Cheers, if it had fought a little harder then it would have been my favourite catch of the year. I would dearly love to get hold of a fish like that at night on a single hander.

Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Tbh I was asked to keep quiet about this water so I will remain tight lipped as I would like to go back! It wasn't TAS water though. PM me if you want any info on TAS beats though. They've got fishing all over.

Yes it's lovely water, Iwish I had more access to it. There is something magic about a real spate river.

@abakerslife yes, I fish the Erriff in Mayo, a spate river, so depend on getting a good flood then getting your timing and beats right critical. Salmon runs picked up during lockdown but now getting worse again. All the best next year.

Very good Rob, enjoyed watching that and following you on your day’s fishing 👍. Lovely sea trout as well, we rarely get them that size here in Ireland 👏🎣👍. If I could offer something to try next season by way of ‘reading the water’. Around 4.50 you were fishing a nice looking run and a fish showed downstream. From the vid most of the flow is down the far bank and so it’s likely a running fish like that one will be in the far half of the flow. You were doing a downstream mend which gives you a good wide arc of ‘swing’. To maximise your ‘effective fishing time/swing’ you could mix it up a bit and do some upstream mends. This will keep you fly in the taking zone for longer and so potentially increase your chances of a hook up. Hope this makes sense and as I say just something to think about in 24. Tight lines and keep the vids coming 😊🎣👍

Thanks for the pointers, I always find those runs hard to fish. I get your point though that an upstream mend would hold the fly on the far bank where the fish are likely to be. In my mind I use the downstream mend in that situation so the fly still swims in the still part of the pool but I guess that's less important as the fish aren't there (unless they follow the fly across the pool). There are a couple of very similar runs on my home river and next year I'm looking forward to trying an upstream presentation with a big nymph.
@AndrewMcGall
@AndrewMcGall 6 ай бұрын
@@abakerslife you can actually do both and I find it can be very effective 🤫.. I usually do an upstream mend immediately to hold the fly in the current/running line (in lower water fish often also hold there in the more oxygenated water), you often need to repeat this to continue to hold the fly in that zone.. then I do a downstream mend like you suggest to fish the softer inside water. The sudden change in direction causes fly to ‘dart’ out of the current and this can be very effective at ‘Inducing a take’.. as I say mum’s the word 🤫😄🎣.. tight lines!

Whats your take on best wading boots Rob? Felt / Studded Felt or Studded Rubber Tread as you seem to do plenty of walking up the banks etc .
@abakerslife
@abakerslife 5 ай бұрын
I have just used rubber so far with studs but they all seem to fall out pretty quickly even the expensive ones when they are glued in. I haven't tried felt as like you noticed most of my fishing involves a long walk. Do you have a preference?
@DaiHGowerWales
@DaiHGowerWales 4 ай бұрын
@@abakerslifei used to buy cheap sacrificial oversized walking boots off amazon over a stocking foot with 7 or 9 ( hard) studs ( if they last one season....) but I've just spent out on the Korkers Darkhorse interchangeable soles and Boa tightening system. With one set of ordinary rubber and one set with studs. ( plus a 3rd set with those Z plates ? for rock fishing the coast) Bit of a faff switching them over but at least the tightening / loosening bit is easier than hiking boots with laces. Felt doesn't feel solid on the foot for me too slippery on grass. I've never glued my studs so thanks for the tip.

You'd be just as well coming down the road to the north east I know of sea trout of 17lb 8, 18lb and several close to 20lb that came off two of my local rivers. It'd be a lot cheaper and a lot less windy!

@@abakerslife might be an option for next year. That's some size of seatrout those. I find some of the fresh seatrout fight harder than salmon.
