Agreed. Clive Bunker is my second favorite Tull drummer. It's hard to stand out when Barriemore Barlow is what came next.

Tull released their first album on my birthday. Literal birthday. I've seen them live 5 times and every show was fantastic. My fondest and clearest memory was from when I was in college in my first apartment on a spring day I had just bought the Benefit album on those new fangled "CD" things. The song "Inside" played. I remember that moment, the smells of the apartment and, the sunlight on the spring day, everything just like it's happening now. It's amazing how a song can trigger such clear memories and emotions. Tull fan for life, literally 😀

It needs to be mentioned that Ian's phenomenal flute playing is achieved despite the fact that, because of a deformity, he can't use the little finger on his right hand. Also, I remember him saying in an interview many years ago, that when his daughter was at school and learning to play the flute, she came home one day and remonstrated with him, telling him: 'Dad, you're not playing the flute properly.'

I just found your channel. As a fellow Tull fan, I did the proper thing by liking and subscribing. At this point - Not only was Ian less than 2 years in on teaching himself the flute, but he was also keeping up on all the other instruments he plays. It is awesome to watch the evolution of Tull's live performances over the years. Sadly there just isn't enough Tull footage out there.

I was lucky to see them live on their 1972 tour of Australia....... it is mind boggling to see the bands improvement from late 1971 into 1972 and beyond. Those later concerts were as tight and as musical as a symphony orchestra..... very different to the videos of their earlier gigs. lol

StandUp was my intro to JT, which I heard playing in a SunsetStrip (Hollyweird) "head shop" that also sold vinyl. I was 15 yrs young, stoned on LSD as usual at that time, and immediately entranced with THIS exact song; I bought the lp then&there, and wore it out on my cheap phonograph! JT was my fav band in the early to mid-60s, only moving on to other stuff after PassionPlay, which was also the third time I saw them in concert. Thanx for the memories!!!

My father was WWII Big Band era guy that played the Sax. He encouraged us to play an instrument and I took up the flute. Got classics training, etc. But as a teenager, it just wasn't very cool especially for a male. Then Jethro Tull hit the scene and suddenly it was OK to be a male flautist.

While Ian Anderson is playing the heck out of the harmonica the band is really rocking out in the background although you can barely hear them because of the poor sound. 1970 was an interesting year for music. Things were changing from the folky pop and blues rock of the 60's to more prog-rock. Think of Yes and Mahavishnu Orchestra. You can hear a blues rock influence on this performance but the fact that he was improvising his solos seems to me that maybe he had jazz influences. I'm thinking of Rashan Roland Kirk and others who were moving towards "free jazz". Ornette Colemand also comes to mind. I don't know if as a classical flautist you listen to any jazz flautists but it's really a rich vain of music when it comes to the flute.

Ian was in his black man phase. He got over it soon. The band didn't play very well yet but they soon got over that too.

This was not a very good recording of this song. I've heard other recordings of this concert and they were better than this. Or at least I think I have.

With all his showmanship and pizzaz I believe Ian lost his song, which has a simple and sincere melody and poignant lyrics. Likewise he rather abused his flute, making this beautifully delicate instrument sound harsh and clumsy. His harmonica playing was good and I don't know why he didn't continue with that instrument throughout the song and leave his flute in its case.

I can appreciate where you're coming from, however I think that having the opposing ideas of a sincere melody with a heavier flute outburst sums up the overall idea of happiness meets sadness, which is present in many Tull songs. I believe that all instruments can have many sounds and colours and it's thanks to musicians like IA who experimented with them that we have come to know this.
