A short story for this lovely piece/animation! :3 A black-haired boy moved into a small village in the countryside for his summer break one day. It was due to his mother's low health and need for recovery before her surgery. He was used to the bustling life of big cities, unlike this laid-back place. Although he came for his mother's sake, he still did not really appreciate this place nor held high hopes to enjoy his stay in it. It was too quiet and boring from what he was used to. This remote place was way too calm to his liking and he could not exactly befriend anyone since he is quite shy. Not like there are many kids his age anyway, it was mostly filled with elderly people. He spent most of his time exploring, reading, writing, drawing, or playing with his keyboard. One day, holding onto his sketchbook, he went to explore the forest beside the village. He heard from the granny next door about a legend of a tree spirit that lives deep within it which made him want to see for himself if it really exists. As he went deeper into the woods, he got mesmerized by the view and the different plant life that habited this forest. He had never seen these types of plants before and lost count of the time he spent sketching different flowers and sceneries. It was a long while later when he realized it was about time he headed back home, but he was troubled to find that he had gotten lost. As he worried about what to do, he heard a soft humming voice of a girl from behind a huge tree that was further ahead. Intrigued, he followed it and found a small open space beside the tree with big white flowers he didn't recognize. There, he saw a cute girl wearing a short pink dress. She had pretty long blonde hair and deep blue eyes. She was sitting by the riverbed humming a lovely tune. "Hey." He called out to her not knowing where the surge of confidence came from. He was never one to start a conversation after all. "..." As she turned her head around, her eyes widened for a second before it turned to regard him with weariness and bemusement. "Um..." He awkwardly looked away from her for a second before bringing his gaze back. "Are you... talking to me?" She asked with doubt on her face. "Well, there's only you around, so yeah?" He said feeling awkward and thought that she was quite weird. "Oh... oh! You can see me!" She clasped both of her hands together and looked astonished with wonder which made him even more confused by her behavior. "Huh?" He gave her a once-over until he noticed that she wasn't quite normal. She wasn't exactly 'human' as her legs or more specifically her cnemes were made out of tree trunks and roots. "...Are you perhaps a tree spirit?" It was his turn this time to look astonished. The blonde shrugged, "Something like that. Do you draw?" She smiled and pointed at his sketchbook. "Huh? Oh... yes." "Can I see it?" Her smile widening. "Sure." Once again, he didn't know how he could get this confident since he's usually reluctant to let anyone see his works except for his mother and grandmother. After flipping a few pages in his sketchbook she exclaimed, "These drawings are so lovely!" "Thanks..." He bashfully said. "By the way, are you not scared of me?" He chuckled, "I was a bit startled at first but no, you seem like a kind spirit." This made her give him a warm smile. After talking for a while, it was almost dusk, so the girl gave him directions out of the forest. He promised to come back the next day and the day after, he'd do the same. They have been spending time together ever since then for three months of the summer season. Conversing, playing, drawing, reading, writing but most of all singing together with the frogs or other magical animals in this forest. Every day was so enjoyable he would practically gleam from the fun. "Are there others like you?" He asked one day. "I don't know... but I don't think so. I've only ever seen myself in here with my animal friends." Stilling a bit, he asked more quietly, "Don't you ever feel lonely?" "I do but there's nothing I can do about it. It's not like I can leave this forest and nobody except you can see me. Ah, but I haven't felt lonely at all since we've met, so I'm really grateful about it!" She exclaimed cheerfully. "...I'm glad. I also feel really happy spending time with you like this." He smiled warmly as he continued sketching. "You'll come tomorrow won't you?" "Of course." "And the day after, the week after, and even the month after that!" She excitedly added. "That... I'm afraid I can't do that." "What? ...Why?" She frowned. "I need to move back to my home in the city after two weeks. I have to attend school." "Oh..." She looked down. "Hey, don't be so sad, I'll come back next summer." He tried to cheer her up but she only gave a weak smile. After that, days were spent awkwardly and mostly with silence until finally when it was the last week, he didn't find her by the tree anymore. She never showed up no matter how much he called out to her or waited. When the last day came up, he went to their usual place by the tree and set down a small wrapped box. Waiting by the tree and playing with the keyboard alone once again, he stood up and looked around one last time before resolving himself to finally leave and head back out of the forest. As he walked away, a shadow from behind the tree appeared and looked at him longingly. The girl stared at the wrapped gift, and although she felt happy by the present, she was still very heartbroken and sad about the thought of him leaving. (It was for the best. That way both of us won't grow closer nor would we have to leave each other again since I'll end this friendship.) She sullenly thought. She was telling herself to give up and let go when she heard a faint cry. When she looked at the boy, she saw that he had tripped from a branch on the ground and twisted his ankle. He tried to get up but couldn't help but grit his teeth from the pain and stay still. Gasping and not giving the situation a second thought, she hurried over to him and asked worriedly if he was alright. He gave a bright relieved smile when he saw her. "I thought you didn't want to see me anymore." Then mumbled, "I thought that maybe you hate me." It was heard anyway as she shouted, "No!" She blushed and crouched down. "...I would never hate you. I'm sorry for not showing up and making you wait for me all these days. I just... I was hurting and couldn't accept the thought of separating." She hid her face between her knees. "So you were nearby after all. I was hoping you were listening to me play." He said. She looked up at him, "I was. I always was listening to you play. It calms me down and fills me with a happy feeling... here." She smiled bashfully with a wry smile as she extended her hand and placed something on top of his palm. He looked to find a small flower-shaped keychain carved from wood. He thanked her and gave the brightest smile she ever saw on his face, making her heart tingle as she felt flattered. Seeing as he was happy she looked around and broke a thin tree branch from a nearby tree and handed it over to him to use as a cane. She then helped him up and walked him near the entrance to the forest where they bid each other an 'until next time' which was going to be their next summer. After they separated, she went back to the tree and opened the wrapped gift box to find a sketch of her smiling while sitting by the tree and soaking her branches in the water. There was her favorite book which she liked to read whenever he came over and lent it to her, and there was also a cute heart locket with her name written on it. With a faint smile and a warm feeling inside, she wore the locket. She would always keep it on ever since that day. A few years passed by and the boy would visit the forest every chance he got to accompany the girl until he finally grew quite old with age. He didn't get married and bought a small house in that countryside-a year after he graduated from college. Working as an author, he made quite a name for himself with his talent. Sometimes, when people walked by the forest, they would hear a gentle humming and a soft tune of a keyboard carried out by the breeze. It felt ethereal. Hope you enjoyed reading this! ^^

My theory is that she really isn’t a ghost but she’s emotionally detached. This guy is in the dark, representing him being gloomy. He’s depressed and looks at this girl in the light. She seems to be so happy and energetic all the time. He falls in love with her bright personality but she fails to see the signs or feel the same way. The guy feels as though he’s in love with a ghost because she seems so distant. But that’s just one of the many theories I’ve thought of.

My theory: The girl is the ghost, and she probably somehow died at the pond. I heard somewhere that ghosts aren't able to go to far from where they died, so the roots are there to prevent the girl from leaving. The boy, (maybe a friend of hers,) brought the piano to help cheer her up, and fell in love with her.
