Dial back in time to app. 1993ish…i made a carolina lily wallhanging (quiltmaker here!) to commemorate a younger brother’s wedding. I used a rust-colored moiré taffeta for the nosegay portion of the carolina lily. Background was simply muslin. For whatever reason, I had to wash it before I quilted it. Let me tell you about that moiré taffeta! RUST COLORED, no less, was ALL OVER THAT MUSLIN. So I washed it again…and again…and again…. (Yes, I’m a LITTLE hard headed!). SO…I gave up trying to get rid of the rust (which actually WOULD disappear temporarily, but would reappear in a different spot) and I ended up taking a piece of the taffeta, wetting it and PURPOSELY ironing it in select places on the muslin. IT LOOKED GREAT! Looked old fashioned, aged, so to speak. If I were you, I would do either a full dye with the wine, or just splash it in places!

Happy New Year from Ohio. The best way to remove red wine is to soak it in white wine! No kidding. Hubby spilt an entire glass of red wine on my best friends white fleece vest. I soaked it in straight white wine with a dye catcher the next morning I rinse the white wine out with water and it all came out.

I'm 99% sure they are the called for threads. My fabric is a bit darker so that might look different on your end

I don't know about how long you can wash pre gridded cross stitch fabric. I do know I have read you need to wash it pretty warm and long to get it out. Not just a 10 minute soak.... Can't you cut off a sliver of a side and try before you go back to stitching it?

What size needle do you use when you stitch on one ?

It depends. Right now I'm stitching a piece over 1 on 28 count Lugana. The holes seem so big, I feel like I could drive a car through them. I'm using 28 but I could probably use a 24 or 26. When I stitch over 1 on a high count linen. I use a size 28 tapestry or a beading needle #10
