2024-06-09 - this little peak has actually been on my 'to-do' list for some time. It is a named peak in the area and for that reason alone should go on any list. But I also read Bob Spirko's blog on the trip and it seemed like a good trek especially as there was still a lot of late season snow lingering on the peaks that I usually try and get to by June.
The trailhead is easy to find as it is on the Kananaskis Rd./Highway #40/Forestry Trunk Road right below a monument dedicated to the First Nations people in the area and the travels Peter Fiddler, an early explorer.
Once on the trailhead I followed Bob Spirko's GPS track. This was helpful as there are a lot of OHV trails and it would be easy to lose the way just by following the obvious road. Once I left the trail it was easy enough to find the various steep hills that lead to the summit.
There are 4 main hills on the trek which I named "Aphid Point", "Pillbug Peak", "Midge Ridge" and finally Fly Hill. There is elevation loss and gain between each hill and this makes for actually quite strenuous hiking especially on the return trip.
From the summit there are good views. Some of the peaks along the divide are obscured by trees or higher hills but the view of the Livingstone Range is good.
Despite this I had a great trip and had a very enjoyable day in the hills.
