This flight crossed the USA border into Canada, so you go through immigration and customs at both ends. Other flights to different destinations within the same country do not.

If there is no co-pilot, the right front seat is often used for passenger seating. There is no door between the cockpit and the cabin, so it is not an increased risk. So, when you book and when you board, be sure to ask the crew for that front seat if it is available. It's the best view!
