Powerhouse of commerce, trading, banking and culture..all that made Florence the cradle of Renassaince. A small city with a very limited population created all that. It was a myracle but also a mistery...!!!!

I think you do some disservice to the Medici family by representing them as egotistical. Their fostering of the arts spanned generations of very learned Medici men and women, and much of it was funded from personal money, for the enjoyment of all Florence, not just the wealthy. And as for the paintings which show Medici family members in place of the biblical figures, there is much evidence that painters chose to do this as a way to show the great esteem in which this family was held by contemporary Florence

They did. In 1713 Cosimo III altered the law to let his daughter Anna Maria Luisa succeed his son Gian. Unfortunately, she died without any heir as well. For what happened next, I am not an expert.

It is obvious that these decor has never been finished. All those "pockets" were meant for statues and it looks like it would have had lots of decorative painting. Someone somewhere ran out of time, money or life itself. Such a pitty.

True, it would be more appropriate to say they owned it. Later on, though, they would actually rule it as the dukes of Tuscany.

People continue idealising Florence and Renaissance and families.Loving Medici family?Maybe people should read about those butchers and then talk about it.Modern Florence is ,by the way,one of the most overrated cities in the world, impossible to live and work in.
