There’s you cooing over your fit, I totally get that. When I reamed my home cast clarkson tool and cutter grinder center castings with a h7 reamer the fit of a precision 16mm ground shaft was very good and a similarly reamed 30mm bushing could be spun on the shaft and clearly demonstrate a air bearing effect. Liking your work.

Hi Nigel, just watched your floating reamer holder build and lapping video, and was duly impressed. When I tried to email you to receive the drawings for the project, it says that the provided address is not valid. Are the drawings still available, and if so, how would one go about acquiring a copy of them? On the strength of those two videos, I just subbed, and am looking forward to all of your content. Be well.

Would have been nice to see a print of the mating surfaces before and after lapping. To see whether or not it made it better, worse, same but shinier?

Hi there I'm new to this and would like to know the purpose of the floating reamer most people just use the chuck or by hand
@GoCreatehms
@GoCreatehms 3 жыл бұрын
Hi The floating reamer holder allows the reamer to align with the hole independently of the lathe tailstock alignment and thus produce a more accurate hole. If the tailstock is mis aligned slightly then a ream may produce a hole that's oversize or not perfectly parallel. If the tailstock and chuck are accurately aligned with the axis of the lathe spindle them you should get good results without using a floating reamer holder. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching my video.

Throw on a Jacobs chuck and it could do double duty as a tapping chuck.

I was concerned you were lapping 90% of the aluminum bronze vs the 4140 part due to the softness of the ab. It seems to have worked beautifully. Is the ab highly polished?

Yeah, I think that the Ali-Br did get more of a lap than the steel, but the tapers seen a better match, tightening the collar does seem a bit more positive. Thanks for your interest and complimentary comments, much appreciated.

Have come across the different fit, using the same reamer, caused by the use of water or oil based lube? Water is claimed, by someone who really knows his stuff, to make a tighter fit than oil. Your thoughts?
@GoCreatehms

Yes, I'm aware higher viscosity cutting fluid can increase the hole size and can be used to adjust hole sizes to within very fine limits. If memory serves Steffan Gottswinter discussed this in one of his videos, he works to finer limits than I would ever need to or could measure. I'm also aware, from a professional machinist, that the pilot hole size can also make a difference, over sizing the pilot hole, so the reamer takes a finer cut, can infact result in a larger hole size, but the material, cutting speed and feed also make a difference, so there's allot more to the subject than a hobby machinist may appreciate. Reamer alignment is but one variable which a Floating Reamer Holder can address. I'm don't know to what extent a Floating Reamer holder is used these days in industry were machine geometrical accuracy and positioning is to a very high degree of accuracy. A cnc machinist friend tells me he does not use reamers very much, prefers to use a boring head for accurate sized holes, neither does he use taps very much, prefers thread milling, believe it or not he's done thread milling down to M2 but I've heard of thread milling done down to even smaller sizes, quite amazing. I seem to have rambled on a bit, thanks again for your interest in my videos.

In my apprenticeship many years ago we always used reamers and taps which had centres and held against back centre but now I notice this has stopped progress?

Nice job, (excuse my bad english) is the cone 35 degrees radially or diametrical?
@GoCreatehms
@GoCreatehms 4 жыл бұрын
35 degrees from the axis of the part. I think a shallower angle may be better, I changed it to 20 degrees on my drawings. Hope you follow that OK.

Making it really solid defeats the entire purpose does it not?

Yes if you are reaming but if you want to use a drill with out having to change the chuck then you can tighten it up solid. At least that's the idea, I hope that helps. Thanks for your interest.
