My father had a lot of respect for Ingo. He was a great fighter.The 3 epic battles between them were well fought and remembered.They became real good friends after these fights and would visit each other often. I applaud Ingo and my Dad for their achievements, and also for exemplifying the importance of what happens outside the ring as equal to inside the ring - Floyd Patterson, II

Floyd Patterson II I was a kid in elementary school, the third grade to be exact when your dad fought Jimmy Ellis. Your dad should have been a 3 time champion. He killed Ellis that whole fight. And I really mean killed him. Which would have put him line for Joe Frazier in his prime which would have been no easy task but it is the heavyweight division.

I met your Dad in the early 1970s, I was a cop and he had his pistol permit in my precinct, i was proud to shake his hand. I can’t tell you what a great man and great fighter. I listened to the first two fights on transistor radio and the last on TV. Your Dad had such a disadvantage fighting so light and small, he made up for it with speed and heart, for him to be a World Champ is truly one of boxing’s great achievements!

I was a huge Floyd Patterson fan. I saw the first fight on teleprompter in Houston. I was devastated when Floyd lost his title but pleased when he won it back in the 2nd fight. He was a great fighter and could have reigned as a light heavyweight champion for many years. The money and prestige were in the heavyweight division though. Floyd was really too small to fight there but did and held his own for awhile. RIP Floyd. You were a terrific human being and a credit to your sport.

It just wasn't your typical KO. He was hit behind the ear which is an equilibium shot. He seemed fully conscious but dizzy as hell trying to get up.

Floyd was much more aggressive and spirited in this third fight. He still didn't want to meet Ingo's right hand, and Ingo was wary of Floyd's left hook which sent him to Lalaland in the 2nd fight.

To think that during this trilogy between Patterson and Johansson, Sonny Liston was biding his time just waiting for his chance.

Patterson still champ until he fought the top boxers of the time Liston and Ali. those two fighters were legends and controlled the heavyweights. it was like Quarry (who came close to a title) who had good fights against Patterson but could not get past Ali or Frazier either. Boxers like Patterson and Quarry came up at the wrong time unfortunately.

He came up just as the heavyweight division was getting bigger. A few years before he became champ, there were a bunch of light-heavyweights who jumped up into the heavyweight class like Moore and Charles. Back then, it seemed like speed and stamina were valued over size. Very common to see a contender heavyweight bout with guys between 185-195 in the early-mid1950's. Floyd deserves a lot of credit for being a legitimate threat against guys with pretty big size advantages.

In the 6th round Ingo felt that Floyd was getting tired, but he pushed his luck a little bit too far by boxing more upright than he should and that was why Floyd managed to hit him rather hard with his leaping left hook. Had Ingo just gone on keeping o low style and clinching as much as he could, he would have had a chance to win by points. My impression is that neither of them had any of their best days, but of course Floyd deserved this win. RIP Floyd & Ingo

In this fight Ingo was down twice, the first time you couldn't count really, the second time he was punched to the floor but could clearly get up to take the count when the referee with his back to Ingo said no more. Why was the referee so eager to stop this fight but not fight one? In fight one the referee gave Floyd I chance after chance to stand up after Ingo sent him to the floor at >5 times. Floyd didn´t even know where he was at a time. So why? It´s obvious, Ingo must not win again.

Great fucking fight. Even though Floyd was the better boxer you could really see Ingemars improvement from their first fights. Much more combinations and dynamic work. And even though Floyd was outboxing him for most of the match it's one of those cases where Ingemar only needs a single good hit to turn it around and win. Also gotta love the fact that Floyd immediately goes for a hug with Ingemar when the match is over. Great dude.

@@dcasey77 Marciano chose to retire avoiding to fight Floyd. It's a known fact. It was a wise judgement. Marciano wouldn't been respected as highly as if he had retired as 49-1 instead of the 49-0 record. The winner of Patterson vs Tommy Jackson was supposed to fight Marciano for the title. Jackson was Marciano's main sparring partner who got let go by the camp because Jackson was getting too much for Marciano. Floyd beat him in Jackson's fight to prove his strength asides from his skill and the punching power. Marciano didn't want no part of him. Rocky was gonna come back to fight Johansson,but he decided to stay retired after seeing Floyd beat him in the rematch.

@Cableguy15
@Cableguy15 Жыл бұрын
@@himawalincat9350 Pretty much everything you wrote was false. Cus D'Amato, Floyd's trainer, admitted that he didn't want Patterson facing Marciano and that's why he went heavyweight after his retirement. Rocky was also getting fleeced by his manager and was beginning to have back problems while training, so he wasn't feeling good about his career moving forward. That spurred on his retirement. And to be clear, Floyd had the heart of a lion. I bet he'd have loved to have faced Rocky. It was Cus who didn't want it to happen. Rocky stated in an interview that he'd be interested in fighting Johansson to "bring the title back to America". In a later interview, he said that he had trained for about a month, but wasn't feeling it. Floyd hadn't won the rematch by that point, so it had nothing to do with him. Marciano didn't feel as strong or as enduring as before. His match with Joe Louis really impacted how he looked at things. He didn't want to come back past his prime and get beaten. And in 1959, after not having boxed in four years, it was probably a wise decision to leave the gloves off. For what it's worth, I think they would have had a great fight. Floyd beat one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of all-time, Archie Moore, quicker than Marciano did. He'd have also been Rocky's fastest opponent. The way I picture it going is that Patterson is winning on points, but gets hit with that bomb in the later rounds. He always struggled against the hardest hitters, so he'd need to have a damn-near perfect match to win it. Just for the simple fact that I can't picture him KO'ing a man who'd never been KO'd and had only ever been knocked down twice in 49 fights. Whatever would have happened, I don't think it would have been quick or a beat-down in either man's favor.

yeah i was wondering the same thing but for the opposite reasons maybe in the first fight they did'nt mind seeing a African American getting beat down and embarrassing his-self but do you think that they would have wanted to be embarrassed after they found out that Ingo was'nt going to win again so they stopped it quick to save him and them from embarrassment. Back in those days it was'nt hard to see things like that but you can look at it both ways any man will go down if you knock his equilibrium off but that's not a knock out.
