Unreal Engine 5.3 came with a new volume type: Heterogeneous Volume.
Accordingly, ninja has been updated with a new generic volume function,
Handling ALL native UE volume types: fog, clouds - and heterogeneous volumes
The update comes with…
- wrapper materials for the new volume function
- minimal setups, showcasing volume function properties
- fluidsim driven and passive setups (passive = non-interactive)
Setups are demonstrating usage in the 1 meter to 100 kilometers size range, combining various volume types and exploring multilayer volumes.

Looks very promising! I'm on UE 4.27 for now, so when I manage to get a UE5 compatible PC, I'll definitely get this!

Epic as always. Great job, Andras! I bought all the Fluid Ninja plugins about a year ago but haven't been able to use them yet. Hopefully this will be possible with those versions because this is exactly what I've been looking for 🤞🤞

Very cool! I would love to see a demo of using this for bullet hits, small grenade explosions, and smoke grenades. These are needed in most shooters.

Thanks! - Made for RTX gen cards, between 140 FPS and 340 FPS on RTX 3080 - depending on the scene. With proper constraints: game ready

The above demonstrated technology enables us to create a pyroclastic flow --- CVOL in far view, combined with HVOL in closeup.

It looks fantastic! Is this smoke also illuminated by reflected light? Does it work with GI Lumen?

yes, the included shaders are Lumen compatible - also responding to multiple point lights. While "Fog" and "Clouds" are receiving indirect light too, "Heterogeneous Volumes" do not (by default): so we have added in a custom ambient / ambient occlusion pass to the material, to fix this. See detailed description in the DOC, linked in the video details!

I just don't understand why Ninjia fluid can simulate a city scale nuclear explosion while Unreal built-in niagara fluid can only do like a room scale...

It is partly depending on the Volumetric Type we use. This nuke uses the "Cloud" shader - while, UE devs seem to use clouds only for... well.. clouds ;)))

Thank you! --- In the 100km range we use VolumeClouds. A single cloud layer renders with ~200-250 FPS on RTX 3080, double layered clouds (eg. volcano smoke column + cloud shield) do ~140-160 FPS. This could be significantly improved by reducing sampling quality.

Thanks! --- The "large scale volumes" example level contains 9 examples - we could switch between them using the 1-9 keys (in-play). 1. load this map: \Content\FluidNinjaLive\Volumetrics_v2\VolumeGeneric5_LargeScaleExamples_NoFluidSim.umap 2. Press Play. Press the "3" or "4" key (as the level placed text instructs) To permanently enable the nuke, set the visibility of "VolumeCloud_MultiLayer_Volcano1" Actor to FALSE, and the visibility of "VolumeCloud_MultiLayer_Mushroom1" to TRUE. How do I setup fog simulation using sequencer ? Is it same as shown in previous old tutorial on sequencer about 4yrs ago?

Thanks for reaching out! See Manual Chapter 23: "Sequencer and MovieRenderQueue" (sidenote: the simple method how we use sequencer, has not changed through the years: step1 expose fluidsim param to sequencer, step2 drive param via sequencer)

Ninja is scalable. Fluidsim driven Fog Volumes perform above 340 FPS On RTX 3080, around 100 FPS on GTX 1070. Cloud volumes: mid. HETEROGENEOUS Volumes are heavy, between 120 and 240 FPS on RTX 3080, not recommended for GTX gen cards. Learn more from the DOC linked in the video details.
