Back in 1996 I was there before many people knew about it. Next to Carrie Mcateers grave, there was another grave in the ground which I believe was Carries child. Born and died a few days apart. It’s born date was the day Carrie died. Interesting how they tell stories.

I've found Herty cup fragments on my property in FL. Never knew exactly what they were, just that they were old by the depth at which I found them.

Really love the pictures of maps & the old town photos. You can get a better vision of what it was like then and now what has become of it. Thank you for the morning hike 🖐️

Great Florida history lesson. Amazing how once the people move on, the forest takes it all back.

Maytown also disappeared about the same time cassadaga built their hotel. Also maytown was on deep Creek that was used to move lumber to the St. John's River but it dried out and was bypassed by the narrow gauge railroad

Cool ghost town. this time of year the townsfolk would've been mighty thirsty.

Are there Jeep trails to get out to this area or any of the other ghost towns.

Did a lot of those small towns abandoned because of things like flu or sickness or industry jobs? maybe both?
@FLtrailblazer7 жыл бұрын
Yea for the most part a mix of both, many towns like this one depended on industries in the area. The was a great freeze of 1894-95 that wiped out many orange groves and other crops which was one reason this town may have declined. Also influenza was responsible and other diseases that couldn't be treated so you see many infant graves in these cemeteries. I learned that many people back then didn't even name their child until they survived past the age of two. Not sure on that though...
