I did a floating shelves with similar hardware but it was all welded together. I also used 1x8 pine.. which is actually only 3/4 inch thick so I had a fun time drilling straight without blowing out the sides (top/bottom of shelf). A trick I came up with was to use a very bright flashlight to shine into the hole every couple inches to make sure I wasn't getting too close to a blowout. The wood would glow brighter the closer I was. I plan on using LED strips to backlight and front light my collectibles and of course use diffusion channels and sheets I harvested from old broken TVS

Great video thank you! I made some shelves very similar myself and I squirted some silicone caulking in each of the holes before I slid the Shelf into place. It would keep the Shelf from pulling out if in the unlikely circumstance of someone standing on the couch and losing their balance. They could grab the Shelf to catch their balance without it falling down on top of them.

The addition of the LED light strip, amazing. As you point out it's now a reading lamp neatly tucked under the floating shelf. Dual functions (shelf + light) but really triple function because that cedar board looks good with the stained panel.

thank you for pointing out some potential issues (particularly with the hardware) and for the insight regarding the use of the points on the grub screws -- particularly important if/when your shelf board or other elements are not perfectly aligned.

My Daughter asked me last week if she could get a long floating shelf. My experience with commercially available shelves in Australia has not been good. They are expensive and made from inferior materials, basically a box construction with a metal backplate with two prongs. Your design seems to be the way to go. Thank you.

I agree with you that the grub screws used to hold the metal rod onto the metal bracket are the weak point. So much so that I don't think that's a very good design. I live where there's lots of vibrations from traffic and construction. Can that screw vibrate free in either direction? I hope you update us in a year or two about this shelf. It certainly looks good, though. Thanks, Linn.

I think I commented earlier, did you ever check out Ian Kirby's torsion box style invisible mount shelves? He had articles way back in the black and white days of fine woodworking magazine, up into the 1990s or later in other magazines. They have to be thicker since they are made of all wood without any metal reinforcement bars, but are pretty cool and versatile design options.
