Thanks for this video. I have several fx filters and have been doing it the hard way for years. I never thought to connect one tube and open the flood gates to fill it automatically. So much easier and safer.

Thanks for setting this video up. I'd just bought an FX4 a few months ago and the water was starting to show signs of murkiness, so I knew it was high time to clean it out. Great step-by-step for beginners.

Every month, I revert back to this video as a safety net. It’s helped me from making silly mistakes like dumping the “safe” water and emptying my tank🤦🏻. Anyways, thanks a lot for the tips!

I absolutely love your videos. And they have helped me so much with the fluval filters, I now have 6 tanks, 4 running fluval external filters, just got a fx4 for new main tank 5 weeks ago just away to do my first filter maintenance, it's so much better to actually watch someone do it just to make sure you have things right. The first few I had second hand so no instructions but watched your videos & learned it all. So I'd like to say a massive thank you 🙌🏼

i've left my FX6 about 3-4 months without cleaning before, was not a good time for me cleaning that out after, good advice on monthly cleans 👍
@rcslyman89295 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the amount of usage. My FX4 just got its first clean after purchase about 2.5 months ago, and I only did that because the water was starting to get murky. I'll probably wind up doing a rinse every couple months. But that tank only has three occupants (albeit large ones, 2 goldfish and a sucker), so the canister's holding up on its filtration nicely. I'll adjust that schedule again if I notice it getting murky sooner this next run.

Thank you SO much for this video! I got one of these a while ago for really cheap (only slightly used from someone on craigslist) and I know maintenance time is coming up. Was super intimidated as it's much bigger than any filter I've used before, but this video eased that stress and was very informative! Hope all is well with you!

good vid. I'm considering an fx4 for my next upgrade. i have to say though bruv, I'm an electrician and you really need to sort the plug socket out. if thats the only place to house your fx4, then consider swapping the standard socket for an IP rated one (an outdoor one with waterproof cover). if something goes wrong down there, it could be fatal, for you and the fish. I'm not having a moan bruv. just friendly advice.

With the visible biofilms (or dirt?) built up on your bio-media are you worried that your mech-filtration is not fine enough? I see you have a ton of bio (which is awesome), but I wonder about it getting clogged with detritus.

I was curious about that "junk" your referring to, that comes out of the filter after you turn it back on. Mine does that and throws what I supposed to be, un eating food back into my aquarium. Does your hosing trap food in it? Because its Not in the filter because I just cleaned it! It may be the cause of my Nitrate issue.
@rnic07 жыл бұрын
Paul S Mcgowan It' not uneaten food, it's just bio film( same as on your bio media, the tank glass, etc), nothing to worry about. It clears in a few minutes, and ALL filters do it unless you clean your hoses religiously(now thats too much work!)..
@DaleMeaney5 жыл бұрын
It's the muck in your hoses being dislodged. Your filter will suck it back up as it turns over the tank a few times. If it really bothers you though you can use a hose brush to clean out the inside of your hoses.
@trevormcmanis7 жыл бұрын
Just remember that the media has to sit in aquarium water after you rinse. Don't let it dry out! Keep it wet and return it back to filter in a timely manner....

Thank you for posting. How often do you replace sponge filter media, if ever? Have you considered using several containers of clean tank water? Seems like after that first sponge the water being used to clean was very dirty. Thoughts? Thanks.
@EverydayAquarist7 жыл бұрын
Every couple of years as sponge does degrade eventually. Tbh all I do now is take the sponge out and blast it with a hose to clean it. No issues so far with that method
@BenOchart7 жыл бұрын
Everyday Aquarist Some think the sponges contain BB, but obviously you've found that your bio media carries the load just fine. Your method is certainly something I'll consider since those sponges hold a ton of slime. Thanks.

Its really ok to rinse those first foam pad filters in tap water... You have enough ceramic media to preserve a large colony of BB... Plus all the BB in your hoses, tank wall, substrate, and decor... Do your fish a favor and give those pads a good rinse and get some finer filter pads to polish your water a little better also...
@EverydayAquarist5 жыл бұрын

I wouldn't use tap water to clean the bucket; just pour some of the dirty aquarium water into it, swirl it around and dump it. No need for it to be super clean. Also, you're killing off a ton of your beneficial bacteria by leaving your sponges and biomedia exposed to the air for so long. Probably it's not killing all your beneficial bacteria, but you're not doing them any favors either.
