My favorite quote of this awesome episode is: 'the wall isn't there to stop you from your dream, the wall is there to see how bad you want it' that one hits hard!

Love that one too, it's probably why I used it for the intro too :)

I really appreciated that he talked about running isnt all about pace and physical improvement, but rather mental and emotional improvement outside of running.

Absolutely, everything is connected and the mental / emotional part is a huge component of our training and racing journey.

In this video, my favorite quote mentioned by coach Jimmy is "You can have it all, but you can't have it all right now." Things are not easily achieve, you have to work for it, plan and put your dedicate on the line.

Instead of knowing what you are capable of, treat this as an adventure, an exploration, and to live the question, and see what quality your life takes when you live the adventure. Thank you, Jimmy and Floris!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾

I think this is the best most information rich video I’ve seen in a long time. As a ‘restart’ runner at the age of 63 (I ran a couple of marathons 35 years ago) I loved the parts about having patience and the glass ceiling. My favourite thought, ‘recovery is a performance enhancer’. Well done.

The snooze button looms large - so true! Also really liked the reflection that “the experience of grinding through the process to get there that translates to everything .”

Amazing interview. I 100% agree with what he said about resting heart rate and using that to determine what kind of training day it should be. Another one I use is this - If I'm dead tired at the end of the day and need to go to bed an hour early, then I probably trained too hard that day (unless it was a hard day). If I don't want to go to bed, I want to stay up on my phone, then I probably didn't train hard enough. There is that sweet spot where it's not that you have to go to bed (you are that tired) but you want to. You look forward to hitting those covers even if it's just to lay there for 20 minutes and enjoy laying there. That's how I judge my days and it's been working very well.

What an awesome interview! My biggest takeaway also served me as a reminder set of things I’ve done in the past. If I want something badly, I need to put in the hard and tedious work in order to reap the benefits and achieve any goal I set my sights on. That wall is very real but it’s only there to prove to you how much you really want something and how much stronger you are than you give yourself credit for

This was awesome! He’s always such a great interview and never holds back. The most important part to me was the recovery portion. Something all of us struggle with, taking a rest day or easy day when things aren’t feeling right. Live to fight another day! 🙌

PS favorite comment was the one about not using a go by comfortable feel during a race. I tried that approach in two races recently and the results weren’t great. A bit too comfortable and too much in the tank at the end.

Best takeaway was hearing that other people also get sick during the taper. That happened to me and it was extremely frustrating. Good to get some advice on how to deal with that.

Yes it's pretty common when we have pushed our bodies in training especially at the end of our peak, into our taper. Glad you found the advice helpful in this episode!

Great stuff as always - “We all have an idea of what the lid is on our peak performance - … - we can project, but if you were to live and train with that as a question mark - instead of “knowing” what you think your capable of, just giving up the idea that you have any idea and saying “Im going to treat this as an adventure”...

My takeaway is actually something I have to push back on. "Going after BIG goals" "You want to pick a goal that is going to take five or more years to achieve." - Tell that to Randy Pausch ... Everything is relative, and five years to someone in their 20s or even 30s or 40s isn't the same as to someone in their 60s or 70s. Yes our goals should be realistic, but at the same time, we only get one life, and "impatience" can also mean "not dilly dallying".
@JimmyDeanFreeman
@JimmyDeanFreeman Жыл бұрын
Life is indeed short, and what else we have going on in our lives has an impact and influence. I hear what you are saying with the "get after it now" mentality. My picking a goal 5-7 years out doesn't mean not (double negative, I know) setting goals for 3-6 months from now, nor 1-2 years from now, but rather stretching ourselves and picking something that is life-altering, and not easily achieved even with urgency and everyday focus. Thanks for the pushback! Always love hearing everyone's perspective on goals, and self-motivation / self-actualization. -JDF

Hi Floris, love your content - from up the coast in Vancouver. It's a little cooler here, but definitely a hardcore running community. Having said that, many of us are triathletes, so we love to mix running and cycling. Running is my staple in the winter and cycling in the summer. Looking forward to a sub 40 minute 10 k (at age 59) sometime in the next 4 months.

Pondering about that 3 week (instead of 2 week) taper before a big race. It's certainly worth trying at least once to see what kind of difference it may make all other things equal.

Hi Mark, you can bring a good amount of water in 2 handheld bottles. Most trail / ultra races have aid stations so you can use handheld bottles if you want. Personally I do like running handsfree, especially when I'm shooting photos or filming, so I bring a running backpack.
