Btw for the alligator gar, I’ve had luck throwing flies with a ton of flash, sparkle clousers usually work pretty well, however, I’m pretty sure when they are rolling to the surface, they aren’t actually feeding, you have to wait until they aren’t rolling.

Thanks Bob! Yeah it was clear! Actually this and the medina are super clear. Really most of the creeks around here have been pretty clear for what I expected. I think there are times of year for them to muck up, but The ones I’ve fished have been clear. It’s not a bad place around here. Still wish I was back in Colorado at times but, I’m making the best I can. :). Haha

You have some nice streams in your neck of the woods. I live closer to Stillwater fisheries they contain some nice trout and carp. The trout near me are fussy and difficult to catch, but on the right day they can be undone. Good luck with the fly development.

Seems like a nice place. I know Australia is large though so I’m not sure how close you are to him. But I do see he gets to fish some rivers as well. I’ll have to ask him where for ya.

Nice to see you got out man! Looked like a lot of fun. Those gar will bite minnow-type lures. I've never caught one on fly yet but I have caught them on flashy minnow-like artificial baits. Of course, most of the one's I've caught have been on natural bait.

For longnose gar, try tying a few e.p. flies with a long tail. This will snag in the jaw of the fish since it is hard to hook them.

Enjoyed the video. It was difficult to see the fish in detail but I believe the 2nd one was a redbreast. They have the really long ear flap. The bass was either a spotted bass or guadalupe bass. The gar was likely a long nose. Try a red and white streamer, trip it past their nose horizontally and if they turn and follow then stop the strip. Rios take all the same flies that other sunfish take. They can be picky at times and difficult to catch on beds but not impossible. I find a crawfish colored fly works best on Rios. I tie what I call a crawfish briminator. You should try fishing a popper dropper setup for sunfish. I tie a size 8 llano bug with a crawfish briminator dropper. I've fished Brushy many times. It's an incredible fishery with lots of trophy fish. Thanks for sharing

Rios are a super fun fish to target, flies with short trails that are on a Jigged hook work the best. Most of the time I tie my flies in 12, 14, and 16 with some bead chain or small led eyes. Tenkara is a debate but lots of the locals consider it to be the most productive way of catching them even though you still can catch them on traditional fly rod and reel. They are a super fun fish to catch because of their bad attitude and look really cool too!

Oh man, nymphing always worked best for me there. Pheasant tails, prince nymphs, copper johns, rainbow warriors, some type of midge pupae, Frenchi’s, etc... I went for the 16-22 range for most of the flies there. Had decent luck with small streamers also

what kind of weight rod do you use? im torn because I love to throw big poppers for bass but also don't want to lose the fight either. ive kind of compromised on a 6 so I can also go for carp, still got my 5 too
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
That all should work, I was using a light I think 3wt here. But if your throwing big poppers definitely 5-6wt at least. I generally judge the rod weight by the flies im casting not really the size of the fish.

Great video as usual man. I’ve been meaning to head up that way but the Covid stuff has everything messed up. I will say the fishing is slower this year for some reason. I believe the weather has something to do with it but the biggest one is the pressure. I see a lot more people on the water this year. They creek that I go to often is super crowded and I know a lot of people are fishing without a license and over harvesting fish. I see more trash and just disrespect for the environment. Hope to see you on the water sometime.

Yeah man it’s sad. Lots of people with more free time. But not with the respect that comes along with fishing for a long time and knowing what disrespecting the river can do to it. (Or maybe lack of care for it). Glad you liked the video.
