My second shot at fly fishing with a spinning rod and this time I try bombarda float fly fishing. When using the fly on spinning rod, I tried both nymphs and a dry fly. I ran into some serious problems using the bombarda float with the way I rigged it. My Cadence Fishing rod and reel performed exceptionally well despite the bombarda float. Hey... if I am doing this wrong, please educate me in the comments! Thanks.

If you are spin fishing, I would stick to Panther Martins or go to a local tackle shop and ask. If fly fishing, check in with a fly shop and buy a few of the right flies in exchange for the advice.

It seems your conclusion is correct- just use a fly rod. It packs down smaller than a spinning rod & reel and will work in fast and slow water. Would be interesting to see if turning the float around would work since I bet there are more folks who have small spinning rods than 2-, 3-, or 4-wt. fly rods.

Hey Steve...I have an idea that may work. Use a small clear plastic bead for a weight and tie it on as a drop shot weight. That should allow the distance you need. Also, I throw weightless live crickets (nature's fly 😆) quite easily around 5-10 yards with an 8' slow/moderate action ultralight rod. Fiberglass rods work great for light casting because they have more of a slingshot effect. Just some ideas for you to kick around!

Super idea! My next shot in the mountains will be in October unless I visit my sister who lives on the White River this summer.

Hey, at least you gave it a good try. I'm still spin casting for trout and there are times when they just won't hit a spinner and are very finicky. I will be hitting a DH stream in a few weeks and will take some clear casting floats and dry flies and try my luck. Side note: I did try a Tenkara rod last fall but it completely frustrated me, kept getting snagged overhead and everywhere else. After about 6 snags and breakoffs, I went back to spincasting. Thanks for the great videos!

Sorry the Tenkara did not work out. I use a short tenkara rod and try and keep my casts low and over the stream. No issue with spin - you need more than one tool in the box!

Hi Flyspinn fishing with bombarda is a very common way of fishing with flies in Denmark and most of the other northern countries in Europe. For instance the late a relatively new INNO Bombarda that is sold under the slogan “No tangle - Just Fish”, which I have to admit works. There is no water in a Bombarda since the weight is defined in the type of bombarda float you use. You can get it as Floating, Slow Intermediate, Intermediate and sinking, depending on at how you want to fish. You can also variate the weight of the type you use for instance if you prefer a floating is goes in three different weight classes. You tie a fly tippet to the bombarda stick with a length, depending on where you are fishing (6-10 feet’s). On your mainline you can use a cross lock to connect to the bombarda float - I have used it in streams, rivers, lakes and on the see for trout, salmon, basically all types of fish that you would use flies to catch. You can with great benefit use it in places where the traditionally fly-fishing is complicated or just because you want to Fly-Spinn-Fish! Knæk & Bræk

Yes, Martin is sending me the INNO to try out. Can't wait to see it.

Had always used a casting bubble if I only had spinning, or even spincast, gear available. Yes, SPLASH. Had seen that Bombarda and wondered...but now I’m thinking my smallest Waggler float will be better. Thanks for the heads up!

You should try an inexpensive Tenkara rod - great for small streams

Not the best place for a bombarda. They're more popular here in Europe and I use them for pike and sea bass flies here in Ireland. Make your leader in two parts; a heavier and stiffer gauge line attached to the bombarda and then your line of choice connecting your fly/lure to the first heavier line. The stiffness of the heavier line drastically reduces the leader reversing and becoming entangled. That river is ideal for a light 6 foot fly rod. You should also try "dapping" there. Great fun and more precise than conventional fly fishing. Beautiful little spot you have there though.

Thank you very much for that guidance! My prefered method of fishing on streams and rivers is with my fly rod or a Tenkara rod. So much fun!

In a little creek like that, frustration. Float and fly on streams half again as big or bigger. 1 inch clear bobber either the slip kind above a swivel or bobber stop or a clicp on bobber. both about half full of water above about 6 ft leader. If you half to use a spinning or spin casting rod and reel.

I searched for this float before you started explaining your issues in the video. I have a couple thoughts: Firstly, I wonder if a 'bubble float' would be more advantageous. I've seen a good few recommendations for them, and I've been considering one to use flies for bluegill with my UL setup. Secondly, you may be right about the long stem causing issues. I've seen some results with the search for Bombarda floats which are identical, save not having the long stem. Oh, and at least one option is fluorescent green, which might help not need a strike indicator as well.

I really believe the bubble float would have worked much better. Best to stick with what you know. I have had a few bubbles for years.... just have to try new stuff...

@@KayakhacksFishing Thanks for the tip. I've never used one, so that helps the decision.

They're not used as bite indicators and only as a casting aid. Bubble floats are far inferior to a bombarda. The stem is used for aerodynamic purposes on casting and also for the action of retrieving. Like anything, they have their uses and limitations. That's why I design my own, painted with a fish design and with it's own hook. Because sea bass will very regularly actually attack the bombarda float. But ordinary bubble floats can be very handy in a pinch.

You got the float on backwards, the tube needs to be on the fly side, and will cut down on the tangling.. these type of floats are, among other techniques, used to catch searun browntrout while wade fishing in Denmark. I have never seen or heard of anybody using them in streams here, more used for the ekstra range for the fly or soft plastics in open water. knæk og bræk

Thanks! I appreciate that! It clearly was not working in small water! I rigged it as shown here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mamXf6aCe9Vrfas I'll try reversing it next time.

The tube is actually to assist in accuracy so it belongs on the side opposite the fly. You run the main line through the tube and float, add a bead to protect your knot connecting the line to the swivel, then the leader is attached to the swivel and finally the fly. There is a brand of Bombarda float made in Denmark with tubes at both ends with the intent as Mr. Christensen asserts of preventing tangles. I have used German made ones in the lowland lakes of Washington state without experiencing tangles, which may be a product of my using shorter leaders and putting my finger on the line to stop forward movement of the float and fly before it touches the water. I would use a tough bubble without the tube and a short rod if I was to attempt using such a rig in a small stream. I agree that this is best for long casts in big water such as large rivers, lakes, and the ocean. I am going to use mine in Puget Sound this winter for Sea Run Cutthroat Trout.

I’ve never had much success trout fishing with spin cast rigs unless I was using a spinner bait like a Mepps. More fun with fly rod. Enjoy the mountains! I just relocated with my wife to Pensacola Florida so I’ll be doing mostly saltwater fishing in bats and just off shore
