Florida Keys GRAND SLAM - BONEFISH / PERMIT / TARPON on FLY from a KAYAK!!!

8/15/2022 - After many, many years of fishing, I accomplished my biggest fishing goal. I managed to find, sight cast, and land a bonefish, a permit, and a tarpon all in the same day. Great video. I was excited for you with that permit. I'm from Canada and have fly fished the keys but only wading from shore. Looks like i will have to bring my kayak next time

Haha thank you!! Bucket list fish crossed off for sure! You can still find some fish wading, but I always prefer the kayak because it allows you to get further to more fish and away from where other people would be wading as well. As long as it's not windy it's the better option in my opinion

I have always done my wade fishing from key largo to bahia Honda, maybe I should hit the lower keys. By the looks of it you are on the bay side, not ocean. We are here for the winter near port Charlotte. I will have to rent a place down there for a few days and bring my native watercraft peddle kayak along

@@karlpeter2285 I've heard the bonefishing is pretty great in the upper keys too, you tend to see more tailing redfish. But the lower keys has a lot to offer as well! I think they work the same kind of areas all along the keys but I haven't fished much in the upper part so I can't say for certain. If you can get down there then I'd say go for it!

@@karlpeter2285 there are many boat ramps that you can use, but most places along the road that look big enough you can launch from. Also some bridges can be good too

I'm staying in the keys from 6/7/23 through 6/14/23! I have access to 2 kayaks and I'm bringing an 8wt fly rod. This video has me pumped! Any pointers or tips for a guy from Colorado fly fishing the ocean for the first time?

8wt is definitely a good choice, but if you hook a bigger tarpon or permit you may be undersized, like I was with my permit. But still doable for sure! Tarpon you can find around bridges or deep undercuts usually all along the Keys, but the permit and bonefish like more flats with moving water. Bones like the shallow rocky hard bottom in the lower Keys with some patchy grass areas, but too much grass and I don't find them. Permit...I don't know enough about finding them, just come across them in the same areas, sometimes I see them, usually just spook them. A lot of places close to the main road actually hold fish, so just gotta check them out. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info! I am bringing a dozen spawning shrimp flies and half a dozen deceiver (white and blue and glittery streamers). Is there a good fly shop in the keys and do you have any fly suggestions?

@@someguy2269 7 Mile fly shop on Marathon and Ye old English fly shop on Summerland Key, both should be able to give you some local Intel. Ton of tarpon around right now! Those are pretty good get around patterns, they may have others to get you around

Thanks! Absolutely epic day! Can't tell you that info, worked hard to find it haha, but honestly all of the Keys have all three species, just varies the time of year you can find them. Islamorada is a really good area for finding them!

To be honest, I will be travelling there at the end of the year for the first time (I'm coming a long way! - UK) and would really appreciate a few basic pointers (if you don't mind) on what parts of the keys to focus my general fishing efforts. I can imagine that I will be hiring a kayak so will be self-guiding... seeking bonefish, tarpon and /or permit on fly. Thanks 👍

@@chuckarooful honestly a lot of the Keys are really good fishing for those three species, just have to find them. I like the lower Keys as they are usually less populated, but both sides of the Keys will hold those three fish. Most bridges for tarpon, any flat that is 1-3ft deep for the other fish. They like moving water and white patchy areas, not too much grass. Sometimes around the backs of mangrove islands too for bonefish

I didn't realize that the lower keys had bonefish. Thought they were around Key Largo. Great day of fishing. Were you using the same weight rod for all three?

To my knowledge they are all up and down the Keys, but I've only fished for them down in the lower Keys. Maybe they are harder to find down here, not sure. It was a perfect day in my book haha. Yep 8wt for all of them! Although the permit was definitely a 10wt fish, just didn't have mine on me

Thank you! It was a perfect day that's for sure. It's called a Foreverlast Inc. Generation 3 Fishing Net, got it from Amazon. It floats and is soft so it doesn't hurt the fish and also doesn't catch your hook

Are you talking about fishing in the Keys? You can pretty much go anywhere and catch fish down there, the bridges are usually pretty plentiful! As far as guides I would Google it or go to the docks and see whose doing what kinda fishing and what kinda trip you are looking for. Hope that helps!

It's a Wright and McGill Sabalos, it was a really good reel I had for roughly 10 years. Definitely would recommend it if you can find it, but they have been discontinued unfortunately
