Ever dreamed of throwing a whip? Or maybe you're already on your way, but they don't feel quite right? Starting small and initiating the whip with the correct body movements makes all the difference.
Key Takeaways:
1. Jump with all the weight in your feet, keep your hands light to unlock movement
2. Get comfortable with small bar turns (or bigger bar turns for extra credit)
3. Start small to practice; upon takeoff peel one shoulder back slightly. Isolate this movement - don't turn with your hands; only use your shoulders
4. Use your upper body as the motivational source to initiate bike movement
Get easy access to Simon's most famous teaching points as you follow Fluidride’s @linnearooke through her learning progression, and gain insights for your own riding.

ABOUT SIMON LAWTON
Following his own Pro Downhill mountain bike racing career, Simon Lawton (Owner and Founder) has spent the last 25 years analyzing the top riders in the world to understand the tiniest details that contribute to their greatest successes, and also any weaknesses that are holding them back. With an exceptional understanding of kinesiology, Simon has developed his own teaching curriculum that explains the incredible relationship between human and machine. He has trained top pro mountain bike racers across the world, and his foundational techniques apply equally to beginner riders. His on-bike drills allow you to break down complex skills on the bike and develop correct techniques.

ABOUT LINNEA ROOKE
Linnea has been racing locally in the pro category, but until this year she had almost no formal training and was held back by major gaps in her technique. While she was able to carry speed well on straight downhills and high-bermed turns, she lacked foundational cornering skills and was timid in the air. In Feb 2020, she met up with Fluidride to help with a filming trip in Baja, and was fascinated by Simon's teaching methods. Wanting to be part of this mission, she left her career in healthcare in July 2020 to officially join the Fluidride team as COO. We started filming this series to document her journey of cleaning up bad habits, adding new skills to her toolkit, and chasing her dream of riding with style.

Hands down the best tutorial on how to start with whips. All other videos show advanced whips that don't do anything for those who are afraid to even slightly turn the handlebars in the air. Great job!

I'd probably start packing cookies on my rides, if I thought I'd get some tips out at the trails...something to think about. The reply to the kid was priceless "Look behind you." One of the highlights of the vid, right there. The whip still eludes me, after nearly 20 years of relatively serious riding. One thing that's not helping is that I'm probably thinking too much about it. I would say that you're spot on with learning the mechanics of the movement. Clearly that works, and it's important that people know that "baby steps" and repetition is what builds on proficiency. There aren't any magic pills when it comes to athletic feats. This video was really well put together, both content and audio/video production. The inverted bike trick is something I have yet to try. It seems so beneficial and so fundamental (mechanics again), I'm glad that was in there. I like that you've got a microphone on and you can keep talking while you're riding, instead of stopping and starting throughout the clip. I don't see many vids that are set up that way, so I hope others see that and take notes!! Again, you're on point with learning/practicing the mechanics - they'll progress your riding AND your teaching abilities!! Great "how to" video, now I'm gonna go make some cookies...

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment!! And yes we'll trade cookies for riding tips anytime! 🤣 I'm super honored that you found the video useful and easy to watch. Honestly the biggest thing that changed this for me was taking the bar turn *out* of it completely, and just focusing on pulling my shoulder back in the air. This started bringing the back of the bike around a little. Once I got a feel for it, I added the bar turn back in for a little bit more dramatic movement. Let me know how it goes! And how those cookies turned out! -Linnea

Excellent video and sensational progress! Way to go! One tip though, your mic pack, just the same as a walkie on your duty belt, does not go at the center of your back or over your spine. If you land on your back, that's the same as landing on a brick, on your spine. Ideally, you pack should be off center but behind your arm. Lower your arm to your side, slide the mic pack or walkie over until it touches the back of your arm. That keeps it off your spine and off the point of your hip bone.

Oooooh this is such an interesting point - we definitely did not think of that. You'll likely see them in the wrong spot for a few more episodes we just filmed but thank you for mentioning this! We'll try to find better placement 👍. Thank you!

i do a different style of riding, but that seems closer to a turn down motion. i think of whips with a scrub motion on the face, leaning the bike to minimize airtime.

Great video! I've also done the floor practice, and it helps big time to get the feel of moving the bike around. I think the big thing with whips is mostly mental. Overthinking what you're doing and not riding loose. I've been riding for about 7 years now and still have issues with em. I have a bunch of riding vlogs on my channel about learning them too. Very helpful video, ya gained a sub. Keep up the killer work!!!
