Dear Floris, I'm following you since few time now. I really like your interviews, specially when Dr. Maffetone is on board. Thanks for sharing this thoughts. About the quote: I wrote down to do the power break on race day and to try stay out of start line's music. Also noted about having two phones to keep everything (my own time) in place. In my case the "focus modes" on my phone allow to hide some apps and stops many notifications, but the addiction is always there and many auto-discipline is needed... Again, THANKS for sharing and for adding Phil's music at the end ;-) Keep up with all this healthful spread of information. Regards, Jacob

I just realized I do this while traveling. Put myself into alpha. Makes airport, plane, airport zones totally comfortable. I also used to do this when on trips with my kid's class. Long loud bus trip? I would shut myself down. Literally. Wow. Glad I have this skill.

Music helps me focus on my body, music helps me focus my mind better and music makes my runs more relaxing.

I loved his quote about "a surprise lighting up the brain", it was brilliant. I have definitely always believed music has healing powers because I've experienced it myself. Great video and thanks for the opportunity to win his book!

So interesting! Just ran the Gold Coast Half marathon and ran to a particular beat in my head. I started using this ‘internal metronome’ some time ago for all my major races. The rhythm helps me focus and maintain an even pace throughout. Broke my record from last year by 7 minutes btw! 😊Favourite takeaway ‘The brain runs the show!’

A quick comment here on the MAF method. Recently I felt quite seriously ill and actually still not 100% ok. On the other hand my blood test is picture perfect with no deficiencies, neither hormonal imbalances and very low inflammatory markers. The Maffatone method for this moment is extremely stressful for me and I train like 30 to 50 beats lower than my maf HR. Like a breath controlled flat high speed walk at 90 to 95hr and some tarahumara style jog jolts up to like 105 108hr. No more. This way even if I was out for 2hours covering 15 to 20km, I am fresh and ready for the rest of the day. Getting stronger. If I was running at my 130 to 140 maf or even 15 beats shifted like 115 to 125, it would be fatiguing after 20minutes impacting me for 1 or 2 full days. 10 to 15 hours of weekly training with no fatigue and no negative impact is way more beneficial than 3 to 5hours and foggy brain, sleepiness and not wanting to go again. Phil stresses this a lot. Listen to the body. Slow it down. Make it fun. You got to feel, that you could have done 3 times as much and basically you just want to go again. This is crucial for healing, for base building, for recovery, repair, rehabilitation, brain function. Not just for coming back after a long break. This low zone one perfect form, perfect posture, nose breathing walk jog, relaxing barefoot combo can often double up your weekly training volume. After two years basically you can end up instead of 600 , 1200 total hours trained. In case of music I am the same. Music before and after, but not during.

I used to hike a lot in the Alps being a child, long hikes. I remember indeed singing me songs in the head. I guess I fell in love with endurance there

Really enjoyed this discussion! Think of nothing, emptiness. Concentration requires effort and takes energy. I hope to achieve a state of free flow some day. Kind of like how Floris runs a sub 3 marathon while filming and with little perceived effort.

Great interview, can't wait for the competition I will have to order this book right away. Phil is right about music sharpening the mind and being an enabler of the imagination to the soul. These are great tools to bring into your life and lead you on the journey. Good to hear Phil is into Jung too and will check out the new Paul Simon album. Also that organ solo on Maxwell's silver hammer was one of the first ever on a Moog. Would like to know Phil's thoughts on nose breathing too which I've read is intrical to both oxygen utilisation and meditation.

The interesting take away for me was around the alfa waves mind set. I have only really done this in one race in my entire life but focus more on it now that i am learning better ways to train.

It’s fitting he’s also a musician with his last name. His bands name surely must be “Dr. Phil and The Maffetones” This is great stuff though seriously.

Very good interview with Dr. Phil Maffetone. I actually enjoyed listening to it on the hammock in the garden during sunny afternoon downloading natural vitamin D. I have been a BIG fan of Metallica since 1990 so it's so funny and stunning hearing Dr. Maffetone speaking about his collaboration with Rick Rubin who was a producer for Metallica back in 2008 (If I'm right) when they recorded the Death Magnetic album. I remember James Hatfield speaking about the collaboration between Metallica and Rick Rubin and he spoke about him in the same way as Dr. Maffetone did. I don't like this or that sound, change it but without giving them a specific solution, allowing the band to work it out. And they did, recording hell of an album! Music during training sessions? During the race? Definitely NO! My breath is my music. However, I am in transition now moving from Gran Canaria to the UK (unfortunately) and what I loved before almost each race in Gran Canaria (although it certainly increased my heart rate) was AC DC's Thunderstruck played shortly before the start of the race. Such a powerful kick with a bouncing crowd. Simply AWESOME! 🤟🤟 I will miss that!. On top of it I would like to add that it's been 14 months since I started with a low heart training and the results are overwhelming. I am preparing myself for Trans Gran Canaria 2024 now and I have never been fitter than I am although 45 in ten days time. I feel like 20 to be honest. Although I started mountain running and running in general only 3 years ago, changed my diet, lost 20kg since February 2020 (70kg now), run on a regular basis 80-100km/week and I can't believe the progress. My VO2 max has gone up from approx. 40 to 64! I enjoy life throughout! Floris, thanks for all this because your podcasts helped me a lot so I am very grateful for what you're doing. I can't remember how I found you mate in this hectic world (maybe it was a podcast with Killian Jornet......) but who cares! Well done mate! Good luck in Berlin!!! If I'm able to, I will make my way from the UK to Berlin to support you as I am not really a fan of asphalt running.

My favorite takeaway: Dr Phil is super into music. Lol He has some good thoughts on Low HR training too, but his passion seems to have moved to music at this point.

Hello @FlorisGierman, after watching your interviews I started to research about low intensity training and I don't understand one thing. Knowing that with the time, doing this kind of training I Improve my aerobic capacity, I also understand that I also Improve my aerobic theresold. Doesn't mean this that, if at the beginning, basing myself in the formula 180-age I can not exceed a number o ppm, when I Improve in my training, this formula doesn't also increase?

The formula is a starting point. Eventually you'll be able to feel when you switch from easy breathing to heavy breathing.

Hello, I'm 25 years old and today I tried MAF heart rate trainning for the first time after seeing multiple videos on youtube about that type of trainning. People normal reaction when they try to do MAF trainning is that they need to slow down substantially in order to maintain heart rate on their "sweet spot". I was on the other side of the spectrum, I couldnt reach my heart rate (180-25=155), not even close to that. I ran at a pace 30 seconds faster that I normaly run confortably and my heart race was about 130-140. Is it possible that I have been running to slow all my life? Or my watch isnt that precise when it comes to monitoring heart rate? I have a garmin forerruner 245. I'm doing my first cicle to the marathon so I dont want to try much new stuff, but I was just curious.

After 2 days I went for another run trying MAF trainning, same course just a different day. Now this time I had the same reaction like everyone. I couldnt mantain my normal pace. I needed to slow down like 1 min. My normal pace is 6:40/km and I ran 7:40/km. I dont know why when I tried the first time I couldnt reach 155 bpms running 6:09/km, but now trying the second time I was "relieved" to have the same reaction like everyone else. Any thoughts about my experience?

Radio is becoming like full of junk music, that's why I don't listen to radios and just listen to streams so I can choose my own taste of music that I really like. I also collect records.
