FLY FISHING FENNIMORE FORK (CASTLE ROCK CREEK) WISCONSIN DRIFTLESS REGION TROUT FISHING

This night was perfect. The warm spring air was carried the echoes of the spring peepers through the hills and into my ears. The red wing black birds were frantically prepping for warmer times to come and occasionally flirting with a mate. A rather wet forecast had left most of the Driftless region in a chocolate milk mess that would be difficult to fish. I am not sure why I go, sometimes I feel like I am pulled by an invisible rope. The want and need to get out on the water is so strong and only gets worse as the days get warmer. This evening session was about as much fun as anyone can possibly have when fishing the Driftless Region. I was able to catch a few amazing fish on both the nymph and the streamer. On top of that, I think I might have caught a wild Driftless rainbow trout. I have never seen a fish this beautiful and if I were out West I would have sworn it was a cutthroat. Spring is here folks, let that rope pull you to the stream.

Good stuff Mike. That first rainbow was a beauty. They have to be stockers. There are a couple rivers in central Wisconsin with reproducing bows, but certainly not down south.

Rainbow trout are trout are stocked in Wisconsin waters by the Wisconsin DNR. As far as I know there are no naturally reproducing rainbows in the Driftless. Those looked like wild fish. If you go to the Wisconsin DNR website they give the contact information for the local biologists. Contact them they would know.

Almost 3 years late to the party here but I fish this stream often including this particular stretch! I caught a rainbow downstream from this spot back in 2020 (though it was definitely not as beautiful/wild looking as yours) which made me curious as well... DNR fishery management reports show they stocked this stream with rainbows annually from 1972-2019!

It may be a cutthroat hybrid. The collection of dots towards the tail are common to some cutthroats.

@@CurtRees it doesn’t matter, because it adds up. Only you can say that because you haven’t been to any of these places. I’m tired of spots being blown up, a lot of these trout streams can’t support the overwhelming numbers of new fly anglers today.

@@jacoblaw23 I actually have been to about 80% of the IA and WI places he shows in his videos. I have fished them before his vids because they are commonly fished locales because of public easements. My thought is that those who fish the resource will take care of it. The more responsible anglers, the better.

@@CurtRees doesn’t matter, I’ve guided a few of the rivers in his vids. He’s spot burning and that’s that. You even acknowledged it, and the fact that you’re supporting him blows my mind. I don’t think you understand, our situation out west is much different, especially in New Mexico
