Major flash flooding hit Ruidoso and wildfires like the Salt Fire also impacted the area in June 2024. Here's a look at damage to the area, as well as to Las Vegas, NM, during the month.

Attempting to redirect water from it's original/usual flow path almost always ends in disaster. Building permanent structures in a known and mapped flood plain or flood way also almost always ends in disaster. The building of water diversion structures years ago is causal to the flooding we are seeing now and have seen for the past decades. Humans are not the masters of the environment we live within, capable of manipulating it fit our perceived needs. Mother Nature has no rivals...and will not tolerate challenges to her ultimate supremacy. This is one of the many reasons why our federal government is buying up private lands that have been subjected to multiple natural disasters time and time again. It's cheaper to reclaim the land using eminent domain and returning the lands to their natural state than it is to continuously pay out FEMA funding to allow the landowners to attempt to rebuild.

Just west the Swiss Chalet in Ruidoso on a small rise a cabin that I stayed in twice years ago. Very nice. The owner kept my deposit the last time I stayed there because of two candy wrappers left in a bedroom trash can and one straight back chair was moved from one room to another. Punk move to make $150.00. Now there is no cabin.

Señor, the water runs different now because all the trees are gone, and the fire baked the topsoil into ceramic. Instead of soaking and channeling away like it used to, the water now runs off in a sheet all at once, causing the floods and debris flows.

People living in flood zones surrounded by pretty scenery can also become a fire boiler when wild fires occur so yea ! All predictable. Don’t buy land n live in such areas. Like living on along ocean fronts then being sad when a hurricane or rising water takes your investment. Nature is boss, ur just renting or buying d illusion of ownership. ! Mother Nature can be calm , beautiful, but she can also b a mean psychopath ! Be glad u still alive when she decides to shake things up.
