Floating Folk Rock

Floating Folk Rock (5312b) is a backing track in the key of C major - but without the C major chord. The following chords appear in this track: F major (the subdominant), G major (the dominant) and E minor (the chord on the third degree of the C major scale). Although the whole track is clearly in the key of C major, the C major chord itself does not appear. The chords basically float above the tonic - hence the name "floating".
This version features guitar, bass and drums. There will be other versions of this track with additional piano or electric piano. Have fun playing along!

After a minute of "floating", I could jam over this chord progression with F as the "home" note (ie, playing F Lydian).

F Lydian sounds good. Just for fun I also tried G Mixalodean. Sounds weird, but interesting. Thanks for the idea!

👍😎 Thank you for your different perspectives! Yes, it almost seems like a question from geometry to me: which side is "up"? I see the sequence F-G-E minor-F as similar to a stable orbit around a C major planet. At the bottom on the ground is C major (or A minor!) and with each round I can "see" or "feel" the ground but without ever landing. But of course it also makes sense to see F major as "home". The Lydian scale also has something more floating about it (at least for me) in contrast to a fairly stable, "vertical", hard major scale. You could even feel at home in E minor and then stroll around in the almost mythical Phrygian scale. I think it's great that you engage with my tracks like this and share and discuss your thoughts. @@reinholdtracks I think the analogy of hovering on C but not landing on C is a good one. I checked a few sources and one example was referred - “Stella By Starlight” by Victor Young (I heard the Miles Davis' version on YT), which apparently doesn't have the standard cadences ("going home"). Usually, I prefer a "home" (for resolutions) but occasionally colouring outside the box can also be fun.
