2 MAJOR mistakes Pico made. 1. Skipped NCAA wrestling - terrible decision, that would have given him much more time to grow into a man before making the jump to international/MMA. 2. Retired from freestyle wrestling WAY too young and chased MMA. Another terrible decision. As great as he is, he wasn’t ready yet. He left soooo much wrestling greatness on the table that would have prepared and propelled him to new heights in MMA if that’s what he wanted. Maybe the most talented American wrestler ever. But it was wasted

I dont know man, I think he was doing just fine, multi JR world medalist, few americans have done that, plus he was beating the top guys in the country already, he just chose mma over wrestling which made me sad, I loved watching him hand fight

@@chrislaverick6413 that’s my point brother, we’ve never seen someone who was so young be so competitive and even victorious over numerous NCAA champions and even some world medalists. He’s only 26 right now, if he would’ve kept wrestling he for sure would’ve been our starter and I believe could win a world senior gold medal. And also his start in MMA would’ve been much more successful IMO. Similar to Bo Nickal. Obviously this is just me picking hairs, he’s still a tremendous fighter and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being an MMA world champion.

He's not too old or something to fix it. He can improve but it will take more time than if he just continued wrestling I agree. To also be fair, there is definitely a financial element probably at play with this too. At that time there were no NIL deals and if you don't become an Olympic or world champ, you end up coaching. Schools paying you to come wrestle were not options, brand deals and sponsorships were rare even after college and if you weren't an Olympic gold medalist, the WWE isn't going to call. Even if he wanted to wrestle longer and knew it was better for fight development, there is no money. To grind another 5-10 years, to then give his all and best years to a sport where he is not rewarded is actually a bigger risk than to not fight. Hopefully this changes but I can understand why he did make that decision

@@moments4120 that’s because Taylor was trying to make 74kg and the US had multiple incredible champions at that weight. When DT moved up, he became the ultimate champion at 86kg and has beaten Yazdani 4x

Pico was definitely a beast wrestler. He won a California state wrestling championship wrestling for St. John Bosco with the Valencia brothers. Pico even beat Zain Rutherford who became an NCAA champion and team USA member.

Totally agree pico left way too early, I think he could have gone undefeated in college, he was beating ncaa champs and he was only in high school, I honestly think he was bored, him going undefeated and accolades galore wasn’t important for him, that would be like the great Kobe Bryant going to college for 4 years that would have been a huge waste of time, the only bad thing is your time is severely limited in mma because you’re body takes such a huge beating and that’s not even mentioning the training to get there, and unfortunately as great as he was we will never know his true potential because he stopped wrestling

Hasan is the GOAT. If David taylor actually lost weight and competed faily at 86 he would've lost every match against yazdani. Instead he loses water weight, and comes in around 95kg on the day of the match to face yazdani

@Coleo432 That's cheating. So he's not really 86kg. I'm saying it's unfair because Iranian wrestlers don't do this nonsense. Yazdani is actually 86kg. Watch their matches, taylor looks significantly bigger

@@smaswqa4208 😂 I’m from Dagestan, yes Americans tend to cut weight more than the Soviets in general but 90% of wrestlers cut some sort weight to make it into their weight division, to say otherwise you’re either delusional or ignorant. Have ever been back stage at tournament? But one thing is for sure it’s definitely not cheating as everyone can do it if they wish! But you are free to believe what you want, but that does not make it true!
