for my first trainer plane, when on Horizon’s page an epiode of Flite Test with a particular trainer was recommended to me. Now I’m 21 with you guys being a major inspiration on not only me in this hobby but my professional career pursuit too! Man....10 years....

Don't stress about the wind, whilst it makes flying harder, when your learning and have a buddy with you, the wind is your best friend, you learn and advance as a pilot WAY faster in the wind. My local airfield is very windy and very very thermally, the bixler 1.1 can be a real handful in the wind but I think I am a far better pilot then I could have ever been learning only in calm weather. Today I landed on the runway properly for the first time (and did it 6 times over 4 flights) and have gotten past my fear/discomfort of flying over myself which was hurting my ability to shoot approaches. Last week I made my first paddock landing so very happy :) Another thing that I can see for people is how slow it seems when you first start out, hearing 8-10 weeks or longer to learn. I am on week 8, and it doesn't feel that long, it's really important you do not rush yourself, advance when you are comfortable and you'll learn faster because you're not stressing yourself out and not making ""forced"" mistakes by being stressed. One more tip while I got you reading, if you can afford it, invest in telemetry capable gear, in wind, the discharge rates changes a lot and telemetry is really helpful. My shortest flight was very windy, dirty air, 6 minutes. Average flights are 8-9 minutes. My best flight was also windy but the air was smooth and we had a great thermal that was just *parked* so managed to get an 18 minute flight. Telemetry gave me and my instructor the confidence to keep flying way past the timer because we **knew*** the state of the battery and also gave us the warning when the pack crashed out really quick due to high battery load.

Another great video. Reminds me of some of the early Flite Test content with Josh and Josh. I like that Jeremy is taking on that rookie pilot role now. I know he's a "camera guy" but I sure hope you keep putting him in from of one from time to time. I'ts very inspiring to hear his story. Also, downladed Raid: Shadow Legends and started playing. It's a little addicting. ;) One question...now how I am I supposed to get all these free plans drawn? XD

I want to get the kids into outdoor play and well this is a old hobby of mine. I have a warbird, so it's not a learners plane. Shame about the PTSD, I have two linked PTSD causes, one for a hit and run, which effected my entire life due to a disability I have from that. I got better: but suffered abuse from that which makes life hard. But if you can fail and understanding what it is, it's not so bad. Good luck with the flying and learning, it's a fun sport and learning why you crashed or where to put the blame, is key to the hobby. Lol.. I've had a fair amount of crashes, and costly ones too. So when it comes to flying a over wing is idea due to how they fly. And rudder controls over allerions .... Here is one of my mighty crashes. It was a fairly gusty day so not ideal. I was flying a 3 channel as I took off I got hit with a side gust as I needed to bank, so the plane tiles and I trotted up and gave my self left rudder .... To nose up..... Unfortunately, the plane had no vertical rudder.... So I ended up nose down at full speed ..less than two seconds later... Plane in five ish parts... But what did we learn? Plane was light, actually take note of the plane and control surfaces. Don't fly in gusts.. The cost of parts... We live we learn.... Well at least fall, I had my helecopter out and I set it... Well I hadn't fully done so and throttle off, was high enough to take off on a steady climb.. I jumped but missed it and went running down the roads and a big area flooring it but lost sight , this being that it was about 50-60 meters but this time with a slow breeze carrying it away... Never found it... Been a bit of a joke since then... Normally I'd set indoors , this time I didn't. So I bought a quad drone.. treed that and it exploded... New one has been fine. Sat in the corner is my warbird waiting to come out to play. And I need a kit for that... Should be fun again..

I have an idea for a new project! Update the tiny trainer build so that it's a pusher. Trainer characteristics are great, but everyone crashes nose first, which destroys your motor and prop. I loved learning on the Bixler because crashes were way less devastating. I think it would be challenging to design a good pusher trainer with great flight characteristics that would be cheap and easy to build, but huuuuge payoff if you manage to pull it off! Been a fan of flitetest since Josh and Josh reviewed a PNP Wildcat back in the day :) keep up the good work!

I didn't find flight test untill after my dad had past away very suddenly and unexpectedly. I had grown up watching with administration my whole life as my dad a career RAAF Sargent had expressed his passion for planes building amazing an complete planes from scratch as he always said he had to learn the art and mastery of fine wood work to be able to afford his hobby. But his struggle produced some beautiful planes. Hand crafted from planes scales down from real aircraft planes borrowed from librarys. Since he left this world behind along with a shed full of memorys I sit in there and just talk his hanger of air craft and crashed parts is my only contact I have. My dad always had massive pride in my natural ability to fly an RC aircraft and offer as a young boy at the field he would get me all set up and the distract the field marshal so that his 8 yo son could taxi my cabet sinyorita to the run way and be air born before anyone could stop me. And every single time by the time dad and someone from a club walked down to "supervise" my flight I would have the plane inverted 4 feet off the ground up the runways. Often I would hear some someone say very funny Pat. As they walked away. I've lost touch with this massive part of me. Work, girls, girlfriends, wife's, divorce, children, more work and stress has all filled my mind and life. In so as I think most men, I end up so busy just trying to keep my world together and happy in the flash second failure hit I am not cooling very well and have laxed into bad habits and depressed state of mind. In part of my recovery has been finding ways to get back to touch with any part of me that I could remember before life girls wife's kids and stress. Flight test keeps smashing me in my brain. You guys would have made my dad rock hard for fun again. And Jeremy is very much an inspiration to me. His willingness to be open about such a personal struggle and letting his hobbies become a step in overcoming his ansitity. I don't think I could ever bring myself to fly one of my dad's planes. I couldn't loose that memory that hand made craft. But I think I'm gonna have a go as this bad boy and show all of his grand children how easy it is for them to do and fly and if anyone of them take it up as Thier own hobbies I will help them fly a legacy plane from Thier pop. Thanks guys and thanks Jeremy. 😭

To Jeremy - flying IS not logical, it's for the birds. Anxiety about crashing in a simulator makes you very likeable. Maybe you are the type of sentient person that detests to shoot a figure made of pixels like I do detest it? Whenever I tried it was as if I'd rape my inner archetype of sacred life. And Jeremy, you can have confidence that there are a lot of unpretentious onlookers who may hardly have the opportunity to meet you in person, but be sure we would have a great time with you. Feel a hearty slap on your shoulder from me.

Trif, I wouldn't build the tiny trainer, the Ft cub is a better plane, more durable and more capable as you grow with skill too. If you haven't flown before, please ignore all the 3 ch for beginners rubbish, go with the full 4 ch with ailerons, it's easier to fly as you have much more control. I started on 4ch and I'm glad I did. Another big no no is stabilisation, all it does is fight you, takes away control and harms your learning, I have a video on my channel showing how stab screws with you if you want to see what I mean. I took it off and never looked back, full manual flight is the way forward! Ive built loads of different planes, the mini mustang, a cessna 180, ft explorer, ft storch, ft goblin but the cub is my daily flyer, it's large enough to be stable and small enough to be agile, mine gets ragged low and fast but also flown above the clouds on a regular basis, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one flying a ft cub the way I do lol. it's capable of so much more than the 'docile trainer ' Josh bixler thought he was designing, scrap the flitetest specs and run it on a racerstar BR2212 1400kv motor with a 9x5 prop, 30a esc and fly it on a 2700mah 3s. Put the esc on the underside of the power pod and put the battery inside it. Prop spacers glued into the foam will stop skewer damage and milk jug plastic on the belly will stop the foam being shredded on belly landings (I advise against landing gear) and milk jack plastic round the leading and trailing edges of the wing where the rubber bands go will prevent the bands cutting into the foam. Build your wing as normal and then once it's finished cut a slice into the underside, fill with hot glue and force a carbon fiber rod into it and the wing will not snap, EVER! You need to do it after building as you need to set the dihedral and can't if you put the rod in during construction. I also advise using MG90s metal gear servos, they will survive crash after crash. I slightly modify my cubs to have a shelf behind the windscreen and I put my reciever, cam switcher (I use two cams, one forward and one pointing down for keeping track of ground position when at high altitude ) and my voltage osd on that shelf, I mount my vtx on the outside on the side of the fuse just under the leading edge of the wing with cable ties, I use milk jug plastic on the inside to reinforce where the ties pass through the foam to stop it ripping. Here is a video showing what a cub is capable of, I think you will be surprised lol. The plane specs and links to the gear are in the description, check out my other videos too as I have many different flights including low fast flight on there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epvNlZp-f5ykaJY

@@stevefox3763 thanks for this, I've always wanted bank and yank controls rather than a rudder so I'm glad you said that I've flown fpv quads for a couple of years and still really struggle with roll when nose in, I never fly line of sight, time to learn on a plane, lol, I was going to build with a FC so I've got the option of stab on a switch for when my brain gets lost Thanks for the tip on servos and plastic reinforcement!

@@trif55 I'm building another cub that has an omnibus F4 pro flashed with ardupilot in it, my current daily flyer still flys fine but the F4 gives me the GPS with return to home if I need it, altitude and speed has the osd built in and has current and voltage sensing onboard though I'll only be using the voltage sensing and not current as voltage is all you need to know the state of your battery and it means I only have to run a thin wire from the battery in the power pod to the FC instead of a much thicker and heavier wire running from the pod to the FC and then back to the esc under the pod. Stab will not be one of the flight modes I program the FC with, I just be setting manual (what I will use most of the time, auto for missions and RTH. I always end up adding 30g of nose weight so the GPS module is going on the nose and can replace some of the lead and not actually increase the weight :) Bank and yank is so easy, you can launch, set your throttle and the fly the entire battery using just the right stick! Ive just started flying a 450 size quad I built, I haven't flown it fpv yet, I've just been having run ripping it about Los, I don't have Amy issues with Co ordinated turns but before I flew it ir planes I flew helis and so already had it instinctively. With foam board planes, the cub especially, they will survive crashes pretty well and often just pulling out the crumpled area will get you back in the air but if you trash it good you don't have to build a whole new air frame. I cut new sections of the damaged area slightly rather than is needed. Lay the new part aligned against the fuse and then cut through both the new and the old which makes matching cuts that will allow the new piece to align properly when you glue it in, I've chopped off the entire nose and bonded a new one in on a number of occasions. When making your templates, I strongly recommend that you use spray glue to stick your paper templates to posterboard and then cut that out leaving you with card templates you can use again and again to build new area or make repair patches. You can poke a blade through the card Into the foam along the score lines and then use a metal ruler to join them up with a cut/score

@@stevefox3763 I've not flown a 450 size, that'd be pretty cool for long range FPV flying if you live in a nice part of the countryside or can travel there! long flight times too, Yea I'm really loving how reparable foam board planes sound since I'm used to the crash resilience of carbon fibre quads! Thank you for the tip on the card templates, makes sense as it'll save a lot of re-printing!

all these sponsors must think the public is stupid, ive never seen one discount code that when you get to the site the discount is there for everybody if you have the code or not,how about helping these awesome creators out with a proper discount,as many people just go to the site from this video but don't use the code[how they make extra money fr4om the upfront fee] because they don't need it if you do go there PLZ USE THE CODE IT REALLY HELPS CREATORS OUT in the last 16 months over 60 creators i was subbed to no longer upload if we don't support them youtube will become nothing more than another tv channel but on the net

The best all rounder FT design is the Simple cub, its large enough to be stable and small enough o be agile, with some upgrades on the FT spec it can perform very well at low altitude for fast fun or climb above the clouds for some high altitude cruising. ive built many different foam board planes and i just keep flying the cub, im on version 4 now with each one having a slight modification over the previous. Cub mk4 is still flying just fine and regularly flys above the clouds but i have the mk5 under construction, this one is sporting an omnibus f4 pro flight controller flashed with Ardupilot :) Wanna see how high a cub can go? Check out this footage from my current daily flyer and chack out my other videos whilst your there, im pretty sure im the only one flying an FT Cub the way i do ha ha! kzbin.info/www/bejne/epvNlZp-f5ykaJY

ah yes. the planes that take only a small amount of time to build are the ones which are the most fun to fly. with balsa you have a plane that can almost always only be rebuilt when crashing but those simple foam board planes, you crash them and with half a hotglue stick they are airborne again
