For me there's no such thing as "the black dog" the often used euphemism for depression, it's most definitely "black birds". It's always darkest before the dawn. In that space before dawn "black birds sing", loud, clear, light like Flo sings this wonderful song, it's their moment each and every day. I get get depression almost every day around this time. I think back to days gone by I think back every morning. I used to use loads of drugs and alcohol, stay up raving dancing screaming all night. Tired, beyond tired and coming down, walk that last stretch of road to my bed is when the black birds sang the loudest. Just me and the blackbirds my timid footsteps, always just me and the black birds even if I had someone in tow or others in tow, each one always alone with the blackbirds feeling much the same. Some have died some hide but we all had those blackbirds. I never escaped those blackbirds. That dark moment before dawn, blackbirds ringing out at me loud and clear even when they were long gone. Seemed the colonials exported them every fucking where. From London to the Cape of Africa to the Antipodes, blackbirds (the real thing) loud and clear, singing the song of my depression. Today I still wake up before dawn depressed, have done so forever even as a child. Blackbirds ringing out at me loud and clear. It's how I wake up, morning depression. I wake up scared worried and feeble most days of my life, afraid of the new day and its torturous pain. Never angry, never loud just feeble and afraid. Some wake up angry, moody, not me, black birds, Turdus marula (Black Thrush) black birds. So this song is pertinent one could say, you just never get to "bury that horse in the ground" if it's with you forever. Sobriety doesn't do it when it's with you forever. it helps though, it certainly helps. Besides, my best friend in life was Iolanthe, my beloved Iolanthe, an angelic mare. I cried when i buried her I never stopped crying, she was the only one who could silence the black birds. She used to dance rings around me light as a fairy whenever we met in the green fields of my childhood home, me a mere mortal had Iolanthe a strong and powerful horse by my side. Together we were the strongest I've ever been. She still showers me with light but its mostly the pain I remember when losing her when I look back. Had I done something wrong to break her heart, could I have fixed her heart. She died of a hole in the heart and sadly all we could do was wait for the fatal day it would burst. In those eyes no black bird ever sang.
