While I think dubbing loops have many uses, I have always created CDC collars by simply tying the feather in by the tip, folding the hackle back and winding on the hook. Faster, easier and less bulk on the fly. I use the Stonfo hackle pliers with the small spring to avoid breaking the hackle while winding.
