My two cents on the sampler drama: this is our hobby. Make whatever changes you want to make it fun for you!! I put a label on the back of all of my framed pieces. I write the name of the pattern, my name, fabric used, color substitutions, etc.

If I stitch it…I can put my name or initials on it. I did the work…but I would also leave the original name of the stitcher. I also sign all my paintings. I want people to be able to tell my collection of original needlework and the reproductions that I stitched. Thanks for enabling me on pirate robin floss!

Always enjoy your videos, your conversations are so jam packed with interesting observations, tales of woe, love affairs and neighborly gossip LOL. for what it's worth, I have successfully stitched all manner of embroidery (specialty) stitches on aida using a chenille needle. It has a large eye like a tapestry needle but has a sharp point so you can pierce the aida fabric when necessary. Worth some experimenting perhaps. best wishes. xoxo. My choice for reproduction samplers is to stitch the name and date as reproduced but add my initials and current year in the lower corner. My choice for stitching ANY chart (including reproductions samplers) for your personal use is to modify, alter, adapt, use pieces or parts or substitutions as you desire. I'm just trying to avoid using only an historical date.

I loved this “unhinged” episode….. so much fun 😂 For the whole initial/name thing you have to remember that women/girls did this back in the day as school work or “resumes” for potential suitors - we don’t do that anymore….thankfully. But I think that if you took the time to stitch it, you should put your name/initials on it if you want to. I’m not a sampler stitcher but if ever I did one I’d remove the name potion all together and fill with motifs - I don’t put my initials on anything 🤷‍♀️ but that’s just me. You do you….this is your piece and to date I haven’t heard of any ghosts coming back cause they’re mad someone removed their name off the finished piece 👻

Go for the one over one! You will love it so much! And, you are lucky because you’re younger and can probably do it without having to add readers to the process. It opens you to a whole New World that is so, so fun!❤ Tip: easiest to start with a pattern that has no fractional Stitches (only full exes) and no back stitching.

You all just make me smile. You can totally change the name and initials on a sampler. Lori Holt who designs patterns changes names so I figure I can too, so does Blackbird Designs. Personal preference. I love how you fan girl over the “cool kids” , if I could ever meet Katie Strachan or Brenda and Laura I think I would squeal too. Retreat at The Attic or Hobby House to meet the “cool kids”, #goals.

I put my name and the date on my large projects! I think that the alphabet was included on Samplers so that the stitcher could use their own name. I don't believe the designer had intended for their name to be in everyone's home. Just my opinion 🤷

I think this is why I’m not attracted to doing a reproduction sampler at all. I will not put someone’s else’s name on my stitching. also - I run every single piece of floss over a damp sponge to straighten it out before using it. That would solve the spit issue. I just found you girls - I’m enjoying you 3!!!

As a historian, personally I would keep it mainly as is, but add something like "reproduced by - your name- on - date. Buuuuuuut unless you're stitching it for literal heritage purposes, the cross stitcher in me was say, nah, just credit the original tucked away in the ffo somewhere. Also, widow frog looks awesome as is, i think more black would be overkill

I have had Widow Frog in my stash since it first debuted on Patreon. After watching this channel, I want to immediately start that as well as the Modern Folk four seasons piece, which I do NOT have in stash and have resisted purchasing so far, despite already picking out fabric and floss for it. I view name additions as personal choice. In lots of non sampler or reproductions some people put their initials and and as a sort of signature. A lot of those charts include charted alphabets so that you can make it your own. The chart is copying the original stitched piece, who is to say that who ever charted it from the original piece did so 100% correctly, and then whenever a chart is translated by the stitcher the piece is unique. it is your piece, you picked the fabric and threads, you miss a stitch here or carry a thread there. Also I got my degree in Archaeology and we do love trash. they would also use different methods to date the fabric and threads not just the date stitched. Also look in project cards, they are stickers or cards that you can attach to the back of frames where you can list all details about the chart. If you want to really get into the weeds with samplers, most of the time they are charted using very muted colors because that is what we see, but if the patterns are removed from their frames the colors are much brighter on threads that have been covered (because the sun and light didn't 'bleach' the threads inside the frame). So what is the true reproduction, the dull muted colors we see or what they truly stitched with. Not only is a 10 year old girl most likely a thread licker (Proud thread licker here) but she most likely loved bright colors.

Just call it an adaptation and change it however you like! I did hear someone talking once about how our “reproductions” aren’t really reproductions because we aren’t using the exact same materials, anyway. I just love Pirate Robin’s cotton floss. Her colors are so rich! I haven’t tried her silks yet… someday.
