I've read about, watched videos about ships, all the different types of huge carriers and tugboats, in my 73 years on this planet, this is the first time I've heard tugboats referred to as "Sheepdogs Of The Ocean's Harbors", I nearly spit out my coffee when I heard the lady say that. 😀 51 Years ago when i was 10 i used my 4 hp johnson and 16 feet boat to keep a 78 feet fishing boat that had gottten their nets in the propellar out of the rocks at shore 2 hours until larger boats came and took over. It was just a breeze blowing towards shore, but i guess that + the nets still dragging under the boat stopd my 4 hp from manage to tow the 78 feeet boat to safe harbour. hehe But i still got many thanks + around 200 dollar which was a fortune for me in 1971.

It is impressive the power they pack relative to their size, but relative to other ships it's nothing.
@edwardtye4119
@edwardtye4119 Жыл бұрын
Also, relative to other boats, like sailing yachts, it's huge - they normally have around 30-40hp engines for manoeuvring and slow cruising in no wind. And compared to cars. Drag racing cars produce around 4-5,000hp, still nowhere near tugs.
@Patrick.Weightman
@Patrick.Weightman Жыл бұрын
@@edwardtye4119 Top fuel averages 10,000hp, 8,000hp is considered the low end. Think the highest I've seen personally was a touch over 11. I work in maritime diesel and the two ABC engines I just serviced the other day will be going into a tug, and only produce 2000hp each. In comparison the Wartsila 40s and 50s we service for cruise ships produce 1000-1300hp per cylinder, in a V18 configuration. Also with two engines on board. Overall it's like pointing at the average minivan today and talking about how crazy powerful it is, then using an ATV or Moped for comparison.
@edwardtye4119
@edwardtye4119 Жыл бұрын
@@Patrick.Weightman I was referring to promod drag cars, as I momentarily forgot about top fuel dragsters. I agree with the minivan vs moped analogy, though. Although, I've never heard of a V18 in a car, or at all, before. Also, 1,000hp per cylinder is 18,000 horsepower, which is still rather impressive.

Years ago a former boss/employer, that liked to pretend he was an actual engineer, spent a small fortune building this massive shredder machine to process tires and other things into tiny bits expecting to make a fortune with it. He sourced a tugboat engine that was so big that it was delivered to the local town on a rail car. After getting his monstrous contraption up and running he started testing it. It would eat anything! However, the fatal flaw was that the wannabe engineer never once calculated the fuel burn of a multi-thousand HP engine. Turned out the fuel burn alone ate more money than anything he could shred with it was ever going to be worth! 🤣

Large Vessels such as Mega Container Ships have 2 or more Bow or Stern Thrusters, that require 1 Tugboat assistance in berthing and unberthing from the whaft sides of the port.
@sailortristan
@sailortristan 2 жыл бұрын
Not always. The harbour pilot will decide on the tug package based on the ships particulars and environmental conditions. Bow thrusters are almost never as powerful as a ship docking tug, and do not offer the same degree of control. Most new ships are not built with thrusters because they know the ports they call have adequate tugs available or mandatory tugs through the pilots. In this case, ship owners may choose to not install thrusters and save the cost.
