Sorry to throw cold water on this -- but not wetting your hands and keeping the trout out of the water leads to near certain mortality for these fish. Might as well have eaten them - they didn't live through the week.

I recently saw the thumbnail of this video in a Facebook post (Ca Trout Fishing) encouraging people to go out onto the tule and try catching some trout, but not a word was mentioned about the importance of catching and releasing these fish. I think everyone should experience a fish on the fly but the native trout population in the tule is not sustainable enough for consumption. I’m writing this because it is already a major issue in this area and the more publicity it gets without the proper education of the resource, the worse and worse it gets. I’ve been tossing a fly into this river since I could walk and have always cherished what it has to offer. The amount of trash and stringers full of fish I’ve seen come off this river in the last few years is heartbreaking and only seems to be getting worse. I applaud you for catching and releasing in your video but if you’re going to promote these rivers with the amount of information that was in the initial post, there needs to be some light shed on the importance of preserving the natural resources of the river.

You are very right!!! As a hunter, fisherman, and conservationist I couldn’t agree more. It makes me mad seeing people take more than their bag limit out and these fish are soo small they are better to catch and see the beauty than to take on a stringer. It breaks my heart seeing the banks lined with beer bottle, diapers, food packaging...ext!!! I am glad that you posted this comment, I feel the same way! I will try to bring that up in future videos about keeping the shores clean and what you pack in you better pack out. I will definitely talk about how it should be catch and release for these fish as well. Thank you again for bringing this up!
