I really enjoy photographing the Horned Grebes. Where I live, there is only a 2 week window when we see them as they north to breed. This year, very few and did not come to the marina area. So I did not get any photographs. Even managed a few shots with fish in their beaks in previous years.

Loved this, Trond. And grebes are so mystifying. We have many grebes here in Alberta; I watched a pair of red-necked grebes building their nest on a fairly remote edge of a lake in south central Alberta. Building and cooing; I was on land tho, on a warm, sunny day. Thank you for all your suffering in that cold water.

Hello Trond. Another brilliant video that shows the patience required to achieve wonderful results. I have fond memories of Horned Grebes during vacations to Scotland. I have just got a Z9. Can I ask you which video settings you use? ie codecs, 4K settings shutter speeds etc. I have already had some nice results but would love to compare. Thanks!
@zenphotojourney2 жыл бұрын
I'm also interested in knowing what settings you use for video and why. I noticed you had a shutter speed of 500. Why that shutter speed? Does it make better slow motion? Maybe this would be a good subject for a future video.
@cliftonwhittaker2602 жыл бұрын
This was an amazing production, Trond. What I don't understand is why you don't use a wet suit when you are going to be in the water for long periods of time? Wouldn't that be much better than being so cold when you are photographing? Seems like comfort would add to the pleasure of your photography experience. Those pictures of the grebes were absolutely fantastic. :)

I think you could do better getting closer to the birds IF you get into the water from 60 to 90 minutes prior to sunrise. You want to be in position when it starts getting light enough for them to see well. Make your enter and exit point out of the sight of the birds or at the very least as far away from them as possible. You can move slowly and not disturb them. Also You don't need to add the grass and sticks. Move slowly and stay quiet and they will accept your being among them.
