Swimming... in a flash flood. That's got to be the funniest thing you've ever said, Simon. It's not the depth of the water, it's how fast it's flowing, and when 3ft of water wants to go somewhere, it will go there, and take your knees out as surely as a sledgehammer.

Having been swept away by various bodies of water, I can confirm. Each ended in injuries varying from mild lacerations to the palms of my hands and soles of my feet, to a two day coma and at least one period where my mortal and unconscious form chose not to breathe for about 6-8 minutes and was kept extant by means of a timely ambulance and the efforts of a Dutch tourist. So they told me at the hospital. That was a river and f-ck me they do not mess about. Got less of a beating from the Indian goddamn Ocean.

I also think there has to be an incident where a dog saved its owner from an alligator. Dogs have saved people from bears, big cats, and house fires. That’s not even considering working dogs who find people in mountains and stuff. I used to have a friend who hated dogs and said there was no reason anyone should have a dog and I was like, “working dogs exist and perform essential functions. This includes therapy dogs and service animals.”

Thankfully, we were all around to see it happen, and he only swatted it down to the ground, so we actually got it away from him and put it in our recently vacated hamster cage to let it recover. We called to see if any animal shelters could take it, but they wouldn't accept it, but at least told us how to take care of it. So, we nursed it back to health over a few days and eventually put the cage outside one night with the top off and it flew away. Definitely one of our families proudest and most favorite cat stories.

Simon an friends - It's not the swimming, that's the problem. It's what's in the water. The amount of debris just beneath the surface in rushing water can impale you, crush you and suck you under where you just end up in some sort of meat grinder type scenario. On top of that there's usually a ton of waste water added and so infections are bound to happen. It can seem like just an easy swim but you can't tell what's under the water. Lost a friend of mine who tried to swim to his dad a few blocks away. His body was found days later.

To be fair, the two dogs of the first man were probably trying to attack the alligator, but they couldn't hurt an alligator that big

Julian, thank you for the subtle and elegant way of dealing with the swearing. It is so much less distracting and annoying than the quacks.

The alligator attack happened about two miles from my home in Naples, in a neighborhood called The Quarry. Most people in Florida have the common sense to not walk their pets near a large body of water at 11 PM. This person decided to toss common sense out the window.

Flood water is usually moving pretty quickly bros, it’s not so much an issue of depth. That’s how it got to a place it normally isn’t supposed to be in the first place

Opening a car door in fast water can be impossible. Most folks aren't prepared to bust their windshield and climb out. I bet Simon wouldn't mind a hand in said scenario.😅

Fun fact: I was working in customer support for company producing debit cards, and we were disabling cards before caller starts to speak. If correct numbers are dialed, we had a prompt that the call is about stolen or lost cards. So yeah, don’t chase anyone, blocking the card takes 5 seconds

Problem with walking through flood waters to safety is that it’s not like walking through a pool. The water is moving, and often there is a lot of debris in it as well. People needing to be rescued isn’t always them being idiots, though it can’t be ruled out. 😉

I heard about the woman killed by the alligator! And I’m in CT! She was related to my brother’s coworker, and it was a total shock, no one can be prepared to receive that kind of news. Apparently her whole family came in to her the news. May I also say, I promise you Simon that your kids WILL beg for a dog, and you will say yes.

I'll just be the one to say it: Barring extreme circumstances like an attack as a child, anyone who dislikes dogs cannot, and should not, be trust. Period. And let's be honest here, that cat did not save the woman. It was only knocking stuff over to wake her up because it was trying to save itself.

I'm really glad the hero rescuer didn't get charged for running over the alligator since they're supposedly protected. I guess there are exceptions when an ally is feeling murderous.

I want to be offended as a dog owner, but it's just funny. And also true in a lot of cases. Although I have definitely heard stories of dogs heroically saving their owners, so it's definitely not universal.
