This is by far the funniest way to catch fish, much less flounder. Not surprised to see you get onto to this bite. Duos are my favorite all around. Duos really vary in action depending on the size. The 100 is more rounded like a LC pointer. It rolls and throws a good flash. Although the 100 doesn't have a weight transfer system like the 110 or Rozantes it still casts really well. The 110 is more of side to side action like a vision 110.
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Duo makes great jerkbaits, the 120 is by far my favorite from the lineup - extremely responsive to light taps as well as full on snaps. The 100 - no weight transfer so I don't throw it much - the 110 has a very sloppy action that doesn't look good to me at all but catches fish. Nothing like the Vision 110 action imo, but it works. Haven't tried the 130 yet but the little 85SP has amazing action for its size. Sadly, no weight transfer there as well, so I don't find myself using it nearly as much.
@rexbanner7719
@rexbanner7719 2 жыл бұрын
@@CookingandFishing I was reading about the 85sp b4 it came out and was so disappointed when I found out how light it was and it would have a WTS. I figured it would be like the 90s, which are good just reall tough to cast. Thinking the 85s were redundant I just ordered 1 in River Bait. I just about wore the finish off 2 weeks that November. The 85 can cover enough ground in FW, it would be tough in SW so I haven't tried it. The Rozy 77 and 63 have WTSs. The 63 works really well under the lights when they're really spooky and wont touch a bigger bait. The 100sp has more of a twitch bait action where the 120 is like a slash bait. The Duo 110 is a combination of the 2, it cuts harder then the 100 but still has some of that lazy rolling swim. It doesn't have the crisp action of a Vision 110, its wider while being heavier so it fishes heavier then the MB . I related that darting to the Vision 110 because they're universal, everyone uses them. You can add a feather to the Duo 110 hook, it stops faster and you can hit it harder without blowing it out. I haven't noticed it making enough of a difference to warrant using them on every bait, I could be wrong though.
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing 2 жыл бұрын
@@rexbanner7719 The 85 is a gem, not sure if they can achieve that action with a weight transfer much like the LC Pointer 65 has an unparalleled action at that size - fixed weights low in the belly really gives the smaller baits that crisp stop and shimmy. Not a fan of the rozantes, but lakes are different. The 110 is a very specific situation JB for me, but when they're on that bite they're on it.
@rexbanner7719
@rexbanner7719 2 жыл бұрын
@@CookingandFishing Yep...I like the Pointer 65, but I like the Rozy 63 because it casts so well for the size. I just wish Duo would bring back some colors they discontinued. The available in general is pretty low as well. In jersey theres was only 4 liscenced distributors last time I checked. I have a couple 120s but I'm hesitant to use them 2 of them are discontinued colors I cant replace. I thought I had ordered 12 110s and 100s and turned out I ordered 24 a few years back. I must have hit back after adding them to my cart on TWs website. The Duos didnt show up so I added them all again. That's why I used them in SW, I had more then a couple to spare. I surprised you dont care for the Rozys, I really do well with them. The 77 and 110 jr are my 2 go winter JBs. Generally if 1 doesn't work the other will. I like your videos and it's great see someone else do everything possible to not harm those big females. Tight lines

Here I am about to go try the whole discussion on SOL on the jerk shad and you change it up! Very cool. Do you think this would work with a mag darter?
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing 2 жыл бұрын
You should definitely try the 6" jerk shad on 1/4oz jigs - that's sort of the baseline fluking from shore technique and jerkbaits won't replace that. But yeah...super fun bite when the conditions are right. Fluke will hit anything every now and then, but a lure designed for straight retrieve (like a mag darter) is very different from a suspending jerkbait. I've caught them on SP minnows and such but those were random fish.

I've done the lipless crankbait for fluke and like you, very mixed results. I think I had 3 NY keepers in one trip a few years back off the kayak, but then couldn't replicate at all. They look almost identical to me, but obviously they are different species. I guess this is an example of convergent evolution, though I'm not sure how distantly related they are. It does seem to me that california halibut density is a lot less than our summer flounder on the east coast.

No worries - just in case it wasn't clear in the video I didn't mean to denigrate how you guys fish a jerkbait. From what I understand the cali halibut is a 2-3 bite per day kind of fishery from shore, and with your flat beaches I assume you have to cover a ton of water. Here our flounder are pretty much stacked up during the season, and it's not uncommon to have 50-100 fish days even from shore if you know what you're doing. As such we can spend a lot more time dissecting a small area with a jig and in this case, fishing a jerkbait with frequent pauses like is standard in freshwater bass fishing. And very nice setup btw, the new exprides are amazing!

This is the most popular method to fish for "fluke" (Olive flounder) in Japan from shore, they make tons of jerk baits specifically for fluke even.
@CookingandFishing

The Japanese know the difference between a freshwater jerkbait and a sinking Hirame minnow plug, which are not jerkbaits and not worked like jerkbaits at all. But they do look similar.
@jperiksen
@jperiksen 2 жыл бұрын
@@CookingandFishing Actually they sell both jerkbait (suspending) and sinking minnows for Hirame. I have to look up the specific names for them again but I've used both while living there. The jerkbait type is normally used when they are tight to the shore and only have a small band of space to present in while the sinking type is used more to just cover a lot of ground or when the fish are spread out.
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing 2 жыл бұрын
@@jperiksen The vast majority are sinking plugs made for chucking/winding in current and covering water. I know bc I have a box of them - Duos/MBs/Palms/Shimanos etc. If I ever visit the left coast for calibut I'll be sure to bring them...but in function they are not remotely similar to the freshwater jerkbaits I used in this video. If you try to snap them off slack line they blow out, even the suspending and slow floaters. You can throw the occasional twitch while winding and they look great, but that's not what I consider a true jerkbait at all.
