MiguelÁngel tenía una personalidad complicada. Era un tipo melancólico, distante, y a veces cascarrabias. Era arrogante y paradójicamente hipersensible. El genio era adicto al trabajo. Rara vez se bañaba como si no pudiera soportar estar lejos de su amado mármol. Miguel Ángel tampoco soportaba la competencia. Cuando era adolescente, habló mal de un rival celoso y recibió un puñetazo en la nariz. Ese golpe lo dejó para su duradera humillación, con la nariz torcida de por vida. El artista era gay, en una época en la que la sodomía era un delito. Su enamoramiento más notorio fue el de un noble romano mucho más joven, Tommaso de Cavalieri. Cerca del final de su vida, Miguel Ángel quedó impregnado por el puritanismo de la Contrarreforma.
