Thank you Floskate for this video. It was wonderful! I can't remember seeing Dorothy skate when she was this young. Quite an impressive performance! You can see her being hard on herself afterwards though despite very good scores. And Carlo Fassi her wonderful coach supporting and encouraging her! Also Dorothy squinting to see her scores because she did not have her glasses on!

Beautiful skater and the most beautiful girl ... Dorothy is every bit as lovely today. Her skating skills are without peer - just her stroking alone, carriage, posture, speed ... she has it in spades xx

The speed, the power, the technique, the grace, the line, the spins, the beauty is ALL there. But, it was oddly buried under her almost mopish hair and that overly draped outfit. She was so good, and only got so much better. Dorothy is still the most popular of them all. Much love to this beautiful woman.

Even after skating, spinning, jumping, her hair fell right back into place! :)

This is absolutely amazing, of course, but it is wonderful to see that her overall skating DID improve noticeably between 1973 and 1976. On a side note, here, with her jumps, spins, stroking to the posture, I thought I was watching Kristiina Wegelius-also a Fassi skater...who, despite her enormous potential and consistently-impressive practice sessions, could not conquer her nerves and never medaled at major competitions.

Back then, skaters were so fluid with their edges and connecting moves. Today's skaters are angular and jerky.

Melissa MILITANO. As a singles skater, Melissa Militano was US Junior Champion in 1971, where she became one of the first female skaters to perform a triple toe loop. But she also skated pairs with her brother Mark. They were second at the US Championships in 1970-72, and won the title in 1973.

Back in the day when the skaters proved their mastery of edges during the compulsory figures, in the free, they could be free to skate beautifully without all the convoluted edges they have to include these days!
@AT-jm4dl2 жыл бұрын
Not every skaters back in the days skated like Dorothy, Janet, and Peggy. They were the exceptions and that was why they became champions and stars. There were plenty of skaters in all eras with crappy edges and crappy skating skills.
@01doha2 жыл бұрын
@@AT-jm4dl I think you are missing the point 😳
@01doha2 жыл бұрын
@@waynehentley4332 the point is that the skaters could show their mastery of edges in the compulsory figures, and not have to cram in all those edge sequences, which I think slows down the flow of the skating.

Was this the world’s where Dorothy broke out in tears right before this free skate because she thought the crowd was booing her? (They were actually booing the scores of the skater who was right before her - Gerti Schanderl, I think?) But she composed herself, and I remember Dick Button saying something to the effect of “Watch this girl. She’s going to do her best.” She finished second - but it was still an amazing performance. Helped her I think to tune out the crowd and made her stronger, into the Olympic champion she eventually became.
@floskate2 жыл бұрын
No it was a year later in Munich in '74. Gerti was from Munich hence the strong reaction of the home crowd. It is on my channel but not teh best quality I'm afraid.
@shimmeringfairydust32752 жыл бұрын
@@floskate oh thank you! I’ll look for Gerti and Dorothy, circa 1974. You are the best, floskate, when it comes to figure skating. I also adored Dorothy’s countrywoman Dianne de Leeuw - U.S. could have gone 1-2 at the 76 Olympics had Dianne competed for the U.S., but I think Dianne’s mum thought she could get better international experience if she competed for the Netherlands. Dianne had both Dutch & US citizenship. That was an awesome rivalry!
@AT-jm4dl2 жыл бұрын
@@shimmeringfairydust3275 If De Leeuw had skated for the U.S. then she would also had to go against the likes of Janey Lynn in 73, Wendy Burge in 74 &75, and Burge and Linda Fratianne in 76. All strong free skaters and with arguably better techniques than De Leeuw. Dianne would've never been the U.S. #1 woman.
