Mistreatment often leads to aggression. Also, sometimes people express their own self image through their choice of dog, meaning people who see themselves as tough, strong, etc., will choose a breed that they think is similar to their self-image. I will tell you why people don't report loose dogs. My neighbors dog came in the yard of my home daycare approached the children and growled at them. I called animal control and the next year of our life was hell. My husband is a cop. She repeatedly called his supervisor he almost lost his job. They harassed us, threatened and intimidated us. They threw fireworks at our house. It got so bad we moved and i closed my daycare just so my husband wouldn't loose his job and we could have peace and be safe. People who let their dogs roam feel entitled and they get angry and aggressive when they get called on it.

I'm really sorry you went through that. There are indeed so many entitled people around here who feel like they don't have to use a leash or control their dogs. Having said that, I don't think you should have moved. Leaving like that only would serve to positively reinforce such toxic behavior. I think every state has laws against stalking and harassment at this point, and you very well may have been able to gather evidence on video (equipment might have been cheaper than moving) and either seek criminal charges or get a restraining order. If your husband's supervisor was aware of the situation, he or she should have supported your husband; if your husband nearly lost his job because of someone else's wrongful behavior, that's more of a problem with the job (or its management) than anyone else involved.

It seems like there is an uptick in dogs attacking people, and I think they've all been pitbulls or pit mixes lately. There is a video of a guy on a bicycle that was attacked by some loose pitbulls, a couple running away from a pack of loose pitbulls, an elderly woman in California was attacked in front of her home, an elderly man in Texas was killed by loose pitbulls - in the latter instance the owners were sentenced for their dog's crimes. A guy in Pennsylvania was attacked when he tried to keep one or more loose pitbulls from attacking kids on Halloween. It wasn't the first time the dogs in the last two instances had been loose and unsupervised. These are just the reports making the news. All these reports do is reinforce the belief that pitbulls are dangerous animals who tend to be owned by irresponsible people.

One of the local politicians saw what happened and he had the owner of the dog arrested right then and there telling him that he scared me and my dog to death, which was true. These people that walk these dogs in public parks can't even control them on a lead they're so powerful. Our park staff will even supply a lead for people that are unaware of the park rules and laws, and you should see how arrogant people get when they offer them a lead. Apparently they knew already the dogs were a problem, but, we have to wait until some poor child dies a horrible death and now suddenly reaching out to the public for help. This is not an isolated incident, you read about these things happening on a regular basis. As far as waiting for the dogs owner to come forward, good luck with that. I can't imagine the pain and grief these parents are going through because apparently these dog owners that have vicious dogs have more rights than you or I. The owners had multiple reports by neighbors but still nothing was done and now look what happened. So next the dog owners will be booked and let out the next day like all criminals these days. There is no punishment. Those dogs should have been taken away after one or two reports, but nope, that didn't happen. Explain that to the parents of the dead child. How horrific !!

The owners in cases like this (druggies/criminals) want violent dogs. They do this for protection against the landlord, the Police drug raid team, rival criminals etc. Yes, she knew exactly what those dogs were. They were her bodyguards. They let themselves out of the yard and waited at the entrance of the subdivision for Mammy's return from her drug deals.

I can't imagine the trauma the other child and the mother went through witnessing the attack and the lasting effects of that in addition to the horrible grief. My heart breaks for Michael, the other little boy, the mother, and all of the family.😭💔 My heart goes out to the first responders who had to assist with such an unspeakable horror. The other video of the poor Mother screaming in the background is blood curdling. Will never be able to get it out of our head. It's absolutely horrendous. God give her the strength to get through this after what she has had to see and go through. She protected her son and warned others to even stay away so they wouldn't be hurt. Asked others to get her gun so she could deal with it. God Bless Michael and keep him in yours arms. The owner of the dogs (Amanda Franco) is an absolute monster based on her police record. Heavenly Father why did it have to come to this? Her inner demons came out and killed an innocent child based on the choices she made listening to them. Just heart wrenching. Can't believe it.

This is not the child's fault and it's not the fault of the animals either. They were probably being mistreated/abused by this horrible excuse for a human being. Not only should pet owners be responsible for keeping dogs properly fenced/secured, but they should also be responsible for ethical treatment of their animals. I guarantee you her animals are treated horribly in order to keep them aggressive so she can use them as protection. Not only should she be charged with homicide, she should also be charged with animal cruelty. An innocent child's life and 2 innocent animal lives were/will be lost as a result of her actions and choices and a family has been changed forever. I hope she lives the life she deserves!

Condolences to Michael’s family. So many people have dogs and other pets thinking how cute they are and how they can entertain the owners. Yet, as the animal service director said, there comes a great responsibility owning pets, especially ones who can easily kill. It doesn’t help that the owner of these two dogs already has a record and irresponsibly has poor security. That fence wasn’t even secured. RIP AND JUSTICE FOR MICHAEL. 🙏🏼

Wow, this 13-yr-old spokesperson for Volusia Co. has obviously learned, from her YEARS of experience, how to address a community, grieving this tragedy of unknown suffering. Let's start by: 1. Being Extremely DEFENSIVE (w/out provocation); 2. Praising yourselves for whatever action Was taken; 3. And, not even one word acknowledging this family's LOSS of THEIR YOUNG CHILD. 4. Having a great PR team.

Actually......her blunt facts and information, were quite refreshing. Some if us want info, data, facts of the event....I've had enough "condolences". In fact. grieving people, get fed-up of hearing about your "thoughts and prayers". It's tragic.... but sticking to the facts, in a clear, concise and timely manner is what most of us want to hear.

That's a sad story, there is a leash law in this community. Dogs have to be contained in a fence. Dog tie outs are against the law because they can cause aggression. Last I read in the news a loose dog, the owner is fined $500.00 1st offense, $1000.00 2nd offense, $1,500.00 3rd offense but those figures are from about 10 years ago. Our animal care center is open 24/7, it never closes.
