Flowers I’m sowing for beds, baskets and containers in March

We're cracking open the seed box to have a look at the flowers I'm growing from seed to fill my flower beds and borders with colour. Let's take a look at the garden and talk about what I'm sowing and where I intend to plant those flowers.
We've got lots of easy flowers to grow from seed, a couple of grow-along projects for you to join and I'll tell you about some brand new flowers I'm trying this year for hanging baskets, planters, containers, flower beds and who knows, maybe even a wee bit of colour in my greenhouse.

I’ve never really grown flowers - as my garden is like a jungle and needs sorting out. So I stick to my allotment. However last year, I vowed I’d make something of my garden and bought loads of seeds from Wilkos when they were discounted. Went mad but I’m now overwhelmed with it all. I also wanted to give away flower plants to people .. whether that will happen I don’t know? But your video has given a lift, so thank you. I will definitely be joining you when you start sowing. And who knows I may have a garden and an allotment bed, that will show off my little babies 🤞 Thanks again 😊

Petunias! #smackshead I knew I'd forgotten something. Oh well, an excuse to buy more seeds. As if I needed one! I only usually do one basket. I'm in a wind tunnel here on the south coast and really worry about adding any extra weight to my fence pannels. My first flower from seed was a viola winter variety and it has been a favourite ever since. Funnily enough, I wasn't a fan of pansies and violas, until I grew them myself. I'm going to join in the grow-alongs, although with slightly different varieties, just for the fun. I can't wait. SOOOOOO exciting!

Hurrah for grow alongs!! My top secret tip for the vertical planter on the fence... It's not actually on the fence so to speak. :D. We are the same, we have incredible winds which is why we don't have a lot of trees, the wind just burns them :( Hence, we only have dwarf trees. Those two pallets that make the planter are their own structure, secured to the ground to take their own weight and then just attached to the fence for stability, but notices neither the fence nor the planter are covered, both have huge gaps to allow the wind through :D That stops the fence being blown over.

@@eliandkate That's good to know - I have had to do similar things and we have had to use breeze blocks to secure the kids play things. But your hanging baskets, I believe, are secured to your fence? Are they not a swinging nuisance and danger to your fence? Mine can be quite heavy when watered...

Ohhhh god, Cherry Blossom, we have one in our front garden, it must be 60ft tall, when it looses its blossom, it looks like its snowed pink snow, the car's usually take the brunt of it! I'd love to get it taken out, but It's a guide point sending anyone to our house haaa haa, Last year I did some experimenting with sunflowers, I nipped them out, found that they didnt grow as tall, but they had a continuous supply giving multiple heads. I had some amazing red ones down on the allotment 🙂My dahlia's have sat in a basket in a box in the conservatory, I'm sure I may have one or 2 spare Cafe au lait tubers if you want them, I've not got the space for as many since I gave up the 2nd plot! They give AMAZING flowers!! Nip out the Zinnias once they are 3 or 4 inches, they will throw up more flowers 😊😊

I grew dahlias from tubers last yr and saved the tubers to replant bc I nvr considered trying to grow them from seed. The tubers were Incredibly FUSSY in the ground here in Tx, zone 8a so I dug them up and put them in containers, and they were spectacular after that. Was debating trying them in the ground again this yr as I worked all during last fall and winter to improve the soil in the area I want them in. Now I may decide to also try the seeds to see what does better here in the ground. I winter sowed some poppies two weeks ago and started some salvia indoors bc our last frost date is March 27th. Have germination on the salvia, but not the poppies as of yet! Can’t wait to see all ur flowers! 😍🥰

That work on the soil will pay off in spades. Dahlias can be a bit fussy. We have clay soil here so they don’t do well without a lot of soil improving. They really don’t like to sit in the wet

Nice to know about dahlias as I’m trying for first time. What a bummer your tubers got ruined😮. Yesterday I was cleaning and we hadn’t been checking the storage onions and a few were going south a few wanted to be planted😊. I’m going to try and plant a few of each variety to save seed. You manage to get quite a nice variety in your garden. Can’t wait to see in bloom. It’s hopeful spring is coming seeing spring bulbs. We are still having crazy swings. Extremely warm for most of January with rain, then we’ll below hard freezing at the end of January and beginning of February - now back to a week of rain and we’ll above freezing. It makes it difficult to decide when to start winter sowing as they would prematurely germinate and be shot. I hope the weather straightens out soon as I have big new to me flower plans and need to succeed. I started February 27th last year with great success in Z5a WIsconsin, US.

Oh we’re not in spring yet, just that our temps will be slightly warmer than yours and they’ve had a long time to grow roots and get ready. Different bulbs will flower at different point so feb we might see flowers from crocuses and snow drops, late feb to early March the little daffodils and then late March through April the different tulips will start flowering. We make sure all our bulbs are in the ground by late November each year.

It will be wonderful to see. I am not able to grow flowers from seed this year, just no space or time. I will just be doing veg and I will cheat and buy plants. I wish I could grow some of those lovelies too. Ideas for next year!

Really enjoyed the garden tour Eli. You're sowing a lot of the same seeds as me! I'm even trying delphiniums this year. Had a lot of success with them when we lived down south, but its so windy here I hope they dont snap off. I'm not up to full speed just yet as I broke my toe 12 days ago, so doing a bit of hobbling! Great garden tour! :) I liked how each area is treated individually: why and how, with flashback photos, as well as your plans showing what you are going to sow. Not being into flowers, i appreciated seeing the seed packets, it helped tremendously visualing what you are trying to achieve. Great also to know in advance what you are going to go through with us as I am so intimidated to try flowers because I don't know how and having plenty of time now, I shall try to replicate your methods on my blank canvas. Yes defo You don’t want all that moisture on your little seedlings. I always says take the lids if completely once the seeds have germinated. You can always put them back on if you are getting a cold spell but generally I keep them off

Purple Bell vine was a germination fail for me last year but this year I'm going to chit in a sandwich bag with a damp paper towel before I put into soil 🤞🏻. I loved this update and can't wait to see your 2023 garden in full bloom each season.

Eli, your description of crocosmias completely altered my previous perspective on them. I used to dislike them because they spread too rapidly, like mints. Over the years, I have given away most of them. However, I still have a few left in a container. I actually prefer gladiolas to crocosmias. Suddenly, a new idea came to mind on how I could utilise crocosmias in the garden - I could use them as mulch after they have finished flowering. This solution offers the benefits of both a decorative plant and a useful mulch. I have been searching for plants with dual purposes and I didn't realise the solution was right under my nose. Plus, croscomia doesn’t mind crappy soil. Thanks for the inspiration. I do love your choice of flowering plants this year. The Zinnias and cosmos are indeed irresistible. They are also incredibly easy to grow and care for, making them the perfect choice. I have a keen interest in growing dahlias from seeds. I attempted it last year, but unfortunately, they did not germinate. I am eager to give it another try until I am successful. I have also grown petunias before and I love them. I suspect that their growth was merely a happy accident. LOL

I was exactly the same Mary, it was gladioli that got my attention originally but somewhere along the line I fell out of love with them. I actually (tried) to dig up all the bulbs. Although we still get rogues appearing… can’t seem to get rid of them

Our garden is pretty much north face, just a teensy bit of kilter to the east, but pretty much north 😂😂😂 That’s why we have so much fade, so basically our patio is in shade most of the day because it’s shaded by the house, that agfects the fence bed until just passed the camellia and all the planters in the sitooterie

I have almost all the seeds you have, except different varieties. Some of mine were quite successful, some not so much. Big surprise for me was the strawflowers I planted last year and thought had died, just came up (noticed them the other day). I LOVED my beautiful zinnia last year. I'll definitely be growing that again this year. And I bought more marigold - that'll be one of my very favourite flowers and the bees love them! I am determined to grow gazania - I've tried two years running. I LOVE you've dedicated a video to your flowers. Thanks for doing this! 😊

I've never cold stratified my delphinium, always had 90%+ germination rate, and they do great in the garden.

@@eliandkate I also store my seeds in the refrigerator. I've always understood cold stratification to require the cool temperature as well as the moisture in the potting medium. But, maybe it's just the cool temperature that's needed and I actually AM cold stratifying my seeds.

I mainly grow veggies. But two years ago I added some flowers, mainly to attract pollinators to my melons. I also have a 5x8 converted weed patch that has 5 roses in it. My wife loves the flowers, so I have been adding to them. Zinnias are fantastic. I also have asters, cosmos, marigolds, and shasta daisy's. This year I am adding petunias, and Zebrina Malva. Most are in containers. Most are annuals, but I take 2 perennials inside to overwinter in my seed starting room. Good luck with the flowers, the video's should be interesting.

Flowers have always been a massive part of what we do, I think that’s the biggest difference between us and a lot of the other channels I watch, we are actually keeping a garden, it’s not all about growing food, that was just a fun aside that I got a notion for. We actually tend to flower beds, hanging baskets, lawns, shrubberies, a rockery. paths, fences etc etc It’s about the whole space and the fact it’s part of our home 😀 The growing food thing is a very small part of our hobby 😍

While flowers are not my main focus, its an area of gardening I need to improve in. Gardening for me is a learning experience, Im only going into my 5th year. Gleaning info from multiple sources is a good way to learn and improve.

Great video & still busy catching up as a new subscriber. I grew Dahlia, Zinnia, Calendula, Wallflowers and Sunflowers last year. Doing the same this year but would love to have a go at some hanging basket flowers. Anything to save a few pennies on buying plug plants. Will be watching the petunia video, what else are pretty safe to grow for baskets? Lobelia was a bit of a faff 😂

I love growing lots of flowers from seed. I do it every year. If you like the delphiniums, also try Larkspur. Very similar looking flowers but I think it has nicer foliage. I know you love your spring flowers too. Another stunning one to try is runanculus. I start mine in late October and over winter them in the greenhouse. They can be a bit fussy, but if you can grow them, you won't be disappointed. I look forward to the petunia grow along as I just never have any luck with them for some reason.

It's looking lovely Eli. I grew dwarf sunflowers this year, they are multiheaded (they are just starting to put on their extra blooms now)... but I do like the height of the more traditional sunflowers and in future I might try growing both, mixed together. I think I do have some standard sunflowers starting to come along though from left over seeds I just scattered in my front flower bed so I might end up with both anyway.

Oh I love dwarf sunflowers, I did them as a grow along a couple of years ago. My favourites were little leo :D

Suggest to move the non flowering bush to a sunny spot and see if you get blooms. A Hydrangea would do well there and would flower all summer. What about a new flower bed directly in the middle of the garden to add interest and more growing space?

Greenery!!! So envious. We’re having a melt but that’ll change! ☹️. I planted some dwarf irises to go with my crocus plants. They were about 6” high and most of that was flower head. Very odd looking little thing! Looking forward to getting some crocosmia! Love them.

@@eliandkate - I have the tall purple bearded irises all over and while I like them they don’t last long. I’m on a mission to replace them with other perennials. The teeny ones were sweet but not a big splash of colour! Lol!

I grow a lot of my flowers from seeds. It is very easy to do. Also,my mother had an azalea bush that was absolutely glorious and then the next year it died. I was wondering if it just out did itself. Maybe! Thank you for sharing your wonderful garden!

If it is a young camelia it might just not be old enough to bloom yet. Camelia's (especially japonica varieties) don't need much sun at all. Granted that being in USDA zone 9b means plants grow different for me but my camelias are on the north side of my house under the eaves & are in full deep shade most of the year, they bloom beautifully every year & the first bloom just opened this week. Zinnias are wonderful. Queen Lime Blush is my favorite zinnia. They bloom right up until first frost for us.

Petunias are my favourite flower too. I’m having a go at growing them from seed, but I did also buy some plug plants. I have a trellis wall with hanging flower pots that I really want to do something with this year. But I need to ask a question: your two triple hanging pots on yours trellis, do you put flower pots in them or do you just fill them with compost and grow flowers directly into them? TIA 😊

Love your videos and your garden and greenhouse. I was taught that your seeds need to stay in a dry container and kept in a cool dark space. Your seed box is plastic and see through and you keep it in the greenhouse. Just curious.

Yup cool, dry and dark (or not bright st least) The box is water resistant as it seals tick also it’s not completely clear, so blocks a fair amount of light and all the seeds are in the packets so no light and the greenhouse isn’t heated so plenty cool 😃

I did both cold stratification and standard sowing. Only a few of the standard sowing came up, but to be honest, have come to nothing. So won't be having delphinium this year😂

I did indeed, I grew a few varieties of dwarf sunflowers over the last few years
