I first listened to Flume in the summer of 2014. I was 20, a sophomore student in Warsaw, Poland. Little worries, few problems. That was my Belle Epoque. I watched shiny new skyscrapers rise in my city as I was returning from drinking cider and dancing all night long in open-air clubs on the banks of Vistula. One of the first electronic music artists I've listened. It felt new, it felt weird, it captured the spirit of that age perfectly. Listening to this now - a few failed university courses, a few bullshit jobs, a few festivals, a few acid trips, one pandemic and many techno raves later, I feel again like that excited, naive 20-year old listening to these beats.

@jacksonlaframboise62572 жыл бұрын
I just “got” Flumes music yesterday. I decided to have a whole ass active listening sesh. What I came away with is, it’s the most human edm I’ve ever heard. Nothing is perfect but, everything that is sort of fucked up is 100% elaborated on/ justified. It gives the song a really unique character. It’s abrupt and random sometimes. Other times it’s 100% as it should be. The contrast between, not only elements but, sections. The space. Like, bruh. In this video, the projected faces aren’t lined up with the sculptures. Is it a metaphor? As a dude who makes shit, probably not. Or at least not intentionally. It was prolly just done because it was more provocative than if it were to have been as you expect it to be. That’s how I view art. It doesn’t have to mean anything. It doesn’t have to even make you feel something intentionally. It just has to be wrong. But wrong in a way that feels right, and a way you couldn’t have guessed. And same goes with every other element. The music is not only creative. It sounds like how creativity feels. Dude throws spaghetti at a wall and, who tf says it has to stick. Maybe it’s cooler if that spaghetti falls. Maybe the sauce stains are beautiful in their own way. Maybe I can take those sauce stains and elaborate on them. It’s pure fluidity. Every decision sounds like it stemmed from the one prior. And no decision was questioned or second guessed. It was just the first thing that came to mind, committed to so hard that it formed the most honest sounding shit imaginable….From what I’ve seen, the dryers art stems from something specific. An intent. “This is going to make the users feel this way, and it needs to sound like this”. Naw. The best art is formed the same way how natural phenomenons are formed. Ya think the earth tried to make trees nd shit? Prolly not. Shit just happened and eventually other shit happened. And all that happened thanks to the strictures and patterns that already existed. Flumes music is just shit happening because the structures that his mind possessed. It is him. And as a human, little bits of that relate. Even if the over arching feelings may not be exact or intentional. They are at least relatable. Because they are off sometimes. Kinda reminds me of Kanye a bit, if I’m being honest. But, it’s his own take on it, whatever it is. Oh yeah. And his drums go brrr. Nd his sub goes ~~~~. Nd his sound design goes hard.
@jacksonlaframboise62572 жыл бұрын
But, if I had to summarize it. Dude has an absolutely cracked sense of contrast. It’s like, he knows the exact opposite of of any abstraction. It’s like, what’s the opposite of an egg. You could say everything outside of the egg. But, naw. That’s a cheap way out. What feels the opposite of an egg? A building. Something rusty. For me, it’s an old ass lawnmower. Now, this will make zero sense to 90% of anybody. The thing about flume is, he could probably answer this in a way where most people would go like “bruh. That makes sense. But, fucking how?” So Flume. If you stumble into this comment. What’s the opposite of an egg.

Say nothing and let the humans destroy themselves. Polarization of all issues. Division. Take care of your own self and watch everyone else die from ignorance and hate. Yeah good plan. Or say something and change the world. Having a large platform means people listen. Love is the key always.

The symbolism and imagery here is some of the best I've ever seen in my life, period. I think he's trying to tell us that he's lived life at such a fast speed and that it's both exhilarating and exhausting. He's also started noticing the cracks in his own life and achievements and how his massive fame has left him being accompanied by mostly a nameless faceless crowd (his millions of listeners). His performance (the racing; his music/career/fame) is starting to seem at best, a dangerous game where you're at risk of crashing any second and, at worst, a completely fabricated life that he can't seem to shake and find his true self. The visuals are very clearly dmt inspired to me and this leads me to think that, due to psychedelics or not, he's felt closer to death than ever before. Like he's driving straight towards it on his sick motorcycle. And there's so many more things to decipher like the colorful birds in the jungle(death) and around the table, and how the one on his shoulder is completely black, contrast to his bright colors on his uniform and bike. Similar to the deeper, more painful meaning of the lyrics to the pop style lyrics in a lot of his singles. Well done my boy. Hope you're doing ok

this explanation does make sense, but from what i read in a interview that just came out (could be false idk) that the song is about post relationship stuff
@ryangooseling27582 жыл бұрын
@@manit9226 I can see that for the song itself, with the lyrics especially. Maybe the video is a more introspective explanation of why that particular person leaving hurt so bad?
@ryangooseling27582 жыл бұрын
@@manit9226 I'm convinced he's struggling with the career and fame because in the video, he's at home but he still has the suit on. He could take the helmet off and relax a little out of public eye but the stress of who he is he has to wear 24/7. Then again there is a second feminine looking racer at one part so the race might just be the relationship
@patrickbiernat40392 жыл бұрын
He did mention in the interview after the video dropped that the album is based on the fight between humans and nature, the destruction of the two forces mainly humans attacking natural wildlife and causing over population. He also said that the music video kind of tells this part of the story, a biker having to make money to survive in the world but destroying everything around him with the multitude of condescending sponsorships he wears. And yes he also ended a relationship a while back before making the album so that plays a part as well with the lyrics. All in all this video is the first piece to the overall album concept.

@FeelingOfDoom2 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. I would’ve liked a a little more melody right out the gate of the hook where she says “Now I’m on the inside yadada” I would’ve like a really nice release into a classic Flume melody but it just kinda died and went into something less impressive idk. He’s ridiculously talented and it’s his art, but damn the teaser before it was released led me along deeply.
