Floating gears in a truck, plus a hidden 4th gear?

Greetings! I've only towed a 5th wheel RV twice (no other towing experience) but will be doing it significantly more come this summer. Bought your game a few weeks ago along with ATS and wanted to let you know how incredibly helpful both have been. I've been watching your videos, then I use your game to better understand the geometry/techniques involved in backing a trailer in various situations and then put it into practice in ATS (using the mirrors, G.O.A.L., etc.). So a big "Thanks!" for all the work you've put into your channel and your game.

I float 99% of the time. As a city LTL driver I find it speeds up the hundreds of shifts I have to make in a day and saves my clutch leg a bunch of wear and tear.

I think I'm going to have to start calling the accelerator "the diesel", that's awesome. Haha. When in school we were taught on 10 speed manuals and we had to double clutch. I've only ever had automatics since then.

I still use the same concept as yourself. I float when I can, but if topography or load type, as in tanker, dictate I should clutch to shift to not risk a missed shift, I do use the clutch.

I float. I only use the clutch to stop or when the gear binds and that usually happens when the ECM essentially disables the throttle pedal because of some sort of overly aggressive engine protection "feature". I heard someone posit that one problem with floating is once you get rolling the clutch is engaged in a single spot for long periods of time and that might cause issues--who knows? I also find double clutch is almost impossible heavily loaded starting out up hill because it's hard to get the gear changed before you stop rolling.

Your videos on backing have been very helpful. This explanation of floating was really easy to understand and as I continue to learn, I look forward to trying your methods. “Pressing the gas” has gotten many looks / mentions for me and multiple instructors have advised, this isn’t a “gas” truck. Really?

Off-topic question. Did you or will you add a map editor to your backing game? I would like to be able to make my own maps of some of my regular locations with my company that I have difficulty with.

I usually dont use the clutch unless I am getting the transmission out of gear when its loaded hard... Like pulling a hill and loosing speed, Ill double clutch to drop that gear a lot of the time.

I am wondering if you can talk about how to use speed and distance control when going down hills, and not using too much pedal break and engine break?

Depends on the conditions. Going down a grade from a stop or slow corner, I find double clutching is smoother. More often than not, depending on the truck, I clutch out and float in.. the older sloppy trucks you can just float all day smooth as butter. 😂

I float gear like 98% of the time but with the truck i have now i kick the clutch for the Hi&Low because he's a pain in the ass and kick the gear out for some reason 😅

I find that the tractors that are always floated, tend to drop out of gear when you take your foot off the accelerator, this can be a bit of a nuisance. It only seems to be the cruising gear that pops out, but again, can be annoying. The tractors where they are use best practices, don't have this problem, neither do the automated.

I clutched when I thought it necessary. Most of the time I floated, either way it worked.

I don't have an automatic restriction but I'm with an auto only company. I think of clutching and floating as being roughly the same, the maintenance benefits are irrelevant to me as a driver and apocryphal. I prefer to float up and double clutch down

When u were on 5th , How s the splitter is up and u down shift to 4 ?

There are two 4th gears, all the way to the right and back with selector down, and all to way to the left and back with the selector up. Most drivers don't know about that.

Completely depends on the situation, the truck you're driving, what you're hauling, etc. I float 95% of the time but I'm definitely not afraid to use the clutch when I need to.

I float. I was never taught how to double clutch, I have never tried it.

I haven't double clutched since trucking school. Floating is just easier. I only double clutch on my car out of respect for my syncrhos ... which of course are absent on any truck transmission.

So I think I did float in my training although I didn't know what I was doing and I believe if you do that on the test, they'll fail you lol.. I am still working on the levels and tried the crazy ones just so I can get better.. 🤞..

Looks like you need a bit more practice floating. Try giving a bit of rpm before you switch gears. Same for the down shift.
