Only writing this if it helps anyone..... This is a very cool trick that would work for some people but I couldn't get the two parts apart..... Which is lucky because once I replace the entire thing including the other part I realize the other part was the reason that my toilet was having issues the screw inside was broken. So some of you might need replace entire thing. Still cool idea!

So I took my entire expensive tool bag with Wiha, Wera and Knipex tools. Closed the bathroom door and told my wife I was busy at work. I turned on the bathroom exhaust and started looking at my phone. 30 min later I opened the box, removed the valve and popped it in. I only used my gloves because I have soft hands. I also used my wire clippers only because I was too lazy to go get some scissors. 3 minutes later I was done with height adjusted. I picked up my stuff in 2 minutes and it looked like I worked on it for 35 minutes to my wife. She was so thankful. We’re all happy. Thank you for the tip. 😂

OMG! So quick and easy! I’m 68, and husband, who is no longer here, used to do all the repairs in our house. I panicked when my toilet started to constantly run, because I had no clue and no money to pay a plumber, let alone a higher water bill. I could clearly see the part was broken. As I searched on You Tube, I came across this video, and I thought hey, maybe I can do this. The other videos I watched involved a huge overhaul, disconnecting and connecting parts, which I knew was beyond something I would be able to do. I can’t thank you enough for posting this video!! Worked like a charm! Thanks man. Get a load of this....I got my water bill and water usage was 3x higher than usual. Checked my meter and sure enough, the little wheel was moving slowly with no water being used inside. I've replaced flapper valves plenty of times but neither me or my wife had heard the sound of that type leak, I had resigned myself that it was a leak in the yard and was trying to get in touch with a plumber. That's when I noticed one toilet "whistling" coming from the flush valve when flushed. Upon closer inspection, found it would continue to run (very quietly, and I also use hearing aids). Turned off water to the toilet and checked the meter...no more leak. Then stumbled on your video and in thirty seconds my water leak problem is GONE. God is good!

IMPORTANT: If you use the method described in this video, I recommend swapping out the approx. 3/4" inner diameter rubber O-ring on the top end of the old Fluidmaster inlet with the same O-ring from the new inlet (the inlet being the long black plastic tube that you are not removing from the toilet). Doing so will add five seconds to the whole process shown in the video. If you have silicone faucet/plumbers grease, I also recommend applying a little grease on the new O-ring after you install it on the old outlet, although this is not a deal breaker because O-ring from the new inlet already does have some lubricant on it from the factory. The rubber seals in these Fluidmaster fill valves degrade over time. That is why I recommend also swapping out the rubber O-ring on the inlet if you are doing a partial swap as shown in the video. The degradation of the rubber seals may be a primary reason why Fluidmaster recommends replacing the flush valve every five years (that and making more money). Also, you don't necessarily have to replace the flush valve when all that needs to be replaced is the valve seal (rubber disc) which is located under the valve cover. It is Fluidmaster part 242, "Toilet Fill Valve Replacement Seal" for 300 and 400 series valves and is readily available for a couple of dollars at the big box stores and hardware stores. I installed a Fluidmaster 400 fill valve in my toilet 26 years ago. Over the years, I needed to replace the valve seal twice. I had to finally replace the 26 year old flush valve today because the rubber seal for the anti-syphon mechanism was shot (I used the method shown in the video but I did also swap out the 3/4" O-ring as I described above). There is no replacement available for the rubber anti-syphon seal so once that is shot, you have no choice but buy a completely new fill valve. From my own recent experience, symptoms of a compromised anti-syphon seal are: - During filling, water drips from the holes at the bottom of the valve housing and runs down the sides of the inlet - Water hammer when the fill valve shuts off

Stashorama, thank you so very much for your comment!! I was not able to move the ring on the old flush valve. I scrolled through the comments and am happy I did! Your solution worked like a charm. Now I have to replace the valve seal on my new fill valve. :) Thank you again, your comment saved my afternoon!
@stashorama
@stashorama 2 жыл бұрын
@@gomalibusurf6098 Part 242 is the replaceable seal that allows water to enter and then exit the fill valve when the float and float lever are in the down/on position. When the float and float lever are in the up/off position, part 242 prevents water from entering the fill valve. The anti-syphon seal is a large neoprene/rubber seal that is inside the fill valve body. Fluidmaster doesn't sell a replacement anti-syphon seal. If you remove the cap assembly from the fill valve, there is a white or gray grate (for lack of a better term) near the top of the body of the fill valve. The anti-syphon seal is below the grate. There are also square vent holes around the outside perimiter of the valve body near the top. If you look closely, you can see the anti-syphon seal via the vent holes. If you want to see the anti-syphon seal in its entirety, It's possible to remove the parts inside the fill valve body by pushing up on the white nylon tube at the bottom of the valve body - it's all snap fit. Just take the valve body and push the bottom of it on a solid surface so the the smaller, white nylon tube inside the valve body pop ups so you can pull the "guts" out of the valve body. I hope what I wrote makes sense. Chlorine degrades the anti-syphon seal over time. Two symptoms of a degraded and compromised anti-syphon seal are 1) water drips or streams out of the vent holes near the top of the valve body when the valve is on and filling the tank 2) water hammer when the fill valve shuts off.
@shadako2
@shadako2 Жыл бұрын
@@stashorama Probably want to go easy pushing the inner tube up, as above. Ripped the syphon seal more. Idea was to try permatex or placing something similar under the seal. It's slightly thicker than plastic you would get under bottle caps.

I found the collar to be much more difficult to move up on the original stem than shown. I ended up using channellock pliers to carefully twist and break the collar off. Once I got the old flow-valve off the install on the new one went very easily as shown. Very helpful. Saved me a big headache.

I had the same problem. I could not move the collar to save my life and finally replaced the whole valve. When I took out the old valve I had to use an adjustable wrench and a small hammer move the collar. Wish I had thought of using channel locks to break off the collar. With my luck I probably would have broken the lower stem. Here’s to no more, or very few plumbing problems.

My toilet is in a very tight space and incredibly hard to reach, as someone with back problems replacing the entire leaking valve was a nightmare and painful that I gave up half way through, I didn’t want to spend $300 on a plumber either. Thanks to you was able to do this in less than a minute, just had to make sure it’s the same fluid master model and it all fit together instantly and works brilliantly now, no more leaking inlet valve which wouldn’t stop filling and wasted so much water!

Oh my gosh! Thank you! I saw this minutes before replacing my fill valve. I did not know I had a Fluidmaster in there already, since I haven't had to replace it before. I checked hopefully. I was super excited when I saw the word "Fluidmaster" on my old valve. I replaced it in about a minute, the extra 30 seconds coming from the fact that the mineral deposits around the sliding collar made it a little difficult to get it moving. Thanks!!

Another benefit from this trick is that you can adjust the water level without having to remove the entire assy from the bowl in order to and rotate the base to raise or lower the float height. Slide the collar up, raise or lower the assy as needed, slide the collar back down to lock it. Great video.

I was really concerned that I could not get the plastic connector nut to budge from the water line. This hack saved me completely and I have the new leftover parts if I ever need them!! I am so happy. I was avoiding using this toilet because of the constant running. Now, it’s like new! A million thanks to you!!

Getting down on the floor on my knees with a bucket and praying it didn't leak when I got done. I have probably changed around ten of them in my life time when I discovered this video. Mike, this was wonderful!! Thank you for posting this. I have been dreading changing out my Fluidmaster Fill Valve but decided to do it today and ran across your post. I am so thankful I did. It is changing out the part under the bowl that I hated the most and your method eliminated that. I was like Catherine, I could not get the collar on the fill valve in the tank to move up. I struggled with it for some time but finally got it to move. The rest was a breeze. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this! You saved me at least two hours. On my toilet, the nut that holds the fill valve in is not accessible without taking the tank off (and of course the nuts that hold the tank on are not visible, so you have to undo them blind). The fill valve was the one that came with the toilet, so I didn't know if it was a Fluidmaster. After seeing how easy the replacement was in this video I thought it was at least worth checking. Turns out it was! I have been putting this off for almost two weeks and was able to fix it in less than a minute. My toilet was made by American Standard, and they buy fill valves from Fluidmaster for many (all?) of the toilets they sell. If you don't know what kind of fill valve you have, it is definitely worth checking.

This worked awesomely. I live in an apartment, and mine started trickling out at the top, and not filling the bowl. I didn't want maintenance people traipsing thru my unit why I was not home, saw how cheap these are, and thought I'll replace it myself. Took seconds just like you said. I only had to adjust the water height. Here's how I replaced the flapper recently. I unhooked the chain to the old one, and disconnected the arms on it, but left it in place. I then set the new flapper on top of it, connecting the arms to the outside of the old one, connected the chain for the new flapper, flushed the toilet, and quickly pulled the old flapper out from underneath. Worked like a charm.
