I've been promising this vlog for a while now. Well its finally here...
My HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS26 review.
I've owned my Scorpion for just over a year and have ridden over 3000km on her so far. Today I let you have a closer look at the way I have her set up to assist me in everyday cycling as well as for those longer touring periods.
I also give you a breakdown of the cost for the added parts and accessories and a final total price at the end (2017 prices).
I hope you enjoy having a closer look at my trike and that it helps you better understand both the pro's and cons of the scorpion trike, (in my opinion of course 🙂) .

Hi Tim. I just discovered your channel. My situation is somewhat similar to your own, though I'm older at 61. I have a seriously bad back (2 unsuccessful surgeries) and survived leukemia 3 years ago. I want to buy a trike and get out there, but cost is the biggest obstacle. I test rode an HPV Scorpion awhile back and loved it (I had NO back pain after about 2 hours of riding!) , but the $4000-5000 US price tag is way beyond my means. I'm looking at a Performer JC-70 or Sun Seeker EZ Tad SX. These are around $1400-1500 US. Performer seems to make excellent trikes, but there are no dealers in the Denver, Colorado area where I live. Not giving up though; I'm going to find a way. The back pain and aftereffects of the cancer chemotherapy keep me from being active, and I'm pretty much homebound. A trike seems to me to be a way to rejoin the outside world again. Cycling has always been my favorite form of exercise, but like you I can no longer tolerate a 2 wheeler. I have to get out of the house and out on the road again! Keep showing us what you're up to--it's an inspiration to disabled people around the world like me!

It might be worth you doing some digging to find out whats being organised? I would also love to but I'm UK based and wont be able to join in.

Try the Terra Trike Rover. Test ride one. They are the most affordable of the trikes with a high seat.

@@StellarFella I decided to go with a 20“ Trident Trekker. It's a bit more expensive than some other brands, but it has two things I consider essential: it folds small enough to fit in my 1992 Civic hatchback, and it has rear suspension (jolts are a factor with my back). The Trekker is the lowest-priced model I could find that has both of these features. I'm in the process of assembling it in my garage, and am impressed with the overall quality of the frame and components. The seat has a wide range of adjustability, including lumbar support. We shall see how well the Trekker suits me when the weather here in Denver cooperates (streets are snowpacked and it's 18°F as I write this) . Thanks for your suggestion, Cecil. I considered the Rover, but I generally choose things that are somewhere in the middle in terms of price. That's pretty much what I've done in this case. Actually it was my wife's suggestion that helped me make the final decision. She said, "Look, you know you need to make it easier on your back. You also want to transport the trike. Why not spend a little more to cover both? “

Tim! Appreciate the shout out about the Efneo! Very nice trike. Expensive yes but you did need some specialized modifications so I think your total expenditure is good. Your side bag t-bar bracket is genius. Well done. I have one side bag that uses the same attachment clamp system. Have not used it yet but will soon. For seniors, the Scorpion PLUS is the ticket. It has a higher and more forward leaning seat. You can look sideways from a higher sitting position AND everyone else can see you more easily as well. The front wheels are set a bit wider for stability screaming down hills and when turning. This Scorpion PLUS helps make it appreciably easier to sit down in and get back up out of the seat.

I am getting mine in a couple of months. It has the Shimano Steps crank and a Rohloff rear hub and wrist rests. I am 73, have suffered a stroke, COPD and in 2020, a heart attack. I got through and still work full time. I dont feel the need to relax. I relax when I sleep at night. The stroke was the worst as it affected my left leg. I cannot walk long distances but still kept my Diabetes 2 under controll with diet and walks with no medication. The bike will make my excercises more effective. I am 75 kilos, down from 95 in 2014. I keep hunger in check with lots of cold water and eat only once a day. It took a few months getting used to it. Fast foods are a big no, no. No alcohol or tobacco for me. The social services is paying for this bike for me and I need to only pay a fee of 500 euros so I cannot choose all the extras I would have liked but I will talk with the shop about it and ask if I can pay for them. Just waiting for it to arrive.

Cool setup. I am thinking about switching to a HPV Scorpion FS 20 trike for my next tour. I agree about the back wheel. 20” is better for loaded touring.

My twin has the same trike but with body-link seat. 170mm is the stock length of most adult pedals. The pedals on a recumbent unless you have long legs, put a lot of stress on your knees. Putting crank shorteners (bolts onto the outerside of crank) give 2 shorter pedals sizes and increase pedal width allowing legs to work parallel to one another. Less/no hip strain. 150mm-ish crank lengths gives a more circular pedaling action.

The newer model has a 2-section seat - this allows you to pitch the bottom of the seat differently from the seat back. Thumbs up.

I've rode this trike for about 5 years now. It is called the SUV of recumbents. It's heavier than many others but it is a tough trike and it really stands up well to heavy use. I rode this bike about 800 miles throughout Florida pulling a trailer I built myself. Doing a trip like that the ScorpionFS26 is the one to go with.

I my not be seeing all the comments, so forgive it this is a repeat. Couple of clarifications: The white bar underneath the front of the trike is an anti-roll (or sway) bar. It discourages the trike from leaning in turns. MacPherson strut describes the whole front suspension system, really; the strut itself, and the triangular link at the bottom of it. The whole thing is very standard automotive kit. The no squat business refers to the rear suspension. If the chainline passes too far from the suspension pivot, pedaling can activated the suspension. In this design, the chain passes very close to the pivot.

The white bar is called a stabilizer and macpherson strut is what’s holding up the front wheels, every cars have a stabilizer bar these days unless you still drive a horse and buggy - excellent and detailed vid 👍

The white bar is the antiroll bar. The McPherson struts are the suspensions with the shock absorber.

HI Tim. Thank you for talking about your right leg, i think you may have save my left foot and part of leg from a very painful accident., after looking to buy an fs 26 pe. My first trike! maybe 30 times I test roded many trikes over the years in parking lots maybe 6 or 7 mins each ride, I did not have a clue that my foot could come off the pedal catch payment, pulling my food under the front suspension, But in the instant my foot slipped I was able to pull up on my leg as it came in contact with the front cross bar. My leg hurts a bit , but I still have my foot! Thank you for the tip. Going clip less may not work for me.

Foot suck! It really sucks, eh!? I've come close once or twice even with the clipless. If you dont want clipless then look into powergrip pedal straps. Some of my subscribers use them and really like them.

Being a truck driver my truck vibrates all the time I learned a trick with the screws that come loose if you’re losing it put a little bit of super glue on it and tighten it back up it doesn’t lock it so tight that you can’t undo it if you need to but it will no longer vibrate loose and for your tent I just get a basic back bike rack and put it on there because they’re designed for the bigger tires and it’ll set up above where your current rack is

Really enjoyed the review Tim . HP make a high quality Trike especially the sprung Scorpion , Matts trike is holding up good considering the vast climate it is enduring and yours as well . I like Catrikes myself , I have a Pocket and a 700 and the cost for the pair , well I am still paying and for awhile yet . I actually prefer the Pocket for street riding with its short wheel base , the 700 is like driving a rail dragster through a parking lot at times but is real fast for those cool Sunday mornings with no traffic .

Almost forgot , Try getting some emery cloth which is black and able to get wet about a 100 grit and cut some strips and use double face tape to adhere it to the bar under your support bars and this should help . Even grip tape they use for stairs might work but may be a tad too heavy . Give it a try

I was seriously considering at HPV Scorpion until I took a look at the Azub's. What I like about them is they are innovative first of all, and 2nd, have more options. For instance they have a great rear rack that fits the 26 inch wheel. You can get a dynamo hub without the lighting part. Their front suspension is awesome. Seems like a pretty cool company too. But the cost... ah. Think I want one with both electric and internal gear drives. I like the ICE trikes as well, but again, not as much as the Azub. But the cost is bit better.

Tim, pls look at a flashlight bracket for a rifle to replace your handlebar extenders brackets. They’re cheap on EBay and they are sturdier in connecting the two tubes.

Nice video, however there are a couple of errors: a Macpherson strut is a suspension component that has the damper inside a coil spring, the white bar is an anti roll bar. The anti squat is also present on their two wheel machines and means that drive pressure on the chain does not compress the rear suspension causing the trike to bob which is a waste of energy, it is achieved through the design of the rear suspension.

ice have a rack extension you atatch to the top of the rack for a top bag etc. Quick release seat will be easy to steel, the luxury ones costing about £450

You are right about the rear wheel size. Besides, if you must carry a spare tire it fits in any wheel... and is smaller and lighter. Did you measured the total wheight of your trike whith all the add-ons? One of these days I'll measure the Hase Kettwiesel Evo included the specific rear bag, mirrors, trip computer, etc. Not light for sure.

I knew it was not cheap, but this is even way higher than I expected. I am going to build my own recumbent trike and I ordered some parts. For now I expect to be ready for 250 to 300 euro and with some upgrades where I am thinking of, I will be ad max 400 euro and made to fit me. I will have also a second frame without parts other than the parts I got from an old bike on. But that one will be for someone that is interested in it or I build it later as more as a racer. My frame will have in the rear a 26 inch and in the front 20inch wheels. A seat with foam that is shaped to my back and adjustable with hatwrest. I will ad on one stand up help bars that are welded on it. A 12v battery for lights and charching my phone. A trailer with solar Pannal to charche the battery. It will also give a lot of space to put stuf in. I like the side bags and I will ad them also. The bags and solar panel will higher the cost. But that I can ad later. Rear 10 gears and front 3 so I have 30 gears. I want it to be good on flat and in the hills. Not really for top speed. That is what I maybe do with the second one that will be very basic.

Tims Trike Trips I have the wheels ready. The front wheels spoked and they look great. This month I get the metal and I have now an address for old metal. They have old bikes and I need a few parts and I want rear suspension on my trike. I will make a similar luggage mounting system but also a rack on to of the wheel. Only I mount that part what is on top maybe on the wheel part it self. It will stay above the side parts, so that is not a problem. I went for a 26 inch rear wheel and get a 26inch x 2.0 tire on it. I go for the 26, because a bigger tire will handle holes in the road better. Even with the suspension, it is better to have a bigger wheel. An other advantage is, is that the derailleur is higher from the ground. With a 20 inch wheel, it is a lot closer to the ground and you will damage it a lot faster even with protection. A smaller wheel has an advantage that it is a bit faster than a big wheel, but for touring, you will not notice that. You have a build in gearing system, so you don't have the problem as you go to 20 inch wheel in the rear. The mirrors is a thing. I try to keep them a bit narrower, so they are more protected. Battery under my seat so I can charge my phone on my bike and use it to power my lights. I have seen some nice roofs for on the trike. They are easy to make and protect you a bit from the sun and rain. We'll your upper body. It also makes that you are more visible and you can mount things on it. But that I will ad as last as my trike is ready.

Hi Stephanie and welcome to the channel. I'm not in the market for a replacement trike at the moment. Of course the day might come where I have to think about it. When that day comes I'll be test riding as many makes and models as I can before deciding. As I'm sure you have already realised recumbent trikes can be quite a 'large' investment. I agree ICE trikes seem to be a quality brand. I haven't ridden one myself but have heard nothing but good reports about them.👍

Excellent video! Question. Are the Stand up assist bars sold as pairs ? I have a early modelTerraTrike(not sure of availability in the UK.) The manufacturer suggested HP Stand up bars since I’m considering the addition of assist bars to mine. Due to the type of steering mechanism. Your comment seemed somewhat guarded regarding the HP bars. Appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Dave, I was pretty certain I already typed a reply to your comment but it seems to have disappeared so here it is again (roughly)... The assist bars are sold in pairs. If you have the chance to get and fit them then I would definitely suggest you do. The method of attachment isn't the best but I have managed to repack tape and rubber between the clamp and frame without too much bother. The added bonus of the stand assist bars is the space you have for attachments and electronics. Very handy indeed.

I am the jerk who recommended to use solar panels to charge your batteries with and I got jumped on about it. Today is 11 August 2019, I was watching How's it Built. They were showing about solar panels and how powerful they are and flexible. They work so good the Military especially my Marines are using them and swear by them and can be packed up in their backpacks or duffel bags and once pulled out and hooked up they can run their computers, phone, and other electronic devices. So Tim, check into it, you might be amazed. I have a couple of the small chargers about the size of a cellphone and they will charge 2 devices each. Take care.

I had to take 2 rear racks and put them together to make one racks that would work and if you know how to weld than I would weld the racks together or find a good friend who knows how to weld and get her done.

I've just bitten the bullet and ordered a new set of fenders from HPV. I've now moved on to trying to lighten my load and so I dont think I'll be needing to use that space any longer.

I have ordered the Greenspeed Magnum XL which will have three 20 inch wheels. No suspension, but the trike will hold up to 450 lbs. Not intending to transport much other than water, food, spare tubes, and repair tools. I must get ready to hand out business cards for where I bought my trike. @@TimsTrikeTrips I just got back from riding it on a level route at the Oceanside, California harbor. I really like the ride. I'm 330 lbs. and want to pedal my weight down by at least 75 lbs. I need to get grab handles for each post to help me pull myself up and out of the seat easier. And two side posts for the middle front. One to mount a night light on and the other for a camera eventually.

Hi again Peter. Due to my disabilities I was unable to ride two wheels any longer so I started looking for something else to do. It wasn't long before I came across Matthew Galat and later Sylvia Halpern on KZbin and they showed me that I could still get out there and cycle tour but on three wheels instead. Both those two ride HP trikes and I just kind of fell into it from there.I was very impressed with the quality (but not so much the price tag) and I hope that that quality & reliability will see me riding it for many years to come. Compared to many people out there I am very much a newbie to triking and I have no experience of other brands so I cant offer any comparisons, sorry. I just saw the trike that I liked and saved up hard to get it.

@T C I ended up buying an ICE Sprint X Tour and took delivery at the end of April. I'm loving getting out and about on it! ICE have been very helpful and I'd recommend them for their product quality and after sales service too. The dealership I bought mine from (Saddle Safari, Marlow, Bucks) were brilliant as well.

Nice review pinon drive maybe worth a look at but like everything else expensive effneo drive definitely a consideration shame on them for useless customer service. I have a Ice sprint x 26" with full suspension also fitted with shimano steps e 6000 motor. Like you have spinal problems and a weak right leg PS dont ask how much as the bank manager will not be happy lol look forward to your next ride out.

I just got my first trick mine is somewhat slong the line of ur bike in the sence that my cranks are out in the but it ends there mine has the two tires in the back and there tilted in about 35 %and the front tire Is right between my leg and my cranks are the farthest forward of anything on the bike and I set right down in the fram my ass is about 8 inches off the ground it has no handlebars u lean it pivots in the middle and turns it's very comfortable to ride I really like it but I can't find one on the internet I know it was built organ by a company called Brike Bikes but anymore information stops there is there anyone who can tell me anything about my new bike

Thanks for the excellent video. So, if I may ask, what would you estimate the entire trike with all the modifications cost you? (Or maybe you wouldn't want your wife to see the answer -- LOL.) I'm planning on buying the Catrike Dumont in the near future and know that in spite of its high price I will have at least another $1,000 of modifications right from the start. Have you ever ridden in Florida? I enjoy the Withlacoochee Trail near my home -- let's ride it together sometime.

Hi Mark. The final total is in the video but its really hard to read. I think its something over £5500 or over US$7000. Its an expensive hobby but I still think I'm getting value for my money. I haven't ridden anywhere in North America (yet) but I retire in 4 years time and its definitely on my to do list then and maybe some shorter trips before then as well, who knows. If I do plan on Florida sometime then I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks for the invite 👍

@@TimsTrikeTrips I love the Withlacoochee Trail because it has no hills; is basically 46 miles long with much of it tree lined and shaded -- particularly south of Inverness, FL. It is part of the "Rails to Trails" system in Florida; former train tracks changed to asphalt trails.

The horribly uncomfortable standard EckoMesh seat negates all the benefit of a should be a world class suspension. Was told by the factory they had the premium seat but only for new builds (my bike was 2 days old when I called). I would never buy a HP Velotechnik product due to the absence of customer care or customer satisfaction.
