Hey Alvin, ROOKIE angler here. I was wondering why the laughter at the strike indicator nymph fishing rig. Is it this style of rig outdated? Has it been replaced by Euro nymph rig or what is it? Just trying to get a grasp on all this fly fishing knowledge. Thanks man I love your vids

@@DonJulio213 When I was a trout guide in Colorado the indicator rig was my last choice. Only if nothing else worked. I know it's the go to rig for a lot of people and sometimes it is the only way to catch fish, but I think it has become a crutch especially for a lot of guides. If you have beginners you can put on an indicator and they can catch fish, but at the end of the day they don't really know much more about fly fishing than they did at the beginning of the day.

I live in western Washington State in the Great Pacific North West. We have some decent largemouth and Small mouth fisheries up here. Frankly, until recently, I have largely ignored them.... As our summer weather continues to get warmer every year I have found myself shutting down stillwater trout fishing earlier and earlier. Last summer I targeted Bass on the fly for the first time... with zero success. I am very thankful that I found your channel! I am looking forward to putting your tips to work as I am sure they will improve my efforts. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

As an age 77 senior, I wade fish for trout, but want to step up to a 7 or 8 weight fly rod system for bass. I do not own a boat, so shore and wade fishing will be my presentation method. Having fly fished for decades, I am wondering if on of my 9 foot bamboo three piece rods would work for bass. These rods are generally 3-piece 7 weights, cast well, and have good reserve power. The down side can be that the guides may be small to accommodate today's fly lines. The classic bamboo rods were designed for silk fly lines which are smaller in diameter, so I may have to remove the original guides and whip finish larger stripper, snake, and tip guides on one of these rods. The bamboo rods are heavier than the graphite fly rods these days, so a full day of casting requires some conditioning which I am up for. I will also get a 9 - 10 foot bass 4 piece bass fly rod in case the cane proves too much to handle. What weight and length graphite bass fly rod may I consider for large mouth bass in lakes and small mouth bass in smaller rivers, keeping in mind that I wade using breathable chest waders? I tie my own flies and make leader systems. Ron, NE Iowa.

@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing You might like this. I hate itty bitty flies of any kind. I don't mind that I can't see them on the water. That goes with the territory. But I do mind tiny hooks and gossamer-thin tippets. A few years ago I said the hell with it, got a bunch of size 18 blue wing olive wet flies, and tied a piece of 5x to the hook of a Stimulator. Stimmie stops or disappears, fish has taken the BWO. But the Stimmie eventually gets soaked. So I started using a small panfish popper, white or orange. The kind you get in a pack of 12 at a big box store. I get some funny looks from the die-hard trout guys -- who are still trying to tie on their size 48 BWO on 17X tippet.

Thank you Alvin for this informative and well presented series! Question about using your popper fly when blind casting - is there any benefit to attaching a small unweighted streamer a couple of feet behind the dry, similar to a a dry dropper rig for trout? Seems like it might increase the odds of inducing a strike but maybe not worth the chance of getting a tangle?

I'll be the odd man out and say that a 5wt rod can work for bass fishing. I use my 5wt on rivers while wading to fish for bass, usually with a sink tip line and streamers but if I get onto any calmer water I have a floating line and poppers to use. The only thing is (and you mentioned this) is that I can't really throw any super large flies. But I've still caught some decent sized bass on a 5wt, the fight is super fun too. Might look into a 7wt rod tho, would be nice to try and target some bigger fish that I might be missing out on.

Hey Alvin.....Great Video. A quick question...at the end you showed your set up, and then talked about the line you have on specifically your leader. Do you have your tapered leader, then tippet then your fly you showed, or are you just tying that fly to the end of your tapered leader. I am not 100% clear on the leader tippet process.. Thanks and great video.
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing

What's your opinion on fiberglass rods for bass fishing? I got a great deal on a 7/8 fiberglass rod, but I'm finding the 7ft 6in length a bit limiting for casting bigger flies and getting much distance. Now I'm thinking I should have gone with a 9ft graphite. Enjoyed your video. Thanks, Jeremy

When timing your leaders what lengths do you use?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing Жыл бұрын
For floating lines, 6 to 9 foot. For sinking lines 3 to 5 foot.

@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing yeah I fly but alot or rivers . I want to get into flying for bass and larger fish like northerns here in Colorado. I euro also so i was wondering if you tie your leaders like euro. Bigger backing like 8ft 20lb then 15lb to 10lb.

Does everything you’re saying about leaders and tipper and tying your own stay the same if it’s a 5 wt rod or how is it different maybe is a better question? I’m still mostly catching panfish and some bass but it’s the setup I have right now.

What rod holder is that inside your vehicle at the 2:52 mark?

Sorry for the delay, it's an ancient version of the rod loft.

Hey man, can you clarify your leader setup? Are you attaching tippet material to Tippet material? So 40lbs tied to 30lbs tied to 20lbs? Love the videos, keep them coming!
@rudyruiz9521
@rudyruiz9521 4 жыл бұрын
Not asking me, but I figured I'd help out. Yes. You can use any monofilament line. The tippet is simply the last part of the leader. But tippet material can be used as the leader itself. He goes a little heavier than I do, but that's personal preference. I use 30#mono to 20#, then 15#, then depending on fly size usually 0x or 1x tippet.

If you were mostly catching 10-12" bass in a river (Brazos, Colorado, etc.), would you take a 6wt too or just do everything with an 8wt? My thoughts are the fish would be more fun on the 6wt but the 8wt makes it easier to cast something like a size 6 popper for distance. Just curious what you think.
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I always take the 6 weight. I'll throw a big popper on the 8 weight some days even though I know I will catch less fish for the chance at a few big ones. Just depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
