Founded by Arlan L. Rosenbloom, MD, Adjunct Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine and founder of the UF pediatric endocrinology division, Florida Diabetes Camps take place each summer and are a part of the YMCA’s Camp Winona in Deland, Florida. Nearly 400 kids with diabetes attend each year to enjoy the summer, meet new friends and receive care and guidance on how to live with their disease. The UF division of pediatric endocrinology staffs the camp and integrates the camp with research being done at UF. There are two sessions to accommodate children ages 9 to 12 and 12 to 14. At camp, children improve confidence and self-esteem and learn the social skills of positive interaction that stay with them for a lifetime.
