Agree. Thanks Matt for making this. I dont live in the flood zone, but I grew up there and I still have a ton of friends and family there. I'm sure they'd be happy to have hands, knowledge, or materials if you can spare them.

Incase someone finds this video while trying to figure out what to do after a leak in your home. This is only the standard of care for heavily contaminated waters known as Category 3 or Black water (i.e. rising flood water and sewage). If your water comes from a clean source like a pipe or your water heater you have more opportunity to salvage all the materials Matt just said to trash out. You should reach out to a Restoration contractor for salvaging as much as possible.

Excellent overall. However you should discourage use of bleach. The water content is high, and the chlorine dissipates rapidly by evaporation. Chlorine is highly toxic and it is extremely corrosive. Other mold specific cleaners avoid these problems and are effective in smaller amounts.

Also worth mentioning is it you can get an air conditioner running whether it be window units or even better, a central system, that will help dry things out. A dehumidifier is nothing more than an air conditioner that exhausts the heat from its condenser back inside instead of outdoors. Of course you will have to choose between having house completely open with natural air drying and house closed up with ac running. If it is as humid as Houston can be sometimes I'd rather close the house up and run the ac or humidifiers. Or both would be even better.

Dehumidifiers take the moisture of the air so the moisture in porous materials will pulls itself out and evaporate into the air, the cycle repeats until the place it dry

Matt a worked with a mold remediation company when a was remodeling a flooded house. They gutted the house with tyvek suits and respirators. When it was gutted the told us that you can't kill the mold all the way so the basically put a shellac on everything to seal the wood and keep the mold from speading. This was the proper way they said. I would suggest people look it up to verify what is suggested so as not to have the mold continue to grow after they think they have it all cleaned up.

Matt, I love your videos as I am a geek to with technical stuff. 2 things I would add to this is 1 never, unless you have no choice use beech. The bleach only kills for the 1st 30 seconds it is applied, (corrections depts don't even use it to clean up blood anymore) and in an area that's damp fro the water and may have mold grow back there is a reasonably priced paint encapsulate that Walmart sells. (sorry got wordy there). 2. after you shut off power, and clean and dry every thing,,PLEASE have an electrician change all the receptacles and switches that were underwater as the contacts within the devices rust and arc, just bad all around. But my suggestions aside great video Matt, keep it up. thx, Ron

The brand Wiss makes a scissor called the 11 inch shop shear. Though the blade is far from 11 inches I found it to be the best option for cutting out the wet insulation. Grab the bottom pull it out against the drywall and snip it off. I would call removing the insulation the most important part or at least the part that can not be skipped. Insulation doesn’t release water once absorbed.

Good info. I just started watching your channel and have been enjoying the content. We always recommend using a product with the EPA listing which at least in our area is what the insurance companies want to see in mitigants. However, in an emergency situation anything that you can get on to kill bacterial and mold growth is better than a superior product that you can't find or have to wait for.

Don't forget to also add sodium hypochlorite (chlorine) to each flooded room DURING the flood up to about 0.5ppm. It helps mitigate mold potential tremendously once the water goes down. I even considered flooding my own basement with clean water while the floodwaters were rising. There's a lot to discuss about this.
@mmorris180
@mmorris180 2 жыл бұрын
Very good advice but although you touch on it, people don’t understand and neither does this video show why you would even consider pre-flooding your house with clean water… most won’t have the opportunity or knowledge to try to mitigate the damages by pre-flooding the structure, and all of these misleading videos do not cover how to remediate the inside of the contaminated porous building materials like the slab, the studs and other areas that surface cleaning will not remediate contamination from. All of this video shows surface cleaning but that does nothing for the mold and bacterial contamination floodwaters that have sat in their home for 3 to 6 days and soaked all the way to the core of each stud, the slab and other areas of the house which surface cleaning like he is describing does absolutely nothing to stop the majority of the contamination from seeping back out into the home afterwards and less all of the porous surfaces have been properly cleaned, treated and then sealed with a very specific anti-microbial shellac primer or something of that sort which will seal the remainder that is soaked to the core from seeping back out after they rebuild. I understand and follow you correctly, you can mitigate some of that if you presoak the structure with freshwater so that you reduce the amount of contaminated water soaking into the studs and slab to the core which nobody ever addresses and is very misleading to tell them they can just surface cleaner and then rebuild over it and they’ll be OK. God Bless
@Cotronixco
@Cotronixco 2 жыл бұрын
@@mmorris180 Absolutely, and that's why I brought it up. To me, the most critical areas affected by floodwater are not surfaces, but the structures that are unseen. Since we know in our area (Mississippi River) when the floods are going to occur weeks ahead of time, it gives us a chance to clear out items and pre-treat structures. We have been successful in doing so. But as you stated, most people are uninformed and unable to mitigate these situations properly; and I stated above, there's a lot to discuss about this.

I have a home in the Deep South Mississippi, my grandfather left it. It has an exterior stairwell which has flooded the last 10 years. Abandoned really, I imagine the basement is regularly flooded. The mold is everywhere. Just going in the house ruins your clothes. So I’m going to stop the flooding and tear everything out. I’m just wondering if there is a way to measure mold after it’s all cleaned and dried. Apart from our nose is there a method of detection?

Great video and I appreciate your heart for the Lord. I wanted to get clarity. I had water damage over engineered hardwood over a concrete slab. I had a company take up the wood but they left a TON of glue and all still on there where I feel less than half the concrete is exposed. I got a fan from Home Depot and dehumidifier. I did see it fill up a bucket of water, so it’s working. I have a $50 moisture meter from Lowes that shows the undamaged concrete reading at 30%, so I set that as my goal. After a couple of days, the part that had gotten wet still has 70-100% readings. I want to avoid calling a company in, but it seems to not be working. What should I do?

Thanks you for this great guide. Two weeks ago on the morning of July 7th, the little town of Mabi in western Japan was inundated with 5-6 meters of floodwater after river levees to the south of the town broke in 3 places. For the past two weeks, I, my wife and friends have been putting in 12 hour days to clean and strip out all the damaged parts of our house; ground floor interior walls, insulation, ceiling and floors as well as 2nd floor interior walls and insulation up to about 90cm. Yesterday we finally finished removing all the wet materials and it feels like we've just made it to the top of the initial foothills of the Himalayas with the real climb still ahead of us. Sometimes I wish my house had just burnt down - it would be so much easier. 50 people perished and 4100 homes and 100s of businesses were destroyed. Will it ever be the same again? Thank you for your tips. Many of them we had already put to use so I feel better after hearing them from an expert. Good luck everyone.
