As somebody that actually does sound work, it really does blow my mind how many people get a gig as a sound guy and don't know anything about what they are doing. Honestly the best mentality to have as a sound guy isn't "It's never my fault." It's "How can I fix this." If you are just flipping the band off then you are about as useful of a sound guy as I am a theoretical physicist.

Had to share this memory ... I too was 17 ... playing in a dump called Club Donna in a tough neighborhood ... with 3 older dudes ... a guy walks into the bar ,,, finds his wife with another guy sitting at the bar ... pull out a 45 and shoot her in the hip and blows her off the stool ... the owner turns to us on an elevated stage and says " Just keep playin' " .... I quickly throw my axe in my case and run the hell out of there .... never got paid ,,,, never went back ... but I did write a song about it ... this in 1965 ,,,,

you can do it with a Radial (and other) DI. I've done it in the studio a few times for super dry distortion sounds. It also could not cause a solid state poweramp to catch on fire. It was probably the "Crate" Logo that did that.

My first band played an outdoor cook off in Atlanta in 2013. We drove three hours from our home town to make the show. We started loading in, we got everything on stage and took a real quick break so the sound guy could fix a few technical issues. My drummer ran to the vehicle to grab his sticks, he came back with a look of horror on his face "I FORGOT MY STICKS!". Now mind you, there are no music stores around, we don't have time to leave and come back, and we are the only full band on the bill. Absolutely no drum sticks in sight. He proceeds to grab small branches and tree limbs, we go on, we play the show and it ended up being an epic gig. Moral of the story, use your surroundings in a time of panic. Alternatively...always make sure you have a back up for everything! 🤣

I was booked to play a RESTAURANT show (??!!!) which is the worst gig you can get. It was a variety show (mostly comics), playing to a room of ppl there to EAT, NOT to watch a show. (Uh oh.) My 4-song set is just me on vocals and electric guitar. So many venues lack proper DIs that I would bring a BACK UP PLAN: an XLR-to-1/1-penis that looks like a gun silencer. Worst case, I'll put the guitar into the MIC cable, and sing a Capella over it! THE SHOW IS PAINFUL, as each stand-up comic BOMBS in front of the audience who are not there to watch lame comics. BEFORE MY SET WE DISCOVER THERE IS NO WAY my guitar can be put into the PA. (Wireless mics mean my backup xlr won't work!) (Etc) FUCK!! Well luckily everyon else has bombed, so....what have i got left to lose? LET'S GO FOR IT! I Put my super-cool silver X guitar standing up onstage and say "ladies & germs, you will NOT be hearing that wicked guitar tonite!" etc, and so I tell them, I will have to "DESCRIBE" the 4 songs they will not be hearing! And my set KILLED! No one (including me!) had ever seen anything like it. (My songs are clever, so Describing them was guaranteed to please any crowd.)

Worst gig was my second show ever. My band played with a very egotistical local band who's members (minus the singer) where in a prior band that did a small tour. Sound check was good, but come show time I got no signal cause someone shoved the speaker cab input jack down into the cab. Don't know how the screws all came loose. I think they were pissed about having to open for us, cause we soundchecked first and it was all good. And somewhere between their soundcheck, their set, and the start of our set, my stuff for tampered with. Our singer got really hammered by the end of our set and desperately wanted to be in the band that opened for us, so between every song he kept rambling about that band being so great. To the point where we just started the next song in the middle of him talking. I quit the band a month later. Not my idea of a good time. Haha too much ego for local nobodies. I just wanted to rock out and have fun.

that reminds me! I play outdoors every night, in tourist cities along the NH seacoast, so people from all walks of life are walking by me, doing my artsy Guitar Sorcery, but the police STOLE all my gear and instruments on several different occasions (!!!) because they can do anything they want and the press and ACLU help them.....and my ONLY guitar was my pink Flying V (3/4 size), but when I had to replace the low E string, the metal thingy in the back of the guitar that you thread the new string thru.....[cuz the strings go thru the body].....it's like a thimble........had somehow fallen out and no way could it ever be found. AND NO STORE COULD REPLACE IT, cuz it was 3/4! So I had to tune it up and it would squeeze thru the WOOD tunnel (since the metal thimble was gone)....and WHILE I WAS PLAYING........the low E would drop 3....4 notes! And i'd have to quickly try tuning it up WHILE i'm looping (!) or doing trippy long echos (so I gotta make each mistake "musical", ha ha), and it would ALWAYS drop down again and again and again and I'd have to avoid that string (!) with customers walking by me the whole time! (You piss just ONE person off, and they'll call cops on you!) But I'm used to crises, so....

I once had a stage hand throw an open water bottle off stage...and into my amp. Dumped all over the chassis through the vents. As I was cussing him out he looked at me and gave me the “oh well” shrug like he did no wrong. Thankfully the amp somehow still worked just fine after. Then we went on to stage and had a sound guy from hell as well. Absolutely no audio in our floor monitors, but would keep repeating “I can hear you just fine out here!”. We would’ve relied on our amps but he kept telling us to turn the amps down because they were too loud and overloading the mics. We couldn’t hear shit other than our drummer. So...we played awfully...at a fairly big festival...with a whole film crew because we wanted to have pro shot videos to post online. After the “pay to play” tickets we bought, and the film crew, we dropped about $750 in total to play the worst show anyone in that band had played.

I had a similar experience with a so called "sound guy". I set up my rig, including my microphone at the right place, and the guy comes with a jack asking my where to plugin to get my guitar. I tell him - my guitar comes out of that mic, need a mic cable - the response: "- Thats just gonna create feedback, you're crazy!" Long story short, end of the night everyone in the crew congratulated me on my sound and wanted to learn this "new thing" of capturing an amp with a microphone. A 15 year old kid with some gear knowledge who had just started playing live (me, I've been a gear nerd for some time now) had just schooled a crew with years on the road. I guess they were on the wrong road for most of the time...

I've heard a lot of bad miced up concerts but that was the worst! no highs and too much bass. The monitors were not plugged in, because this soundguy thougt, that my amp was enough monitoring (it was a Fender Mustang 1). that was my worst concert (also I forgot my setlist and had to imrovise xD)

That reminds me of our only local "sound guy" when I was in high school bands. One show he was supposed to run sound at a local rec center, it's 45 mins before showtime, he's not there (and this was the days before cell phones), so I run home and grab my humble PA so there's at least something. I get almost set up, he finally shows up, insists on setting up his PA (crappy Gemini DJ speakers with a row of tweeters on the top) when I had decent Carvins. But he just kept saying "mine have limiters!" Fast forward to him trying to put a CD in his CD player for pre-show music, and I watched him for 5 minutes putting the CD in upside down. Taking it back out, looking at it, checking wires, then putting the CD back in upside down. I didn't say anything cuz I was pissed at him by them. Finally someone else points it out to him.

My worst gig ever was when we showed up to a venue that we don’t like playing for a number of reasons. There were 3 bands and for some reason we end up playing after the touring/headlining band. As the night progressed the sound guy continued to get more angry and rude for no reason. We just went about our business without too much thought. He interrupted the touring band several times to tell them to play quieter because it was “too loud.” by the time we were playing he had already interrupted during the first song because we were apparently “too loud” as well. We agreed to try and play quieter, within reason. Our singer/rhythm guitarist even went and grabbed his acoustic guitar from his car because his amp was too loud. After the next song the sound guy throws a dirty towel at our drummer and says “here! For your snare” He reluctantly agrees to put it on , but the towel falls off within seconds, and he interrupted a few more times before making us stop halfway through our set. While apologizing to the audience for not being able to finish, he unplugged the singers mic and my amp after trying to take the sticks away from our drummer who wasn’t playing anything. He then picked up my amp as if he were going to take it somewhere. We had been polite and cooperative up until the point where he tried to take our drummer’s sticks away. When I saw him carrying my amp I lost it and told him he’d better put my fucking amp down and never to touch any of our equipment again. He’s no longer the sound guy at this venue, and we are playing there again in 2 days. Hopefully things will go a lot smoother this time around.

I am a student at school of rock and I have seen many stage disasters happen over the years but the worst gig ever was our Queen show. I wasn’t actually involved with the gig but I was in the audience. The set in general was pretty sloppy but the worst song by far was good old fashioned lover boy. During rehearsals the band had decided to move the song a whole step higher in key to accommodate the singers range but the keyboardist was extremely unreliable and he never learned the key change and instead just transposed the keyboard software. After that rehearsals went well and the song sounded fine but the morning before the show the keyboardist finally learned the key change but he never told the tech so the keyboard was still transposed up a step meaning that when he played the song it was ANOTHER whole step higher. The rest of the band had no idea what to do and no one transposed correctly so the song was in four different keys at the same time and was absolutely horrible.

It wasn't even my worst Gig when one of my two GallienKrueger 400 RB went on fire. And it wasn't my worst Gig when the second GK 400 RB started burning. And it sure was not my worst Gig when the first one, after an expensive repair, went on fire, again. After that I changed to GK 800 RB and never had this kind of expensive special effect again. All happened back in 1981. My worst Gig actually was some "Rock against Fascism", when we did a 5 songs set beeing the only metal band, and the Drummer played the first song so fast, nobody noticed that we played it a second time as the crowd demanded an encore. Imagine playing "Warhead" of the Band "Extreme", twice as fast as given. Actually I had a breakthrough, live on stage, three times in my career as a bassplayer. Three times I literally broke through a poorly built stage. Now, this was fun, every time it happened...

I had a hardcore / punk band in HS. We were banned from a few venues, we didn't take anyone's shit and usually it was for pay disagreements. The first time this happened we got into an actual fight with the owner and his crew. This was the second time we played at this venue and things were fine the first go around, so we didn't think much of it. The second time we played there, they tried to pull a fast one. During our set, they kept bringing us drinks from the bar without us even asking and they kept coming regardless. At the end of the night when it came to getting paid, not only did they not pay us, they said we actually owed them money for all of the drinks. That didn't go over well, especially since we were the reason the place was packed (for a second time) since we headlined and did most of the promotion. Shouting turned into shoving and shoving turned into violence. Thinking back this was hilarious because they were a bunch of middle-aged+ dudes trying to rip off and start something with a bunch of 17-18 year olds.

Unknown to me during a break, they moved a huge cooler filled with "PJ" up onto the stage. Well, with a pole mounted bright light that lit up the entire porch blinding me I backed up and fell into the cooler. Got the best applause of the night and was bleached purple for 2 days. Think the worst gig I endured was in PDX, that morning I got a texted from my Dad that my Grandpa had passed away, which was fine because it was something we knew was gonna happen soon. The Band drives up 100 miles to this little Fish n Chip shack, dude shows us the little ass room where we're playing, says our gfs have to buy drinks (water even costed) if they wanted to stay in for the show. No one but the person who booked us showed up, the other band who was after us didn't even come in and listen to us or anything and on top of it. We didn't get paid...needless to say: That project isn't a thing anymore cause we got so discouraged after that show. Go watch the opener if you're at a show, they need support just like the headliners.

My worst gig was the time all the members of our band decided it would be a good idea to eat shrooms before the show. It took me about 20 minutes just to hook up my pedals and tune up, and later on in the set I pissed myself lol

My worst gig was similar. The sound guy plugged some weird device into my second input(which he thought was a line out). Next thing you know my power tubes leaked out and my sound volume gets so low. I basically curse him out because he fucked my amp up, and then he tells me "I've never done this before". Oh, later that night, he did the same thing to the bass player of Drowning Pool. :(

Pro (well amateur) tip: Don't sit your Crate combo amp on an empty beer keg for elevation. It sounds like you're plugged straight in to a 6 foot by 6 foot cast iron reverb plate. Basically, the exact thing that sounds absolutely horrendous for thrash metal.

worst gig for me...booze cruise in Boston. 1985. Singer gets drunk and stands out in the rain getting soaked. Comes back on stage leaving big puddles all over the place. Zap Zap Zap electric shocks for all of us all night long.

Hey Fluff! 2 things. You made this video unlisted, so I don't know how I was able to see it. Also I'm planning on getting a new amp soon (my first amp purchase besides the practice amp I have), and I have about 1000 bucks that my 13 year old self can afford. I would prefer a head and cab setup. (if 1000 dollars can buy one). I have a couple of ideas in mind: A helix stomp, a magnum poweramp and whatever good cab I will also be able to afford. Maybe a Peavey 6505MH, a boss katana 100, a marshall origin 20, or a quilter labs 101. I also will need to buy a cab with the money I have. If there are any other options please let me know. Thanks Fluff. Especially if you read this entire comment.

Options are endless and 1000bucks is quite some money. But I think Katana 100 is safe option and save the rest of your money for later on ...

Go for a used Amp. With 1.000 bucks the options for a good amp and a 212" cab are unlimited - when you're based in the USA.

Hey Fluff I also started out with a shitty Crate amp too. It was a 15w gx15 or something like that. And now my rig is a Engl Savage 120 paired with a Carvin Legacy cab and it slays! My worst gig? Probably last weekend's show the acoustics at this dive bar were terrible. I couldn't hear anything! They had monitors too and they werr off...... Or broken......

We had a club owner in Texas back in 92/93 (time... it's a bitch), try and screw us out of money. We went back to his office to get paid, and he goes, "Well boys. Consider this a learning experience. Door was light, so.... be on your way." I go, "Door means nothing. You signed a contract to pay us (I think it was $500), so, pony up." He proceeds to pull a shotgun out from under his desk, sets it down, and goes, "Best be on your way." Our manager (was really just our friend helping out with everything), pulls his gun out, and goes, "Might want to think again." The owner just laughs, pulls out $500 cash, hands it to me and says, "Balls boys. Balls. Now leave." It was... and experience. I was called "paranoid" for wanting to be armed on that tour, but I guess it paid off? haha

5 bands, we were arguably the better known and for sure the oldest and most experienced, we were supposed to go on 2nd, but made a deal with one band to go on 3rd, thing is out here playing last means playing to the sound guy and the bartender... well things go on, another band demands that they go on 3rd, because they have a curfue or some BS, we say no, 2nd band stops we go to load our junk on stage, and the band that demanded they play 3rd had started loading on stage before the second band even finished... We procede to raise utter Hel and destroy as much shit as possible on the way out, 2 weeks later the club was shut down by the DEA... never heard from any of the other 4 bands again, most of em it was their 1st show, in a very small music community...

My worst gig was playing for some folks at a party and I was the only one who could play piano and saxophone well guy was supposed to hand me the sax after a little piano bit he dropped it in my lap and bruised my leg so bad couldn't hit the pedals legs trembling from the sax being dropped lead guitar player nearly passed out from the heat started slowly going down at almost the same time I kicked a spare drum trone over his butt hit the seat instead of the floor and the crowd went wild as if we'd planned it totally awesome and painful for weeks after but wouldn't have changed anything great memories
