What about using the newer Bio-FX media without the hole in the center. You’d get much more bacterial growth maybe. Would you use that instead if you were buying today?

Use aquarium water to rinse out sponges bro. U don't want bacteria killed by tap water.

Hi so if I fill out the middle sections with bio media, will that effect the clarity of the water. Wil the outter sponges be able to handle the waste . I have a 75G tank with 40 African cichlids . I have 2 FX6 on it

Why do you use 2 different pads on outside trays when water flows up through all of them to the top and then down through the center of the trays? Course media should be on the outside and the finer media on top center tray to keep the bio media clean in the middle center and bottom center trays.

They are not completely necessary to have. I'm only using one of the red baskets on the top tray. Have fine filter floss, a Dual-layer filter, and then the black bio-foam It comes with to top it off. The rest is filled with bio media.

I'm curious why you changed out your bio media? That houses so much beneficial bacteria and really never needs to be changed.

Good ideas, but you kill all your beneficial bacteria when you rinse it in tap water. Rinse that stuff in the water from the filter.

fx5/6 are rubbish theyre basically big sponge filters with good turnover rate and thats it they fit a tiny bit of bio and the flow of water is too fast to maximise it ,plus ceramic rings are a terrible choice as your main bio media

@@madisonmiller663 honestly after years of having fx's ,expensive eheims and all sorts im truly as happy with the allponds /sun sun range of filters .do the job perfectly ,cheap price and reliable ...what more could you want ....its not like im some newbie who dosent know better ive done this game a long time and had some big set ups ...in reality there is no difference ,overpriced filters are bullshit ...they are all plastic tubs that hold media that water passes through ....thats it ,none of them hold the secret key lol it took me a lot of years and a lot of money to realise it

Fluval have got it the wrong way round imo. They have about 6 times the foam to bio media ratio. Check out Aquael Ultramax and see how you have the option to have loads more biomedia than foam.

Well true but every surface can harbor nitrifying bacteria including sponges and filter floss. So it does not really matter. What matters is the efficiency of the filtering and flow rate.

Fluval just puts not enough biological media in the fx 6. When you set it up like this, with, for example sera siporax(who is the original en still the best), your biological surface will increase like nothing else.

Instead of this time taking method,you could use better media....biohome,seachem matrix,natural lava or even pot scrubbers are far better options
