Dear Uzair Younus, Greetings from Mumbai. Very loaded conversation, thanks to your provocative Qs and highly knowledgable guest . Appreciate the guest for her clear mind and lucid way of articulating her thoughts. Many of the points which came up during the conversation apply to India , even though we have been tackling issue of floods for decades. Damage and impact on lives of people due to flood can be minimised by : -Reliable forecast-short & long term for rains and floods -Delineating floodplains along rivers- zoning to be done and implemented strictly ( inviting financial and legal actions for violations) . Indian states have failed miserably in implementing structly, due to political and high cost of rehab of people occupying restricted zone -Gov insuring assets, livestock, agro produce in and around flood plains . Indian states have partially succeeded in this aspect. - Technically sound Flood control measures - Disaster Control Management plan (DCMP) involving all the stake holders - local civil authorities, police, armed forces, people etc for districts and states . Such DCMP be tested annually based on dry runs to test systems and processes Strongly believe India, Pakistan and other South Asian countries shud join hands under SAARC or some UN body ..we shud have a common : -focussed Working group ( consisting of scientists, researchers) on study of Climate change in Himalayan region , glaciers , Indian ocean -Weather Forecasting (why not have grid of weather satellites and earth stations across south asian countries? ) Technology Centre covering South Asia and other areas which will impact South Asians -Forum for sharing Lessons from handling of Natural Disasters- for research scholars, students, media , gov bodies -high level Disaster Control Management Plan template agreed between contagious countries 🙂 it may sound like a big wish list, but it will happen one day for sure Regards , Sanjay

Informative and in depth conversation. One thing that strikes me that there is a change in narrative that every natural calamity,be it flood, or draught or cyclones we, alongwith the western countries, starts to blame on climate change and forgetting the point that much of the destruction is happening because our poor planning or lack of planning or lack of proper masterplan to control floods or draughts. Climate change is certainly a factor for these weather extremes but in our South Asian countries, to use only this narrative from the top official level and news media level is rather surprising because we never had that kind of climate resilient infrastructure to fight these events. In India , intensity and frequency of cyclones increased significantly. From my personal account, in the coastal regions a Multipurpose Cyclones Centres have been constructed in large numbers, say, for every three to four Panchayats ie our rural local government. These facilities have proved their efficacy in last three to four years in avoiding loss of human lives and valuables. I think Frist we need to build climate resilient infrastructure and then we can avoid loss and damages of human lives and property. Regular listener to your podcast. Appreciation from India. Regards.

The question to seek is how many down stream barrages are on river streams. Are they keeping intact the dry river beds or doing construction out there? How many down stram lakes, ponds and dams ( for water storage) are being constructed? Ms hayat is from notre dam, get inspired by river network planning of holland.

You guys should visit india. Thousands of cities on gangetic planes were saved in 2013 floods by tehri dam, this dam creates hydroelectricity and has water reservoir that helps in irrigation when rain fall is low. Please come over here with your delegations of civil engineers and planners. One ancient town called old tehri was relocated yo make a reservoir lake This was done about 25 years ago with Russian collaboration. There are hundreds of similar projects all over india. Much regards.

Also please ask you political class to use international forums to give right sound bites. We are tired of majhabi talks, k rant and islamophobia raps. We are human beings and neighbours.
