Flow Defence products are passive flood barriers which require no human intervention to activate. The flood barrier will rise into position from buoyant forces by intercepting flood water at the crest of the driveway (or other ground surface) and storing it in an underground channel before water can enter the underground carpark.
Flow Defence (FD) flood barriers intercept floodwater only when it reaches the crest of the driveway and will therefore not open prematurely. With ~10mm of water depth over the 6000mm wide grated inlet, the interception chamber will fill in just over 60seconds raising the barrier whilst filling.
Warning lights mounted on either side of the barrier illuminate and flash during operation.
SEALING MECHANISM
The Flow Defence flood barrier is a self-contained unit where the collection channel also houses the barrier.
The barriers sealing operation is all done from the downstream side of the channel which allows full unrestricted access to the upstream side of the barrier for maintenance where optional pre-screening baskets can also be installed.
The seals remain above water level as the barrier is displaced and the sealing mechanism becomes watertight before floating debris can be caught between the barrier and sealing frame
A key feature of the design are angled lugs that guide the seals during compression and act as a canter lever point by providing a fixed connection between vertical barrier supports and the concrete chamber. This configuration reduces barrier deflection from hydrostatic forces.
RETAINED FLOODWATER
The FD barrier will remain in the upright position until flood waters recede and the collection channel is drained.
The barrier can be lowered using one of three methods:
• Submersible pump installed within the FD channel collection sump. This is activated by a float switch, draining the pit automatically and lowering the barrier provided power is still available to the site during a flood event.
• The self-siphon system will prime when flood water fills the collection channel. A tamper proof valve (valve with no handle) can be open after flood water recedes. The retained water captured by the FD interception channel will then be drained into the underground carpark (~3,000L) lowering the barrier at the same time.
• Any pump on a maintenance vehicle with a suction hose can access the FD interception channel by removing access grates from the property boundary at ground level. Water in the collection chamber can then be discharged to the street kerb or landscaped area while lowering the barrier.
MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
Flow Defence flood barriers should be de-sludged using an educator truck after every flood event in which the barrier activates. The barrier is not required to be removed during maintenance. The sealing mechanisms are located below ground level and are out of direct sunlight minimising any environmental or impact hazards.
• Advise all concerned parties of the proposed date and time of cleaning.
• Obtain approvals from the appropriate authorities.
• Prepare necessary Safe Work Method Statements.
• Provide barricades in working areas and signs to prevent injuries to public or staff.
• Remove inlet grates.
• Lower vacuum hose, remove debris and sediment while cleaning all components with a high pressure hose (most Wet Vac combination trucks have this facility).
• Remove vacuum hose and replace inlet grates.
• Record site location, date and time of clean and duration of clean.
INSPECTIONS
We believe that the unit life will be enhanced significantly by using Flow Defence staff to monitor and maintain the flood barrier.
Flow Defence flood barriers should be inspected (half yearly) and serviced (annually) to ensure they are clean and free from material buildup.
6 Month Inspection:
• Interception channel sump inspected for material build up (water, sediment or debris).
• Flexible seal and guide frame inspection.
• Full maintenance report.
• Determine if service is required.
Cleaning After Unit Operation:
• Remove sludge and sediment using Vac Truck.
• Clean components with high pressure spray.
• Flexible seal and guide frame inspection.
• Full cleaning report.
If you require further information or details about our competitive inspection, cleaning and reporting service please contact Flow Defence.

This is such a complicated system, requiring to much maintenance for every flood. The more complicated a system is, the more things could go wrong. I think a better solution can be found, with a fully passive system (which does not require cleaning after every flood). But still, that's a step in the right direction.

Hi Alban thanks for your feedback. All stormwater will contain sediment and debris, the benefit of this system is that the barrier is not prevented from returning to its resting state before cleaning and the barrier does not need to be removed should cleaning be necessary, unlike other products on the market that do not have these features. The feedback so far has generally been that it is a simple system, however the various draining options may give the impression that its complicated but they are just site specific options. It would be good practice to check the sump after each flood event and depending on how much sediment has built up, that would determine the cleaning requirements.

Alright, if it's easy and efficient, maybe install an automatic cleaning device or an easy way to clean it after a flood. Some kind of drawer for collecting sediment and debris. Because calling a team to clean the barrier is a waste of time and money. If you automate the cleaning, the user will never(or way less often) have to worry about the barrier.

The device has been designed in such a way that optional removable baskets can be installed below the grates for manual cleaning. For any remaining accumulated sediment a vac truck is actually a very economical way of removal and as mentioned previously this is a simple process since the location of the barrier allows unrestricted access to the sump.

Wow, Ok, you convinced me! I don't actually need a Flood barrier, but if I ever do, I'll think about you guys.

It is also because if there’s not water in the parking water will be able to just go as a normal drain because there won’t be an overfilling inside parking

Who copied who? You or the people who designed the "Self Closing Flood Barrier"?
@FlowDefence
@FlowDefence 7 жыл бұрын
This is a self contained unit, water enters the chamber directly at surface level and the channel can be accessed for maintenance without removing the barrier. This means less surface area is required for installation and fewer underground services are impacted, this design also prevents the barrier from opening prematurely. The other device you mention has a separate service pit that is used to capture surface flows, this requires a greater surface area, impacts more underground services and allows the barrier to activate before water is at the driveway crest. The barrier also needs to be removed to get access the the chamber. Both devices were granted separate patents due to their different operating features.

flood water contain some small impurities that may choke this whole system ....what is the solution of this kind of problem ?
@FlowDefence
@FlowDefence 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Swapnil, the grates stop large debris from entering the chamber and the seal is above water level until it is compressed so the impurities that you mention will not interfere with the sealing mechanism.
