Making the leader loop connector to the end of your fly line allows you to replace your old leader with a new one quickly. Here we show you how to tie "The Perfection Loop". If your fly line does not have a loop connection on the end this is a easy way to tie one on. To tie the Nail Knot on the end of the fly line watch the video, " Nail Knot, tied with a Nail.

I've caught the fishing bug again after putting the gear away almost 25 years ago. The old Sears light weight fiberglass 8 1/2 rod and reel (late 60's era from when I was a paperboy) has the same old line on it. I used some of the old Cortland 333 to rejuvenate the fly line, made a leader loop like you described in the video and a couple of tippets from some 4# mono. I then took to the canals here in the Miami area. While the fish weren't interested in those old poppers from long ago, I did get back into the casting groove rather quickly. Many thanks for the leader loop tip. That will make changing out tippets much easier, and I expect I'll be changing out quite a few of them. All the best....

Hey Dawson, having a loop at the end of your fly line a lows for quick change of your leader. A perfection loop tied to the end of the fly line is to bulky to go thru the rod guides. You want a streamlined connection here for that reason, allowing the leader connection at the line end to smoothly go thru the guides when landing a fish or going out when he runs. Using the nail knot on the fly line end, and a perfection loop makes a nice streamline connection. Hope this helps.

As a Cape Cod saltwater fly guy, I have to get rid of the factory loops on fly line ends or else the razor toothed bluefish do it for me. They actually bite at the loop thinking it is a small baitfish, so I have t do the nail knot to mono loop….

Good morning! I've been a fan of these videos for years. Your instructions are well thought out and presented. The size and color contrast of the example materials makes following along very easy. One question: Would you consider re-shooting/re-uploading them in greater clarity as these can be a bit grainy?

Mike, very instructive video Thanks. A "newby to fly fishing" question though: why don't you just put a perfection loop in the end of your fly line instead?
@michaelbantam
@michaelbantam 9 жыл бұрын
Patrick LamersHi Partick, good question. A couple reasons I would not tie the perfection loop in the fly line. The knot would be very bulky. When we use long 12 foot leaders I want to strip my leader into the guides of the fly rod so I can net my catch. Also this could catch a lot of moss. Here is what I would suggest when making a leader loop at the end of your fly line. Thanks for your question. www.dreamcastidaho.com/video/2013/07/27/fly-fishing-knots-nail-knot-tied-with-nail-and-perfection-loop/

Hello, instead of loop in loop (flyline and leader) you can also tie the leader to the loop of the flyline with an improved clinch knot or something like that or is that not good?? Thx for info!!!

This is only made for fly fishing line as mono; as you pull tag end it does not synch.

Great video but a quick question! I hope this wasn't explained and I just brain farted haha! Why do you cut the welded loop off the fly line and add this connector leader with basically the same thing (a loop)? Assuming the next connection will be loop to loop to your leader, why not skip that connector and just use the welded loop instead?? Cheers. Sorry if that answer is obvious. New to fly fishing.
@michaelbantam
@michaelbantam 7 жыл бұрын
Hi SeemsLikeSomething, good questions, hear is my reasoning. The welded loop is a good connection and the manufacture have designed this into their fly lines. The problem is when the leader begins to cut thru the outer coating of the fly lines loop. This may take time but it will eventually happen. If you are not aware of this water will begin to wick into the core of the fly line and it will begin to sink the tip. Another reason I like cutting off the welded loop is to make a smoother transition of the connection through the guides on the fly rod when stripping a long leader, 12 foot, 15 foot, into them as you net your fish. Sometime when a fish sees your net he/she, will take a big run and I have lost many fish as the leader loop can hang up on the fly rods guides as it is pulled thru them. Even with the nail knot connection you will notice the fly line will eventually crack behind the knot. When ever I put a new leader on I always check this connection for the above reasons. Knowing how to tie a nail knot, and perfection loop will let you fix this on the trip if you need to. Hope this answers your question.
@SeemsLikeSomething
@SeemsLikeSomething 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Bantam Thanks for your reply! So, the nail knot connection from fly line to mono avoids this cut-and-wick issue? Perhaps I can use the welded loop until it gets beat up, then clip that off and make the nail knot to connector loop later on? Cheers!
@SeemsLikeSomething
@SeemsLikeSomething 7 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry ok I missed that second thing. So, eventually both connections will wear down eh? I guess a mono to mono loop runs through guides much nicer than fly line to mono loop. Ok this gives me some things to think about thanks!!

Hey Micheal, I've been doing a similar thing my entire life, but instead of leader, 30Lbs line backing so it can be used as a sighter. I haven't seen anybody doing this myself except in a euro nymphing rig hybrid. What are your thoughts? Can you think of any drawbacks?
@michaelbantam
@michaelbantam 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephen, using the butt section of a leader is one material to us in a emergency situation, like when your on the river and need to replace the loop section of the fly line on the spot. Like you I have been using a material called AMNESIA. You can get it at some fly shops. It is a visible RED color, that makes it easy to see as an indicator. Some of my friends don't like using indicators, more of a challenge thing than efficient way of fishing, and this material gives me the edge, of coarse they all use it now. ha. Thanks for the insight.

Hey. Thanks for the video. But doesnt the loop to loop connetion make the "turn over momentum" suffer?
@michaelbantam
@michaelbantam 8 жыл бұрын
+Xittin Anas I have never experienced this to be an issue. I have not mentioned the material I use for this connection. I like the Amnesia tippet. It is red which can serve as a strike indicator if you don't want to use the normal type. The size or poundage of the material is dependent on the line weight. If I use this connection on a 2, 3 weight fly line I use 15 lbs. If it is 4,5,6, weights I use 25 lbs. 8,9, weights will use 30 lbs. I think turn over momentum is derived by the amount of power applied to the cast. If you are casting big flies, or bulky flies like mouse patterns I use shorter leaders so they will rollover, longer leaders for small dry flies where I don't want the leader to turn over, allowing for longer drifts. Some have asked about this connection "hinging" or kinking at this section and this might occur if the material making the connection is to light. Hope this answers your question which is a very good one.

@Samwellum
@Samwellum 7 жыл бұрын
I'm new to this. why is there nine feet of leader??
@michaelbantam
@michaelbantam 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, there are many reasons for the leader length. Think of the leader as the presentation of your fly. Long leaders a commonly used for fishing dry flies because you want your fly to be as far away from your fly line as possible. To long and it will be difficult to cast. You want your leader to be able to drift your fly to rising fish, to short and you might spook the fish. If you are fishing up stream to rising fish you want your leader to roll out straight, to fish down stream you want your dry fly to float to the fish so you need to have some slack in the leader. Cross current you want your fly to drift as far as possible before the moving water pulls your fly under. Hope this helps get you started dry fly fishing.

@michaelbantam
@michaelbantam 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcus, I want to say this the right way…. your comment is attached with the "Perfection Loop" video. If the perfection loop is tied correctly it will not slip when pulled on. If you are referring to the "Nail Knot" at the end of the fly line… it will slip if you pull on it hard enough. If your catching fish big enough to have this happen I would suggest using a different knot. As of now I have never had this knot slip on 20, plus pound steelhead. Make sure when your tying this knot that all your wraps are level across the knot by rolling it between your fingers as you are fighting it. You want to make it as flat as possible. Thanks for you recommend. Let me know how it goes.
