Flower of Scotland Bagpipes
Flower of Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Flùr na h-Alba, Scots: Flouer o Scotland) is a Scottish song, used frequently at special occasions and sporting events. Although there is no official national anthem of Scotland, Flower of Scotland is one of a number of songs which unofficially fulfil this role, along with the older Scots Wha Hae, Scotland the Brave and the more recent Highland Cathedral. It was written by Roy Williamson of the folk group The Corries, and presented in 1967, and refers to the victory of the Scots, led by Robert the Bruce, over England's Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
The song has been used as a National Anthem by the Scotland national rugby union team, ever since the winger, Billy Steele, encouraged his team-mates to sing it on the victorious Lions tour of South Africa in 1974. The song was adopted as the pre-game anthem during the deciding match of the 1990 Five Nations Championship between Scotland and England, which Scotland won 13--7 to win the Grand Slam. The Scottish Football Association adopted "Flower of Scotland" as its pre-game national anthem in 1997 although it was first used by them in 1993. Usually only the first and third verses are sung.
The song was used as the victory anthem of Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 replacing Scotland the Brave.
The tune was originally composed on the Northumbrian smallpipes,[citation needed] which play in D and have the benefit of keys on the chanter to achieve a greater range of notes.
Ewan McGregor performed the song in Magadan in 2004 for the filming of the TV show Long Way Round.
In July 2006, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted an online poll (publicised by Reporting Scotland) in which voters could choose a national anthem from one of five candidates. 10,000 people took part in the poll in which Flower of Scotland came out the winner.

I was in Rome 2022 watching Scotland v Italia, Scotland won but being in Roma and with the Italians was a wonderful experience. The Italian team are coming on leaps and bounds and I wish you all success in the future. I'm sure the Azzuri will be a major force in Rugby soon, their commitment is already world class.

I am an American whose family has been here since 1702. Traced back to an interpreter for the English Army, a Scotsman by the name of John Watts, I have fought for the United States in three Wars. The Gulf War as a teenager, Iraq and once in Afghanistan. My beloved Father fought in Vietnam. I was never more embarrassed than when my father passed and two soldiers showed up at my father's funeral with a "boom box" expecting to do military burial rites for this combat veteran. This was back in 2013. My family, my brother being a serving FBI At the time, politely asked the two soldiers to step aside as our local Scottish Bagpipe

I have a similar history and a similar story. After more than 300 years, we still consider ourselves Scots and don't like to have our traditions messed with. My Dad says the bagpipes were originally an instrument of war designed to scare the crap out of the Anglish. Didn't work for long. Don't know if that's true, but it's a great tale.
@UselessShows21
@UselessShows21 6 жыл бұрын
Your father is correct! Although the bagpipes were not specifically designed for war, a Scottish army during the Wars of Idependance would not fight without one. The idea of the bagpipes being a weapon can be traced back to the battle of Culloden, where a piper known as James Reid was captured and was put on trial for high treason. The piper claimed innocence as he simply played a musical instrument. From that day forward the bagpipes were considered a weapon of war until 1996.

RyanHD People argue because, statements like "Freedom for Scotland", are, I'm afraid to say, stupid. They are intended to annoy and instigate those in favour of the Union. Braveheart is a great film, but this is reality, Scotland is already free as a nation and enjoys the massive benefits of being within the United Kingdom.
